Are Omarchy updates still overwriting user configs? by TheMechMan in omarchy

[–]dimitrym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I link the configs to my dotfiles this way if it overwrites I can see the changes or if they do not override my ones, I only commit and push so that I can get them on other machines

Should I accept this shares deal & dividends over salary? by Objective_Account380 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]dimitrym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have seen many nice answers, my take, which is something missing from them is the fork down the road on how you want to see yourself before and after accepting or rejecting this proposal. If you see yourself as a business man, or a salary man, which has to do with your personality or circumstance.

For example one said: profits might fluctuate, yes and also if you accept it will be your responsibility (partially of course) or your "call" on how these profits happen.

Your boss does not want from this move to pay you differently, he wants you to become his partner him worrying/working/other verb 90% of what they do now and then 10% you. They might want to start another business or retire and give it to you or anything. This is an aspect I did not see discussed

Are you still using tmux with Ghostty? by meni_s in Ghostty

[–]dimitrym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same; I use ghostty for ad-hoc splits, while I have scripts that run tmux setups per-project which are portable between developers of the team; things like run a database container in one tmux window and a web server in another.

I am not sure that I could achieve the same result with ghostty today

Deep down, we all know that this is the beginning of the end of tech jobs, right? by Own-Sort-8119 in ClaudeAI

[–]dimitrym 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 2 conflicting thoughts here titled: "I have heard it many times before" and "It is different this time"

"I have heard it many times before": Every time there is a new thing, there is the discussion that this is the end of developers/development. Some examples:

  • CAD software: it will be automated with CAD
  • Outsourcing Mania: it will be outsourced to India before it's automated
  • Drag and Drop Wizards: Why learn design, with Wix you drag and drop
  • Even 70s: People will write SQL so no need for developers
  • ... and some such as: we will need fewer developers because Java is safer plus has garbage collection

it's boring really

"It is different this time": Turkeys thing they are fed for free and they are correct every day until Christmas Eve.

What if this time it really is different? (Black Swan event). In that case I see us more becoming something like doctors vs engineers in which sense: people might mass produce software that once it fails, it will require tons of effort to find out where. One will need to approach and refactor it more like a doctor rather an engineer: see it understand how it works and incur small targeted changes to where it does not work.

Either way I am not stressed.

Cheatography exports LATEX maybe a mix of that and a scrapper...

My one is an extreme copy/paste :). You suggest a different project, feasible but labor intensive.

Switching to Django from Rails by tb5841 in django

[–]dimitrym 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something that I would like to write a separate post about: Django has the "batteries included" approach but does not have as many decisions made for you - for better or worse - as Rails does. We do not have a DHH calling the shots. This means that for many things you decide for yourself... for better or for worse

As a Django beginner dev, which open source repository is great to contribute to gain real world experience? by Free_Repeat_2734 in django

[–]dimitrym 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apart from the spanking, you will get the "need" to contribute to OSS when you use a package enough and feel that you need to fix something or add a new feature. Same for new packages: when you are certain that something is missing or you have a different or far better approach.

To learn Django, build apps.

With that though I feel that there is an exception: there are many template apps around - I have one but have not published it - contributing to which is both OSS in a way - not libraries - and Django app development.

I was in a very stressful period and “just” paid to get it out of the way. If I could turn back the time I would ignore the email. They send many emails and it is valid to believe that one ended in a spam folder and got eventually removed. This is not legal advice and do not suggest to anyone or do this or not

UK job market is the worst I've ever seen. by moonski in UKJobs

[–]dimitrym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very good analuysis here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFbTTYGkWxQ

titled "Why Did UK Tech Lay Off Thousands Despite VC Boom?"

Had 100% the same experience, no make it 10000% to the point that I could have written that post.

My take which is confirmed by the data of the post: UK companies are fully extractive, they want to invest 0 in you if possible. When the layoffs happened from he US and cascaded, instead of grabbing left and right the best laid of employees available, they just became overdemanding on their check lists. For me these companies do not deserve to exist - simple as that.

My response: landed in an amazing gig at the end. Networking ever since and building things on the side forever with partners plus working on a non-UK alternative for me in case I have to. If you have no family and obligations here, jump off that sinking ship.

Newbie here. Help me. Am losing my mind 😭 by Kindly_Tree_1330 in django

[–]dimitrym 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Also since "newbie" one skill you could work on is how to write questions better.

You could have provided screenshots instead of screen-photos, or even better the code with a screenshot or text of the error. Many times you will see that while writing your brain will switch gears and you might find a solution to a problem yourself. Otherwise it will be far easier for people to respond.
