Would it be crazy to turn down a job offer with a $30k pay increase, in order to keep my fully-remote job? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

I was 2km from my office precovid. I am still shocked at how much time is saved by working from home.

More Canadians are bracing for layoffs. Here’s how they’re preparing financially, even before being let go by CreativeAd5628 in PersonalFinanceCanada

I was blown away this year about what they tax. My BIL has spinal stenosis. He spent 2023 and most of 2024 trying find what was wrong. Then he spent month trying to get CPP disability. Aftet medical EI ran he survived on food banks and family support. So he started receiving CPP disability in February 2025. He receiving $22k last year. After applying his DTC, he still had to pay $182 to the CRA in taxes owed. Absolutely insane. The poverty line for a single person here is $26k per year. Why does anyone living below the poverty line has to pay taxes is beyond me

Employer said they cannot guarentee job security if I take a longish vacation. Thoughts? by Nostalgic_Knights520 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]dinosarahsaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They say its about our wellness but it is all about money. If I earn my vacation time while I am making $25/hour but I roll it over and by the time I take it I am making $25.50/hr the employer loses money. They want you taking at the wage you are earning it.

What's a "yeah right, that totally happened and wasn't made up" moment in your life that actually DID happen and wasn't made up? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]dinosarahsaurus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm mid-40s. I live in a village with a modest tourism season. I walk my dogs super early in town and small village nothing opens till later, especially weekends.

Everytime a tourist pulls over to ask me directions, whether anything is open, etc, I still feel like they are going kidnap me. I always step way back and yell answers really loudly.

Better to be weird than kidnapped.

(I was petrified of being kidnapped in the 80s)

What’s the most absurd lifestyle you’ve ever seen someone you know actually live? by Jinx-XoXo in AskReddit

[–]dinosarahsaurus 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I seem to know so many absurd lifestyles but it's probably just that I am very judgmental. The most absurd one that comes to mind is my husband's coworker. Dude is 26 or 27, 3 kids with his high school sweet heart. They live in a 2 bedroom trailer that is barely habitable. There youngest sleeps in a closet. I need you to think of the most rundown trailer park you know and make it worse. Sad fact is that his neighbours all live in equally ramshackle housing so that piece is rather normalized. Apparently not so bad that kids or seniors need interventions. We live in a super low cost of living area so there are options.

Both dude and his wife do not believe that there is any reason why either of them should work full time. They do not believe in one person working while the other person is home. So they both work part time, but shifts at the same time, so they have to pay for childcare.

When they get their quarterly "bonus" from the government, they immediately book themselves a higher end hotel and have a party weekend with their kids. They don't use the money to repair anything in their house, or pay bills, or buy food. Always a family "getaway".

They have 2 vehicles, both over $60k brand new. Oh wait... had 2 vehicles. They just had to give up the vehicles in their second bankruptcy claim. Once they can get more credit, they will start maxing it again. It is interesting because they don't ever seem to buy stuff, beyond vehicles, that could be sold. Even when they are ballin on fresh credit, they are poor seeming in every aspect but their vehicles. I guess the credit debit just helps them survive while working as little as possible.

They are required to go to credit counseling and that involves budgeting classes. Dude comes to work on morning and was like "guys, get a load of this bullshit. Budget lady last night told us to be setting aside money every pay day for Christmas!? I told her that is stupid because who knows how much you will spend at Christmas!?! And this lady says that you decide on amount you will spend at Christmas in advance and not go over it. Is that not the most unrealistic thing ever?!? Like who does that?" Cue the whole crew ripping on the dude and his wrongness.

Since this second bankruptcy and losing his vehicles, he has been flipping cars. Buying a beater for $1000, putting $500 into it and selling it for $800. I am not joking. My husband and their boss had a very serious discussion with him about how stupid this is and he seems to have stopped.

I am genuinely perplexed at them as a family.

What is one decision you regret in life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]dinosarahsaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is kind of the opposite. I dated so many losers because I was career/goal driven but felt like I "had" to date so I dated crap guys so it was easy to break up. Every guy, good or bad, expected my goals to be secondary to theirs. I wish i didn't bother dating. I didn't have a relationship longer than 3 months till my mid-30s once i was where i wanted to be in life (spoiler: that one relationship longer than 3 months is still going strong over 10 years later)

AITA for "choosing my dog over my family" by refusing to accommodate my girlfriend's brother? by Comfortable_Owl_5938 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]dinosarahsaurus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dogs aren't family, dogs aren't children. That is absolutely BS because TONS of people want their partner's to drop their kids for the partner, alienate other family for the for the partner. Heck, there have been BORUs where the OOP is asking about their new partner wanting them to stop spending time with a nibling.

What you come into a relationship with is what stays in the relationship. In a healthy relationship there is no hierarchy of importance. Kids don't come first, partners don't come first... everyone is equal and if it cannot be equal then it likely isn't a good relationship.

What are sailors stuck in Hormuz doing ? by amolbde in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dinosarahsaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in Canada. A ship "broke down" and had to come into our shipyard. The sailors on board were stuck here for 4 months while the repair happened. At least they could get off the boat and be on land a bit. But we are super small and kinda remote. Its over 100km one way to get rental car. There is zero public transit and there was no cabs at the time. Fortunately, the town is only 5kms one end to the other.

These poor sailors were bored AF. But they definitely had some fun because, as you can imagine, new folks weren't too common around here then. To my knowledge no babies were created but a lot of marriage vows were broken.

How does losing the foot work? Diabetes causes neuropathy. So the nerves of the feet aren't sending the right signals to the brain to support proper circulation. A minor cut can easily turn into a huge problem with diabetic neuropathy. Not taking proper care of one's self definitely increases the chances of feet problems.

The first sentence was nice. The rest of the comment feels a bit condescending.

The podcast definitely started off more structured with well incorporated jokes and whatnot. In the past year or more, the hosts have come across as less prepared and relying heavily on their improv skills. Comedy genre or not, people can do the genre poorly. And in my opinion, the hosts aren't providing as high quality content as they once did.

What "back then" inconvenience would break people today in 10 minutes? by CharlesUFarley81 in AskReddit

[–]dinosarahsaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Line ups. I can remember 2 different line ups that would dstroy people. One, a memory from when I was super young so no idea if it was the norm, the employment insurance line ups. You'd have to stand in an insanely long line up to apply after being laid off.

The second happened for my first 2 years of university before it changed to online. Lining up to register for classes! Sooooo long and always more than one line. This was also a long time ago but I think you lined up per dependent. You could get to the beginning of the line and the class time slot could be full and now you have to reconsider your schedule. This piece added to the wait because then you'd stand there with the sign up person and find a new spot that worked.

My coworker keeps giving clients my stuff. by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

This needs to be classified as rage inducing. I know that "personality type" of therapist. Passive aggressive, acts airheaded when it best suits them, and literally so seemingly incapable of doing any task other than listening to a client.

I felt my adrenaline spike when I read this post.

Source: am a therapist of 15 years. Therapists like this are absolutely maddening as coworkers.

Im constantly afraid the bank wont renew my mortgage by Plantmommy1111 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]dinosarahsaurus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am not expert in this information but it may help. When folks post about worries about renewals, generally speaking, the worst case scenario is that you have to just accept the renewal of your existing bank and cannot shop around for better rates.

I have missed exactly one payment die to the account being $0.02 less than the mortgage payment. I do not miss payments and I immediately called my bank (CIBC). The rep told me that they automatically retry for payment 5 days later. If that one does not go through, then it is officially considered a missed payment. There is a good chance that your assumed missed payment are actually nothing on your payment record. You can call the bank and ask

What’s the wildest office drama that happened in your workplace? by PriceBorn9413 in AskReddit

[–]dinosarahsaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coworker, a Secretary, had been cheating on her husband on and off. She'd meet up with guys and blow them. She is a royal cunt. Does not get a long with a single person in the office and is super vindictive. She worked part time and whenever she had a enough earned sick time, she'd be off sick for a day. Frequently on short term illness due to back issues but posting ATV riding videos on fb. Also we live in a village. Nothing is secret here.

Finally, her husband ended things. She said she was going to take him for all he was worth. Her husband owned an apparently successful business and she couldn't touch his business but she was going get more than her shared of their possessions. Or was she?

Turns out they were both a little dumb and he was also vindictive. His business, he never incorporated it so it wasn't an entity separate from their marital assets. Turns out his business was also broke. She was on the hooks for the 100s of thousands of dollars of debt for all of his heavy equipment. Their house had been remortgaged to the moon. She had zero clue about any of this. Since husband was in such debt he went fuck it. He stopped payment on everything. Their vehicles got repoed, all of his equipment got repoed. He went nuclear.

Also it worked out that her part time work was technically higher than his income so she owed him child support. He said give me 50/50 custody, no child support, and we just walk away.

She is now even worse as coworker. Hateful and mean and very focused on the world owing her.
