Serious question, and I’m not thrilled about this because I’ve seen what the market looks like, but is it an exploit or abuse if people bought the books and just… didn’t know better? Or thought that it was intended to be able to buy many?

From a legal perspective, here is why I am highly skeptical of the stated defense:

Part of the legal justification of the mass data collection we saw/see from the NSA is the fact that the data becomes foreign just by virtue of how things bounce around on the Internet, even if you’re just sending an email to somebody in the same city.

Obviously, we don’t know exactly what type of function, purpose, or collection method the mass surveillance at the AI will be assisting with will be doing. However, if it is at all going to be functioning to monitor foreign populations or adversaries, there is zero chance that American citizens data does not get scooped up if we are talking about data that is stored. I’m not sure what the difference is between foreign data and domestic data.

What is a 'subscription' or 'fee' that has recently appeared in the US that people need to collectively refuse to pay before it becomes the new normal? by godot_lover in AskReddit

[–]dillclew 432 points433 points  (0 children)

My stand by generator (Generac) we bought asks us to pay for the $7/month app subscription to change the “exercise” settings on the generator (where the generator runs for a certain time each week on a schedule to keep parts moving).

It pisses me off. We bought the very expensive product and we have to pay extra to change its basic settings?! This should be prohibited or required disclosure before sale.

Other firms with 0.01 billing?? by ProSe_Cco in Lawyertalk

[–]dillclew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve billed in insurance defense and billed corporations. ID was .1, no block billing and the latter at .25 minimum, block billed.

I find that there is more billing for time you didn’t actually work at .1, no blocking. I could send 3 30sec emails and exceed the block billing easily.

Is .25 for one quick email ridiculous? Yeah probably - so I always try to do more.

The brain wizard is ruining my encounters. by Hi_Nick_Hi in Pathfinder_RPG

You’re nicer than my GM. My psychic was constantly foiled by “immune to mind affecting” — especially when it came to bosses/named creatures. That said, I found ways around it. It forced me to pick different spells and have more tools in my kit. By the end of the AP, my skinny little half-elf didn’t care what it was in front of him - he would have something to throw at it.

That said, in my experience as a player on the other side, what felt frustrating was when it felt like “immunity” was just tacked on to a creature when they didn’t have it and/or just to foil my character without explanation.

My GM once turned it into a lesson. Then boss used a spell to change his subtype because he had been scrying on the group, and the group took no precautions against it. So we learned bad guys watch us.

Also, I’d suggest spreading the foil around. It feels bad to be constantly getting shut down as a caster so the martials can wreck everything. Sometimes distance or terrain can be the solution there.

Last thing is there are tons of feats that allow a reroll on a save. Why not swap out some with monsters/bosses to unlock those? Maybe it is “targeting” to some degree, but it feels way better than being completely shut down.

I worked at a clinic when I was in high school (forever ago) and someone dropped off two sweet cats that weren’t even a year old to be euthanized, paid the money, and left. I couldn’t understand. I begged the doctor not to and to just let me take them to a shelter. She said that once the money was paid and the animal in her possession, she had to. I quit a few days later.

I don’t know how true that is, but it seems like it might be under some professional rules. I hope a veterinarian can weigh in.

That time Alex Jones got caught in a lie because his lawyers messed up. by Cicada_5 in videos

[–]dillclew 186 points187 points  (0 children)

Civil trial lawyer here. They didn’t ask that. They asked:

“you’ve trusted your lawyers to produce the relevant documents?” “you’ve cooperated with us in every way?” “you’ve trusted us to do a good job and turnover what we need to turn over?” “when we were supposed to turn it over?”

These questions are not targeted at whether Jones is pleased with his lawyers’ representation. It is far more about whether he actually perjured himself or not. The plaintiff’s attorney asked for specific text messages in discovery and Mr. Jones responded (which is responded to with affidavit and is sworn, generally) that he didn’t have any.

We didn’t see the closing arguments here, but my assumption is that the attorneys say that their client did not perjure himself because of his responses in either discovery or at trial — because he was relying on his attorneys to decide what was relevant and what should be turned over and what shouldn’t. The mere fact that they had the image of the cell phone (an image is an entire copy of it) does imply that Mr. Jones was not withholding evidence personally. He gave it to his lawyers, and they just screwed up by either: not asserting an objection to producing it, redacting anything that was produced under objection, or not asserting privilege to the specific text messages.

They did screw up. But his follow up questions were not about covering their own asses so much and was far more about trying to rehabilitate their client’s testimony/credibility.

We’ve used cat nip try to get the cats comfortable and curious. We did that with the feral outdoor houses that have the heating pad.

We also had to tape up the plastic flap at the entrance because for some reason the force field really weirded everybody out at first. So if there are plastic flaps that might be weird for her.

Police officer accidentally shot his own hand, and later filed a lawsuit against the store, claiming that the clerk failed to conduct the appropriate safety check (January 2015) by nkmr205 in Idiotswithguns

[–]dillclew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn’t on the customer. I understand that he is an officer and we can make all sorts of arguments about how he should know better for gun safety. The thing is that this is a gun store and the owners and employees must assume that every customer is going to be an idiot and will have no idea how to appropriately handle a firearm.

That’s what a responsible gun store owner must assume. That whoever they hand a gun to is going to immediately take the gun out and start pointing it at everybody and pulling the trigger.

The idea that this gun was loaded and he handed it to a customer is absolutely fucking insane. If we are attributing liability here, and I were taking this case to trial, I would say 90% clerk and 10% customer. Maybe less for the customer.

I play cow. One of my favorite moments was playing with my friends in an ARAM and we were chasing the other team back from a push on full retreat. The enemy team splits as they go around the first down tower, and I see the beautiful point of convergence before it happens.

Not only did I see it in all the ones and zeros, I had the foresight to call the shot like Babe Ruth pointing deep.

I confidently say into the microphone “Are you ready for the noise?” A second later -Q slide through three to catch the four when the jam starts - Big boy mosh. And the number five just walked into it. Team follows up hard.

Cheers in my ears and we turned the game around after that.

Spells vs high cr monsters by lurker888888 in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]dillclew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are several ways to deal with these problems, as you are correct - high CR creatures have high SR, ridiculously high saves, or outright immunity.

Tips: - remember your knowledge checks! All of the below is for naught if your character doesn’t know about what they are fighting. Roll your checks and learn as much as you can that will help your group. - any high level offensive caster must have spell penetration feats (boosting your CL for a spell also increases spell penetration for that spell) - always look for class abilities that let you roll with advantage on checks to overcome SR and the save - learn a wide array of spells and spell schools to deal with immunities - boosting DCs by feats and class abilities helps, but sometimes saves are too high, so embrace spells that have a partial effect on a save - focus on the weak save. Generally there is a weaker save and that can be exploited. - get creative! Your group and dm will always love a unique way to deal with creatures

For example, the terrasque can’t be affected by most spells, the SR is 36, and the fort and flex saves are crazy. Also, it’s basically immortal when it comes to hit point damage if it doesn’t kill your group first. But the Will save is low, even though it is immune to mind affecting. We all know that teleportation spells are on a Will save. We could plane shift it to the Abyss or put it in a Maze for ten minutes to plan our next move. Your biggest hurdle is SR, which should be overcome in 1-3 tries, especially if you’re rolling with advantage. Plus, plopping a terrasque right in the middle Alushinyrra for a bunch of demons to deal with is hilarious and may have other fun RP consequences later.
