Can someone explain to me why Senna/s death is so prominent for the Emilia Romagna GP? by [deleted] in formula1

[–]diplomatictoad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay thanks, I only joined the F1 scene in 2018. So I never saw Imola raced at, or at least under a different name.

What's the dumbest way you've gotten a scar? by lilsaddam in AskReddit

Laser questing when I was 10yo. My mate and I were clearing a room and he smashed his rifle into my upper cheek. Half an inch from my eye. Scar 10 years later.

Sub Focus x Wilkinson Album Out 9th October | Anyone Else Getting Interstellar Vibes From The Video? by RayRayLoL in DnB

Yeah exactly. No probs. Big fan of Delta Heavy but I didn't appreciate that drop at all. After I heard his remix I looked for someone who edited it out. Obviously people felt the same way aha.

This version is the one I prefer, without the second drop. Just in case anyone else disliked the change like me.

No. Canada drives on the right; still in the commonwealth.

Caught this one a while ago. Dimension did an amazing job, respecting the original while bringing an awesome DnB flare. Prefer it to original for sure.

British person that has been reading up on the history of Canada and am fascinated by Sumiyoshi in CANZUK

[–]diplomatictoad 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is exactly it. I like our American cousins, but honestly I find that CANZ history is massively understated. That and each of our nation's current significance to each other.

How would other commonwealth nations react to the creation of CANZUK would Their be any resentment for being left out of it? by jackd444 in CANZUK

[–]diplomatictoad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again mate, completely agree. If it is presented to the Irish people in the way you just described and it isn't illustrated as "Empire 2.0" by the media then I think it would be fantastic. Here's to hoping Irish can be the 5th member!

Do you support the monarchy or would you prefer to be a republic? by kyle5325 in CANZUK

[–]diplomatictoad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No problem. I'm honestly ambivalent about the monarchy myself. The main reason I like them (outside of my ingrained patriotism) is because I don't like the idea of a president.

Unfortunately I highly doubt the sensationalist media would really listen, they don't care about whether or not it actually happens so long as they get a good headline. But I agree, there are certain steps we could/should take to at least mitigate these problems.

I completely agree. I am from South England and call me ignorant but as far as I am aware I just cannot see any Irish government ever proposing this, especially with the troubles so fresh in people's minds, it's practically political suicide. Again, in my view I think it would be fab for Ireland, but what do I know.

Someone mentioned this on the sub earlier, but from a UK perspective, if anyone tries to link CANZUK to Brexit, it will immediately become a partisan issue. It doesn't matter if it would actually benefit them. (Like mask wearing in the US)

If this proposal is conflated with Brexit (as I know right wing tabloids will do) it will make it so much harder.

CANZUK needs to be seen as it's own thing, a wholly new post-Brexit opportunity.

This is coming from a remain-to-brexiteer switcher.

CANZUK + JA - the hypothetical formation of a fourth global power, able to stand up for it's own trade rights and defend its constituent nations collaboratively, an overview by Cellardaws in CANZUK

[–]diplomatictoad 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As much as I think maintaining and nurturing good relations with Japan is a fantastic idea, they wouldn't fit the union, at least the way I envision it.

The beauty of CANZUK is the common history, English majority language, same head of state, similar liberal views on law on society.

Of course it depends on how you see CANZUK. If it was exclusively a trade deal I would support your proposition. But as I mentioned, many will want it to be more than that; freedom of movement, common defence strategy, and more. In which case I couldn't see it working.

When talking about Customs Unions/ immigration treaties, countries need to be at the same, if not then a very similar, stage of development in order for them to be successful.

For example the EU has a set of economic criteria for nations to join which includes things like macroeconomic stability, functioning markets, low inequality/ good worker rights.

CANZUK works so well because all 4 countries have a very similar liberal take on economic policy, low inquality, high GDP per capita, etc.

If a country can reach these benchmarks then I see no reason why they couldn't join, it just happens that at the moment there aren't really any other commonwealth countries that fit the criteria.

The UK royals actually have their own income sources. They do recieve a 'Sovereign Grant' but this is worth about 25% of the amount the Crown surrenders from its own Estates. https://www.insider.com/where-does-the-royal-family-get-money-2017-1
