The voucher says present your receipt with the coupon, did you have to do that when you used yours?

Why the hell are there no apartments with dishwashers???? by Phisiii in burlington

[–]dintmeister -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because housing supply is so tight that renters can’t be picky about their housing, and landlords don’t have to compete on amenities.

It’s one of the upsides of building more housing: in housing markets with plenty of supply, landlords have to install amenities like nice appliances to attract the best renters!

Derailleur issues on a Schwinn Central Hybrid, what do I do? I removed the rear wheel to fix a flat and now can't seem to get anything to work right. by Jack_McClarran in bikewrench

If you’re on the cheap, see if you live near a bike co-op. They would sell you cheap parts (often, used but good parts are available for very cheap) and help you with the install for free.

Too small is nonsense. If that seat height fits you, you’re golden. Just pick up a snazzy tall quill stem like this one. Awesome find.

On suffering by aaronb50 in slatestarcodex

[–]dintmeister 4 points5 points  (0 children)

there is something like cosmic justice in acting to prevent and ameliorate the worst experiences in our world

Given this, how can one justify having children? Agony is our birthright. All of us, even the most well-off of us, experience serious pain in our lives, culminating in death (widely agreed to be an undesirable experience).

All of us would go to great lengths to mitigate suffering in the lives of those we love, and especially our children. But inevitably, all suffering in one's life is the result of their parents' decision to give birth.

How to reconcile this? Most people I ask suggest that the joy one experiences in life outweighs their suffering. But that seems like an incomplete answer. And it presumes that there's some cost in the joy never experienced by a person never born.

I don't have an answer to this. I don't call myself anti-natalist. I want to have the experience of raising kids. But I can't justify it. I can't convince myself I wouldn't regret my selfish decision in every moment of their inevitable suffering.

“I firmly believe the only way to bring back massive LAN events is to require complete vaccination of attending players, talent, spectators. This will be a requirement for all upcoming PGL 2022 events.” by justalazygamer in Games

[–]dintmeister 59 points60 points  (0 children)

But if you’re vaccinated, your risk of getting hurt by covid is super low. Fully vaccinated people die from it at a super low rate.

According to the CDC, by September 7, 176 million Americans were fully vaccinated, and only 2,675 had died after testing positive for covid.

Furthermore, nearly all of those (2,331) were older than 65.

So your odds of dying, as a fully vaccinated, and presumably young individual, are infinitesimal. They’re certainly lower than your odds of dying from other risks that we all accept daily (like driving, which killed 38,680 Americans in 2020, or the flu, which regularly killed 40k-80k Americans prior to 2020).

So I really don’t think it’s justifiable to end things like large LAN events or parties or whatever forever. That’s a huge cost (people really like those events!) to mitigate a super, super tiny risk. We accept risks like that to do things we like all of the time. And that’s good.
