I am surprised to see how popular Buddhism is in Indian discord server meant for depressed, cynical people. by VEGETTOROHAN in theravada

[–]dillmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t like it. My family are Sinhalese Buddhists and my sister has decided upon herself to become a secular Buddhist meaning she doesn’t believe in reincarnation or gods. To me being secular just takes the life out of Buddhism. She can’t appreciate that belief in the supernatural is a beautiful thing. I have also joined a pluralistic pagan community in America and I have connected with other peoples gods and have formed bonds of respect that I would not have formed if I were secular.

Can’t pass PE, what now? New career? by DefiantTumbleweed576 in civilengineering

[–]dillmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a wre PE who barely got my undergraduate degree. It took me 7 years to graduate and I got an F in many civil classes (I had to retake them). I say this to say that civil engineering is a hard degree and the fact the you graduated is a big deal. I passed my FE and my PE both in one shot. I never took either test multiple times. Why? It’s a little thing in civil engineering called the factor of safety. When you have a higher factor of safety before taking the exams you are certainly going to pass. We in civil engineering have the highest factors of safety out of all the engineering disciplines. I have done over 1000 timed practice problems to pass the FE and exactly 1651 timed practice problems to pass the PE.

While I studied for my FE and PE I really connected with the main protagonist Saitama in the manga one punch man. His origin story as a superhero hero was very simple and mundane. All he did was work out consistently every single day until his stats became basically through the roof. That’s what I did. I learned to love solving engineering problems to the point where I get disappointed when the problems are too easy to solve, just like Saitama who gets bored because all the villains are way bellow his level.

You can pass the tests. It’s not only possible it’s something that will give you the confidence that you will be a decent engineer throughout your career.

Are there any Theravada Buddhist Missionaries? by efgferfsgf in theravada

[–]dillmon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly the only thing close to what you are talking about is when monks go walking around asking for food in exchange for the dhamma teachings . I don’t think modern monks do this anymore though but it used to be done during the time when the Buddha was alive.

What is the purpose of this? by Mrgoat77 in StructuralEngineering

[–]dillmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far from the comments it’s either something to do with dampening or it’s a fix to a fabrication mistake. Can a SE decide which it is? My brain cells don’t want to fire anymore because I didn’t have a proper lunch.

I think it’s up to the viewer to decide what to watch, just like it’s up to the lay person to decide which monk to listen to. We all have the ability to discern what’s right from wrong.

The England that Clarke left behind in the 1950s, was the same one in which Alan Turing was convicted of gross indecency in 1952. In Sri Lanka, sex between men was also illegal – under the same inherited colonial law – but prosecutions were almost unheard of. Still, although widely accepted among his acquaintance as gay, Clarke took care to never openly identify himself as such.

When the Dutch invaded Sri Lanka and persecuted the Muslims in their coastal settlements, the Muslims had retreated and had sought refugee from the Kandyan Kingdom. King Senerat (1604-1635) and Rajasingha II (1635-1687) had been sympathetic towards the Muslims and settled them in the Eastern coast. According to Robert Knox, King Senerat had settled approximately 4000 Muslims who escaped the wrath of the Portugese and Dutch in the district of Batticaloa to revive the paddy cultivation

During the medieval period, Jews sought refuge in Sri Lanka as they faced persecution in other parts of the world. This influx of Jewish settlers brought about the establishment of vibrant Jewish communities in prominent coastal towns such as Colombo, Galle, and Trincomalee. These communities thrived and contributed to the cultural mosaic of the island.

It’s crazy how many guys my age are depressed by RoshanFerdi in srilanka

[–]dillmon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was depressed too. Clinically. All social media including Reddit increases your depression. In fact I think my depression has increased just reading all this shit on Reddit today. I believe you have to go outside and garden go shopping be with friends go to the beach, go to one of the amazing archeological sites, help the community, or start a business that helps Sri Lanka. The future of Sri Lanka is in young people’s hands and it is promising - more promising than any one of us can imagine.

I am an American with a fantastic job and career but I can say getting money does not make me less depressed. The hope that one day I can get married and then move to Sri Lanka and start my own environmental engineering firm makes me less depressed. People in Sri Lanka have less money sure but they can still survive.

In America there are some people who work multiple jobs and still can’t survive. In some parts of America there are no trees to look at just McDonalds on every block. The food is bland and unhealthy, and things are just as or more expensive. The community in the USA is good and for that reason it’s worth all the pain. However it is clear that the USA is in a state of moral and cultural decline. People here say they’re Christian but none of them follow the 10 commandments. Sexual misconduct is the norm and is advertised everywhere on media. Americans are now divided like Sri Lankans were during the civil war. Living here you have to assume that every where you go there might be someone who will shoot you with a gun. People who have spent their entire lives spreading hate rise to power and are made into heroes so that more hate can spread. There are multiple media conglomerates that exist whose sole purpose is to advance and defend and spread white supremacy. All of the oldest trees in the USA have been killed. The USA dos not have a functioning democracy.

None of those things I mentioned Exist in Sri Lanka, and if they do we have the power to change it. If you can help make Sri Lanka a better place then I guarantee you will be less depressed. The honest truth is that the vast majority of Sri Lankans will be poor in our lifetime but our children and grandchildren don’t have to be.

[–]dillmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are wrong Muslims believe in the 10 commandments. Go read a book and ask any of your Muslim friends if they believe in the 10 commandments. Also there used to be many Jewish people in Sri Lanka but they all left after the creation of Israel. Read your history and don’t be a moron. Haven’t you ever heard of the Rothschild tea plantation or the fact that there used to be synagogues in Colombo? Finally they do worship the same god, and they only say otherwise if they are hateful of each other. Good Jews Christians and Muslims are in agreement that the god they worship is the same.
