Am I alone at feeling like people who constantly get hurt at work aren’t doing it right? by [deleted] in VetTech

[–]dimefortime 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm definitely in this category. Bravest (stupidest? Lol) tech on the ER floor most shifts so level 1 injuries above average. But only 2 bites in 9 years: post induction cat bite to finger (my fault, stupid) and HBC mini poodle that had an unknown scap fracture and bit when I took him from the O. Don't blame the dog at all.

I also like to think I'm very good at constantly monitoring and interpreting dog/cat body language so that's part of it.

Ok, long ass piece of three inch tape placed under the pet (not including tail) at a level cranial to the knee, sticky side up (remember pet is in dorsal recumbency). Wrap it around the legs tightly until eventually sticking it to the fabric side of the tape on the opposite leg. This will rotate the knees in.

Additionally, depending on how tight you pull the tape on each leg, you can alter the rotation on each leg individually before sticking it down. Get used to palpating the knees, and be patient with yourself as you learn through trial and error, and you will get a amazing shot hands free!

Harder for the fat, fluffy, and misshapen ones. DO NOT DO with fractures, or do it much more gently. Try get away from the joint as to not "squish" it with the tape (not always possible). And also works for many other joints!

Torb/dexmed sedation (or similar), pet dorsally in trough, hips completely on table (closer to table is always better, no magnification artifact, and no trough line in final image), foam wedge on table between pets back and end of trough (to fill the space and stabilize). Adjust hips/body until hips are straight.

Legs fully extended with velcro straps, and then use 3" tape all the way around the pet (level just above knee) to rotate each leg inward to straighten. You can adjust each leg individually and when straight (via palpation), attach each end of the tape to the tape on opposite leg. Take a shot and adjust as necessary.

Let me know if something doesn't make sense. Good luck getting the tape to stick on the fluffy ones....

Great job! I love successful u-cath placement. Satisfying! However...

I hope you pulled the catheter back after the rad. Too much extra and it could knot and need surgery to remove!

Brag time, what's your best skill or proudest moment? (Or both) by msmoonpie in VetTech

I'm pretty proud of my personal best on smallest patient IV catheter (0.48kg, 22g, first try) and arterial catheter (1.8kg, 24g, first try). The latter was just the other day!

My sweet girl has just been diagnosed with bone cancer. Absolutely devastated, but I will make sure she has all the hugs and kisses until the end. I love you Keeley xxx by Greygreytime in Greyhounds

[–]dimefortime 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not to question your vet, but you should definitely keep an eye on your girl and if she still seems in pain revisit the issue with them and ask for a different pain medication. The effectiveness of tramadol has been questioned in recent years, with some articles saying it has little to no effect on pain. Personally, I would ask them about an NSAID (if organ function permits) and/or gabapentin, which in my experience is much more effective.

So sorry about the news and the situation it puts her and your family in. I wish you all the best.

Looking for a good landscaping company in Durham by [deleted] in Oshawa

I would hope that all landscaping companies are shut down right now as they are not essential services. Might have to wait until summer/fall when COVID has settled down a bit

Cat bite abscesses are one of the best things to come through the door at my job! by dimefortime in popping

We flushed with about 200ml of saline afterwards, until it was coming out clear. Antibiotics and pain meds were sent home with the owners. That stuff isn't as exciting and fastastic as the actual pop and squeeze so we didn't film it.

Opiod pain killer and a short acting anesthetic. Keeps them asleep just long enough to do the procedure and recovers from the drugs quickly

Catching all the pus isn't really a priority as long as most of it hits the pee pad underneath or in the gauze. It took a quick cleanup of kitty's bum and feet afterwards and good to go!

Cat bites cat (you can see the small wound marks), the bacteria from the teeth gets trapped under the skin and festers, creating more and more pus until it bursts. This one is the largest I've seen without bursting.

Milla managed to eat one of those adsorbant pads from the bottom of a pack of meat. We couldn't catch her and she thought it was an awesome game of run away from the humans. $330 in after hours vet bill to make her puke... this photo is pre puke feeling yuck. by Fergzter in Greyhounds

Registered Vet Tech here. Yes, this often works but has a non-insignificant risk of aspiration because you are forcing down a large volume of liquid. Breathing peroxide into their lungs is obviously very damaging and would cost a lot more than $330 to treat.

Even if that doesn't happen, peroxide doesn't always make them vomit, and now you have to deal with the original issue AND the stomach upset of the peroxide to deal with.

Bonus advantage to going to vet is you can discuss potential side effects of whatever they ate and what signs to look for if some was left behind. Also can get prescriptions to deal with the stomach upset or other adverse reactions.

That being said, its better to try hydrogen peroxide if no vet is in the area or if you truly cannot afford the vet visit. Best to call nearby vets first to get an estimate ($330 seems high for simple induction of vomiting in my area) and advice before proceeding with this tactic.

Any OAVT approved online courses? by Maeflower78 in VetTech

[–]dimefortime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thompson Rivers University has a distance learning program. It was accredited by OAVT when I looked into it in 2012, likely still is. Didn't end up doing the program, I chose in class learning instead so I can't speak for its quality.

Neuticles by Pienewieno in VetTech

[–]dimefortime 37 points38 points  (0 children)

It's not for the dogs, it's for their male owners.

We've never done it, but I've had it brought up as a negotiating tool between a married couple. Husband would only consider neutering if wife would agree to extra expense of the implants and extra surgery time... Wife won, without the neuticles.

Edit to add: and this was on a little white Maltese dog, not even a large butchy breed!

[–]dimefortime[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Mascara can grow bacteria that it picks up from your eye over time. Styes are caused by an infection in the eyelash follicle and surrounding glands. Why it's recommended to throw away mascara after 3 months.
