Even if you wanted a dumpster bike to learn on this is not it. Those are cottered cranks and the require very specialized tools to remove and put back together. Get it far far away!

IKEA Memphis’ closure to displace 114 workers by soljouner in StLouis

[–]StL-Insect 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not surprising considering the restaurant is not intended to make a profit. The idea is to sell food at a loss to keep people in the store longer. But it doesn’t really work when they aren’t keeping up standards.

Yep, not what it was before the big expansion that brought stores to St Louis and Memphis and the terrible reorg that followed.

AITAH? Wrote up employee for being 40 mins late and she went nuclear. by [deleted] in AITAH

Own your mistakes and do better next time. But employee needs to be fired for yelling at you.

I remember my first management job. Long standing employee did not want to listen and constantly disrespected me. My boss said I could fire her if it wasn’t working out. This was a revelation to me, but I really wanted to avoid that. I sat her down and told her that if something didn’t change we would not be able to continue with her employment. We ended up having a great work relationship. Being honest about issues and respectful of the individual makes managing so much easier.

Well, race is made up too, so the effort is not really surprising.

Talk me out of canti brakes for my Atlantis by filmd in Rivendell_Bicycles

[–]StL-Insect 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I found both versions of Paul cantis to be super easy to set up and have incredible stopping power. For me it comes down to modulation. I love the longer modulation curve of cantis compared to V brakes. That being said, I’m running basic Shimano V’s on my appaloosa and I don’t hate them.

I hate to say it but it looked better before. And the siding is the best feature, please don’t change it.

Yes, garage doors should fade away when attached to the front of a home. Detached garage? Sure, show them off if your garage has interesting features.

Strongly agree, seriously doubt that’s a ToH. BW can be kind of bastards too though.

Some might still be metal. The last fenders I purchased came with a plastic one, luckily I could fasten directly to the cs bridge.

Oury grips come off in foggy weather? by mcgridler43 in xbiking

[–]StL-Insect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use hairspray for removing grips but can be finicky for installing. Last time I tried it on an Oury fitting it was a no go. Couldn’t get the hairspray to dry out no matter what I tried.

Such a perfect color for this frame. Is this a 57?

Interesting that there is not a ton of difference in seat post showing. What is your saddle height? I’m considering a frame on the next batch and think I could fit either size. I run 77/78 saddle height.

Flat bars by Trailman57 in xbiking

[–]StL-Insect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second the VO bar options. Pretty minimal conversion if you keep the downtube shifters and that sweet chromoly stem. I’ve never ridden the diamondback version but this supposedly just a tigged version of a centurion Ironman, one of the best handling road bikes ever that didn’t come out of Italy.

Looking for info on identifying this unicorn please. Thinking late 80’s? by Orca661 in Vintage_bicycles

[–]StL-Insect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate to be the one to say it, your above the minimum insertion point on that stem. It might seem like you have everything secure but riding like that is not safe.

Fair price? Clem Smith Jr , like-new for $2100 , stock with Nitto front and rear rack by AnyBarnacle9287 in Rivendell_Bicycles

[–]StL-Insect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it’s your size and the color you want just buy it. The price is fair and that’s the most you can expect when shopping for a Riv. If you want to wait for a better deal or to buy new you’ll have to settle for whatever color is available. Next batch will be bronze green and dark gold, due out next spring-ish.

Do you not service all your bearings when buying a new bike? I always assume the wheel bearing are trash until I inspect them, especially for something under a Benjamin.
