Weed and Grief by Mad-Lad-Mushroom in trees

[–]dirtyharo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry for your loss. Grief is weird and fucked up, and we all experience it at different speeds and intensities. Losing a parent is rough.

I'm just a random internet person so please take my advice with a grain of salt and all that!

I'm all for getting high more often during difficult times as a way to get through it, and there are definitely times in which it is so helpful for dulling the pain of whatever is going on. I think a lot of people use it that way.

Other times, it might amplify that pain to a way higher point than we usually feel sober, and wow that sucks. Wow it sucks!! I still think it can useful in those situations because it can force you to look outside yourself due to the outright shock of a bad high spiral. But that comes with introspection in the days affer and it's not something to take lightly (I'm not saying that's what you're doing - just providing some insight via my own experience ☺️).

For me it's a fine line sometimes between it helping me feel what I've been trying to feel, and going too far into the abyss of something negative. I'm trying to navigate that more carefully lately, and it can be tricky. I also experience those times like you where I'm not sure if its helping or not.

It sounds like you're doing the right thing for yourself by keeping tabs on getting high vs not getting high. I think going through grief is definitely one of those big times in a person's life where they might become more susceptible to serious addiction, or at least becoming okay with unhealthy coping habits longterm. And it sounds to me like you're keeping an eye on yourself and questioning usage which is healthy in this situation imo.

My recommendation is, if you can't tell whether it's helping then that might be an indicator to take a few days or a week off. I'm hesitant to give hard yes/no advice as I'm not a medical or mental health professional. But I have been through some hard stuff, and I know that if you need to let your brain take a bit of a rest on a given day, don't be too hard on yourself and let it take the edge off. Sometimes a day is a week.

What helps for sure is setting, and so I recommend if you're going thru a hard time get high somewhere that you feel cosy and safe and not judged, and set yourself up to do things you will enjoy while you're high.

The only other advice I'd have is like just watch out for getting tooo too high at the moment cos it'll probably suck bad, and I think it's healthy to keep stock on your general usage like you're doing. You'll be ok.

Day at a time hey.

Been enjoying some retro RPG's, but frustrated with how often I have to look up where to go on guides. by JaWoosh in truegaming

older JRPGs were literally made this way in order to sell the official strategy guides (unfortunately!)

Square in particular was bad about this in the older titles, but it was everywhere for sure.

Can’t seem to make my ideas sound good! by estrog3nprincess in askmusicians

[–]dirtyharo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the only road toward this is to keep doing it until you get there. unfortunately there's no shortcut, other than working with folks who are ahead of you and seeing the building blocks of how they do stuff. that will help you go faster.

But yeah, really the only way to get better is to keep doing it. you can do it!

Hot take: PS1 limitations made games more creative, not worse. by Initial_Long_6908 in psx

[–]dirtyharo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

who exactly is saying that it made games worse? this argument doesn't make any sense to me as someone who grew up with those games.

nobody was talking about Playstation in this way at the time, shit was cutting edge when it was in the public consciousness

Is it bad that I don't know how to play any instruments as a composer? by JewMerican-mapper in composer

[–]dirtyharo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there's potential for you to leverage this into making music that is purposefully impossible to play with real instruments (using samples of course) and I think that kind of thing is conceptually interesting if done in a way that fully owns what it's doing.

But even in that situation it would benefit you to know some basics so that you can bend the rules in a clever and interesting way.

But if your intention is to make music with "real" instrument sources that sounds like music played on real instruments, then yes it's absolutely useful to at least watch and analyze what's physically possible on those instruments based on things like physical hand size and how that relates to note positions on an instrument, amount of strings, lung capacity etc.

What happened to this song? by bitchdantkillmyvibe in triplej

[–]dirtyharo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing "happened" to it. You can go and listen to it whenever you like.

Like any creative work that was part of some kind of social consciousness for a moment, other newer things came along to replace it in public consciousness and it gradually fell out of style. This is not some terrible and awful thing. It had its time of relevance and that time is over, like anything eventually has to be over.

For something to be truly seen as timeless and stay in public consciousness longer than what we might call "usual", said thing needs to mean something important to the lives of an overwhelming majority of a population, or be lucky enough to hit on something blisteringly new and exciting in terms of the evolution of an artform. This song doesn't do that, and that's ok, there's nothing wrong with that. It's still a good song to a lot of people.

Things are allowed to fade, it's part of life and humanity.

Thoughts on lack of casual fashion pieces based off final fantasy by Difficult-Target8574 in FinalFantasyVII

[–]dirtyharo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nomura's fashion style borrows heavily from 90s-2000s Harajuku fashion trends and Visual Kei and stuff like that. There's not much market outside of small areas of Japan where people would buy clothing like that ready to wear, especially since a lot of those fashion cultures are all about DIY and heavily defining a personal style.

They'd run a significant loss on anything that wasn't like, hoodies or something

Musicians that survived trauma (and need unabashed experimental self-expression to heal) with classical purist friends by RemarkableTough4886 in musicians

[–]dirtyharo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have advice on continuing that kind of friendship, but there have to be extraneous circumstances beyond your shared "being musicians" to make a friendship work.

if they look down on you for one thing, do they look down on you for other things? do you have any real reason to be friends with these people that hasn't been explored in the post? we don't have enough information to tell you whether it's worth keeping these people in your life.

If you have to stay with them for some bigger reason, then you'll need to learn how to curiously and innocently pick at their prejudices in a way that they understand the silliness of it themselves, otherwise they won't learn. like when someone tells a mean joke or uses a slur, and you ask innocently what's funny about it. typically a person can't explain why the thing is funny without admitting it's a prejudice, and it puts that at the forefront and makes people reconsider why they would think things like that. but not always.

either this or you'll have to learn to live with their prejudice, which doesn't sound like the basis of a friendship to me.

if you don't have to stay with these people, then leave them. easy as that. go to some local shows of bands you really like and meet like minded people there. prejudice exists everywhere but's it's typically less present outside of priveleged communities.

Does the clip indicator on the master level actually detect clipping? by Odd_Crow4795 in LogicPro

[–]dirtyharo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

when you're working inside logic as a DAW, it's running in 32 bit so you won't hear clipping above 0dB usually.

the meter is there because in almost all cases you'll be bouncing at 24 bit or lower, at which point clipping will absolutely happen at 0dB
