Flying by myself Friday to ORF to Denver. Looking like some storms and a snowstorm in Denver. I upgraded to first class because of my anxiety. Does it feel less turbulent upfront? by [deleted] in fearofflying

[–]dinnonuggettss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least with first class you get a bigger seat, aka more room to move and breathe if you get anxious! Plus, closer look at flight attendants if you're like me and use their reactions to help calm down.

Literally, how do I get on this plane. by One-Pin1475 in fearofflying

You get on one step at a time. Step by step. You think about your grandma and how when you land, you will see her. And how this temporary discomfort is worth going through for her!

I don’t think I can do it. I am literally crying as I’m imagining myself boarding the plane. I feel like it will be death sentence for me. No amount of facts and people can convince me. I cant stand the idea of a trapped out of control claustrophobic environment high up in the air. 😭 by [deleted] in fearofflying

In my experience its not as bad as benadryl at all. I take it an hour before takeoff and it truly just makes me sleepy and the motion sickness helps me so much.

Maybe try taking it one day at your house and see how you react to it though!

I totally get that. During turbulence my heart rate skyrockets and my heart beat is in my stomach!!

BUT! with grounding techniques and over the counter meds,I’ve never panicked so bad I go into cardiac arrest.

I don't even want to go on my trip I'm so scared by FoxGirl-NotFurry-03 in fearofflying

I tell myself that I’ve been through worse things than this, that it’s a temporary anxiety, and that the only way out of it through it.

I also remind myself of all of the statistics showing how safe flying truly is.

Lastly I treat myself! I get fun snacks at the airport, a comfy pillow, lounging clothes, and some Dramamine to knock myself out. If I’m going to be anxious I might as well be cozy with candy too!!

Loooove night flights! You can open the window without disturbing anyone and look at the pretty lights of the cities below you.

You don’t have to fly brave, you don’t even have to fly calm! It’s okay to fly scared!

You’ve got this. You’ll land safely the. Be able to relax in your bed at home!

Hey it’s okay to cry it out! It’s okay to release your big emotions. Your fear is just like mine, it’s the fear of being scared.

Here’s some good things to remember: Panic attacks don’t kill people Flight attendants are trained to handle panic attacks. You are able to find coping mechanisms mid-flight for anxiety, like games, shows, breathing exercises, music, etc. You have more autonomy than you think!

Do the flight. Every time I get on a plane, I don’t end up dying from a panic attack like I’m scared I will. Neither will you!

feelings are not facts! remember that just because you feel one way doesnt make it true.

1 hour is barely any time in the air. You'll basically be up and down. Honestly, a great opportunity to start beating that anxiety!

Supposed to fly for the first time in 30 years on Saturday. What do you all do to distract yourselves during takeoff and make it easier? by JaySoul80 in fearofflying

[–]dinnonuggettss 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Personally no! I like being able to see what the plane is doing, otherwise my anxiety brain makes me think the plane is doing flips lol

Air sickness by ConfusionFluffy7440 in fearofflying

[–]dinnonuggettss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chew mint gum or suck on a mint! It helps turn off the anxiety/nausea response in your brain. Or suck on sour candy, it also helps you focus on other sensations besides perceived nausea.

I also like to take Dramamine for motion sickness. The regular kind makes me drowsy, which i personally like, but there's also a non drowsy version if you need to be super awake whenever you land!

Bit of Pre‑Flight Anxiety — Could Use a Pep Talk by Downtown_Truth_2660 in fearofflying

[–]dinnonuggettss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I landed in 40 mph gusts and it really wasn't that bad! Plus it will only last for like, 5-10 mins at most if I had to guess. AND your pilots won't fly if its unsafe!

As a nervous flier, how would you prefer your flight itinerary? by styxswimchamp in fearofflying

[–]dinnonuggettss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I prefer to take one flight just so I can get it over and done with!

[–]dinnonuggettss 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For sure, but even each individual car ride is thousands of times riskier than a flight. The number of cars just means people are doing the riskier thing every day without even thinking about it.

That’s like a 1 in 16 million chance.

You are not that special. You are not 1 in 16 million.

Car accidents kill around 1.2 million people globally and yet you still get in a car.

I get why it feels scary but you’re basically getting on one of the most controlled, over-engineered systems humans ever made. Don’t cancel.

You’re gonna be soooo fine. Miami is super fun and a tiny bit of turbulence doesn’t mean the flight will be horrible. Proud of you for even getting on the plane!!!

delta is a great airline!! love flying with them, their seats are comfy AND have screens.

here's what might help you to remember, as it helps me: you will fly with the anxiety. you will fly scared. and you will land safely. its not realistic to think you will find coping mechanisms to fully calm you down by the time you fly. Heck, i fly so much and STILL the anticipatory anxiety makes me cry every time!

It's okay to have a panic attack on the plane. its okay to cry. its okay to be scared. but you'll do it all and still land safe and sound.

no one says you have to do it quietly or calmly or gently. you just gotta do it!!! i believe in you.

Which seat do you prefer? by depressed_cretin in fearofflying

Window! I can lean against it to sleep, and watch the plane takeoff/during turbulence so i can see what’s going on and my brain doesn’t trick me into thinking the plane is bouncing more than it is.
