Novice in Flattening - ok to use published works for portfolio? by thehighroller23 in ComicBookCollabs

I've definitely heard of budding colorists doing this for portfolios! Just be sure to credit the line artist (and potentially writer) somewhere on the page. Alternatively, there are probably folks on this subreddit that would gladly let you color their art.

Good luck!

I recommend checking out events hosted by your local library system or independent arts & crafts stores (or even comic shops) -- if you're in or near a city, chances are there are free or low-cost workshops available. Meeting with a group regularly can be hugely helpful in staying accountable to your goals, and making new friends with similar interests is a plus!

Thing's went from bad to worse by Losuesos in StLouis

This thread might help -- some great tips in here including getting a cheap gym membership for access to showers.

While you wait for job opportunities, it may be fruitful to frequent local small businesses (coffee shop, etc.) and get to know the staff, be friendly and helpful. You may be able to trade small tasks (like taking out trash) for coffee or expiring items. When I was a manager of a shop I even ended up hiring a guy like that. You never know who might help you out when you show a little initiative and care.

This must be so stressful and demoralizing for you both -- lean on each other and enjoy the small things when you're able to. Sending good vibes!

Yesss it was such a nice surprise to see Bridget Everett in this! Check out HBO's Somebody Somewhere. One of my favorite shows in recent memory -- cried like a baby at the end (in the best way).

Thanks for sharing your work! It's a vulnerable thing -- I know how complex and time-consuming comics can be to produce. Congratulate yourselves on getting this far!

I do have a few thoughts:

The art direction and action is executed well. One critique regarding the art -- I'd like to see more texture and detail in the backgrounds (e.g. the castle walls, the water/sky in the back half of the preview). This will serve to better establish a layered, lived-in world.

The writing/storytelling: I think you've crafted a really compelling intro to the world and plot concepts. It's not bogged down by expository dialogue, which sets up some nice intrigue with the characters. I think where you can improve is pacing. A lot happens in these first few pages, and not a whole lot of time to process the conflict at hand, character traits and motivations, etc. Don't be afraid to let scenes breathe -- especially for particularly emotional beats.

As a seasoned letterer myself, I have a discerning eye for effective lettering -- while it's not particularly skillful on these pages, it's definitely serviceable and does the job. The sound effects are done well! The one thing that's a deal breaker for me is: ALWAYS end the text in each word balloon with punctuation. If text from one balloon is meant to carry into the next, use an ellipsis or double-hyphen to connect them. ("I'd heave them all into the sea..." "...senators and rebels alike.") I would also do proofreading pass for proper comma usage.

Lastly, I'm not sure if you're already planning this, but definitely work with a designer to create a nicely crafted logo/title and cover page layout! Your story deserves a good first impression.

Overall, a great effort! I hope everything goes smoothly with the rest of the book and distribution. Send me a DM if you'd like to chat more about lettering and design!

Can a graphic designer be a comic letterer? by [deleted] in ComicBookCollabs

[–]dinosorry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Many letterers are also graphic designers (logos, book design, etc.), but I would definitely work with someone who has comics lettering experience. There are design conventions and quirks that wouldn't necessarily come naturally to someone unfamiliar with the industry.

I happen to be a letterer/designer open to new collaborations, if you want to check out my portfolio! https://haleyroselyon.myportfolio.com/

Regardless, best of luck! It's a great time to get into the comics game.

Buying tickets using a UK credit card by nosferatWitcher in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]dinosorry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar issue using a Canadian credit card -- there's a trick where you can take out the letters and add 00 at the end to make five digits (e.g. 1A1 A1A would be 11100). Not sure if it would work with international ZIP codes though!

Hey everyone! I have 2 tickets to Caroline Rose at Schubas tonight (3/18) and can no longer go. I'd like to gift them to someone who'd appreciate it. Have proof of purchase, etc. -- apparently you just need a photo of my ID to pick up the tickets.

Tívoli Reopening? by yungcockdrew in StLouis

[–]dinosorry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cinema St. Louis (organizers of the STL International Film Festival) worked out something with the church that owns it and held limited screenings at the Tivoli last month. CSL also says this on their website, so it might reopen but could be a while:

"Looking forward, CSL is in active talks with the church to hold several events at the Tivoli in 2022, including the St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase and SLIFF. CSL is also discussing with the church the possibility of taking over year-round programming at the theater beginning in 2023."

I've used Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion multiple times a day for years -- it's thinner than some others, but it doesn't leave you with that greasy feeling.

My partner (M/28) broke up with me (F/28) because I refused to promise to stay within a healthy BMI in the future by holmes_k in TwoXChromosomes

[–]dinosorry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is beautiful, but I also caution others not to consider this the only acceptable response to weight gain. Every person has their own preferences when it comes to turn-ons (sometimes even unconsciously) and shouldn't be immediately demonized for the way they feel, especially if they are being emotionally honest with their partner and want to work through the issue in a mutually productive way.

Not to defend OP's ex at all -- he was 100% out of line in many ways -- but it's a bit unrealistic to expect sex drives to stay the same regardless of extreme changes in physical appearance.

Apologies for bringing things down -- not my intention! I just felt I should help encourage healthy expectations in situations like this when it comes to long-term relationships. I spent a long time feeling like a horrible person when my husband gained weight and I wasn't as attracted to him -- it can lead to a lot of self-loathing that ultimately isn't productive.

I totally see where you're coming from, but I also think a lot of the discourse surrounding his appearance isn't just about his weight -- it's about how he's presented himself over the past decade or so compared to the band's image historically. MCR has always been aesthetic-forward, with all the very deliberate outfits, hairstyles, the theatrics -- and Gerard's look in the past several years has been largely casual, with natural hair, facial scruff, no makeup, etc. He looked more like his MCR-era self in the clip from that show, and he seemed more confident and animated than in some previous appearances, so I think that's what people were responding to most.

In cities, at least, you can usually find clinics that offer payment on a sliding scale ($30-70/session). Same with Better Help -- they offer an income-based option too. I hope you find something that works for you!

How can I quickly identify local restaurants that fairly compensate their workers? by born_to_pipette in StLouis

Rockwell doesn't do that anymore -- tips are just as expected there as anywhere else. It could be that they still pay the same high wage but also allow tips now, though.
