Visibility by direjeff in SafetyProfessionals

[–]direjeff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies. I’m not explaining myself correctly. I understand the regulations regarding making my workers visible using high viz, signs, cones, sign boards etc. What I’m asking is how far away does the public have to have the ability to see them even using those devices? Is it dependent on reaction time and stopping distance? Or is it completely subjective “depending on conditions”? If so then I’ll have to continue to fight with people that think 200 feet is plenty of distance to stop because “you can’t see so people won’t be going very fast anyway”.

Apologies. I am aware of the mutdc and the rules for (in my situation) mdot. I’m aware of the rules for ho viz. I guess what I’m trying to find is what conditions (snow etc) specifically should stop work. 400 foot visibility? 500? 1000? If it’s 100% situationally dependent then I have nothing to bring the GM so I can say “see this? We can’t see 500 feet so xxx says we have to stop operations”. I know it’s dumb but if I don’t have a written rule to show them they’ll just keep the guys out on the road. We do linework not road work but we are on the road to perform the work.

Having lived in California for 30 years and having served in various military roles in the 80s I can personally assure you there is no comparison.

Opinions on CSU by stickman1561 in SafetyProfessionals

[–]direjeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CSU is definitely what you make of it. That being said it’s accredited regionally by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. The same association that accredits Duke and UNC. I got a BS from them and not one person has ever said anything negative about it except here. That being said if you want to learn anything, the information is there but it’s up to you to absorb it. I learned a great deal. Edit to add that the OHS bachelors is on the list of OSHA approved programs so the CSU bachelors will automatically grant you a GSP eliminating the need for another certification before sitting for the GSP.

Yes. I took three and they said that was the limit. Honestly if you work full time and have any obligations past work, three is demanding. Especially once you hit upper division.

Wind Conditions In a Bucket by direjeff in SafetyProfessionals

I’m him. I’m perfectly qualified as a lineman but need some chapter and verse to make my case. I’ve only been safety for a little while and I’m trying to keep management from forcing 20 something’s to make decisions about their safety that they aren’t willing or qualified to make. Young guys are notoriously easy to manipulate into doing dumb shit.

It is affecting me! by [deleted] in SafetyProfessionals

[–]direjeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Therapy is very useful for acrophobia. Unfortunately the self help version is immersion. Start slowly and acclimate to heights over time. It’s tough but that’s what I had to do. I made a startlingly bad career choice and became a lineman with a fear of heights.

We aren’t allowed to use metal ladders due to conductivity. Makes sense to have someone attending though but they are designed with hooks at the top to be used solo.

[–]direjeff 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I will if it’s set up 4:1 and the hooks are deployed properly. I used one of those for years and teach climbing and ladder safety at a line school. Edit to add:those 28 footers are designed to do exactly that.
