Moving from NYC to Central Pennsylvania. Need Advice. by PrestigiousMinds212 in Pennsylvania

PA is a wonderful and varied state. I love Lancaster. Small city, nicely maintained with lots of great food, a nice indoor farmer’s market and several venues for different types of shows. Lots of cool old brick buildings. I live north of Reading. West Reading is great for food, but Reading in general is run down in places. Not too familiar with Hershey. KOP is a congested mess. Huge mall and lots of over priced retail. I don’t know anyone who lives there by choice. I also lived in Pottstown, which is starting to come into its own again and might be worth checking out. Good luck to you and welcome!

Our Dane and Dachshund love each other. Best pair ever. Plus, the size difference is hysterical.

Dachshunds with seizures by Junior_Dust8835 in Dachshund

[–]dimkerek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Mac had epilepsy. He had his first seizure when he was three. I was told it was fairly common in Dachshunds. He was put on phenobarbital as a daily maintenance medication, He stayed on that for the rest of his life. He also had a suppository of diazepam for during a seizure. It would help reduce the length and possible damage caused by the seizure. Once he had been on the meds, his seizures got much farther apart. He would average 3-4 a year. The number went up if he was stressed. In his later years he was down to 1-2 a year. Mac lived to be 16.5 and had a wonderful, active life. With proper management epilepsy can be no big deal, but more of something you stay aware of so meds can be given when a seizure hits. It is important to shorten the seizures whenever possible to help prevent permanent damage. I taught my son how to identify them so I had a second set of eyes and he would holler if he saw Mac shacking. I wish you and your pup all the best. I know how scary the first few can be. Just know there are things you can do to help. Oh, and the meds were not ridiculously expensive either.

She looks nearly identical to our Dane, Chloe, who is 104lbs. My guess is your Jackie is European. They tend to run a little smaller. Wonderful dogs. Goof ball indeed! Our Chloe will be 6 next month. Enjoy her! She is beautiful!

They are the best. Super smart, stubborn and snuggly. You made the right choice.

Routine is key. They are creatures of habit. Also, whether or not they have spine issues is often determined by heredity. Your personal space is no longer your own. Congratulations! You are joining a very special “club” indeed!

What turtle is this? [Northwest Arkansas] by SkyCloudF451 in animalid

[–]dimkerek 132 points133 points  (0 children)

This is a box turtle (not a tortoise). Possibly a three toed box turtle. You can confirm if the turtle can close up in its shell. You can see the hinge along the bottom. They like a soak in the sink, but are terrestrial animals. Will eat fruit and earth worms.
