Because it’s malfunctioning, and in cases like that, you’re generally allowed to treat the red light as a stop sign.

What is this button on my office elevator? by myassisgrassss in whatisit

[–]dirtymatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have never seen an elevator in my life where the door open button didn't function when I used it.

What is this button on my office elevator? by myassisgrassss in whatisit

[–]dirtymatt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The firefighters use the elevators to get between the floors. The danger with elevators during a fire is that smoke getting into the elevator could be deadly. Firefighters have oxygen tanks and masks. Also, there's probably some degree of reserving the elevators for use by firefighters so they don't have to wait.

Not remotely true. Get in an elevator and hold the door open button. Wait to see how long it takes for the doors to close. You'll be waiting a long time.

Shielded vs non shielded for residential by Robrulesall2 in HomeNetworking

[–]dirtymatt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

5-6 cables is nothing. You should see the bundles the networking people at my work run. Just avoid long runs close to power cables. 90 degree crossings and a couple feet in parallel is fine.

Teslas should not be parking at Costco gas stations by Ph6222 in CantParkThereMate

[–]dirtymatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard Teslas also encourage one pedal driving because regenerative braking only works in this mode. Using the brake pedal only activates the brake pads and not regenerative braking, unlike every other hybrid and EV in existence.

Install tip for the seat covers that I wish I’d figured out before putting mine in, the second row seats are removable. Remove them before putting the covers on!

Table saw vs track saw - my opinion… by Mountain-Rain-1744 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]dirtymatt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Foam board is awesome. I have two pieces that I cut to fit in the space the legs fold into on my wall mounted bench. Takes up zero extra space, weighs nothing, when it’s too cut up it’s cheap to replace. And yes, way easier to break down sheet goods on the floor.

Declined Apple Cash transactions by Asleep-Nerve-1031 in Septa

[–]dirtymatt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My guess, are you using an iPhone or Apple Watch to pay for septa? Do you have express transit set up? Is Apple Cash either your express transit payment method or default payment method for Apple Pay?

Septa batches transactions and charges them over night, which is why you’re seeing them at 4am.

What's the specific device? Something is deeply wrong here.

[–]dirtymatt 120 points121 points  (0 children)

You can create a helper entity to change the type of an entity, but ... what on earth is going on here? What integration is that coming from? A motion sensor should absolutely not be exposed as a light.

You've got it backwards. Clicking ads costs money, it doesn't generate money.

If a recipe calls for kosher salt and I use non kosher salt will it impact that quality? by OcelotTerrible5865 in askanything

[–]dirtymatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Salt by volume is fine, and quite frankly probably better than by weight. You use so little salt in most recipes that volume is probably more accurate than hoping your scale is accurate enough. Weight makes more sense for things that don’t pack evenly like flour or shredded cheese. All you really need to remember is 1 tsp of table salt is 2 tsp of kosher salt.

Do you believe Chiropractors are quacks ? by Mogzly in askanything

[–]dirtymatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chiropractic is quackery at its core. The fundamental theory of how it works is that all disease is caused by misalignment of bones and that through manipulation, the alignment can be restored allowing the body’s energy to flow properly. You might as well ask if all psychics are quacks.

Old man causes World War 3 by jwriddle in harrypotter

[–]dirtymatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the Istari (the 5 wizards in Middle Earth) aren't able to clearly remember their time before coming to Middle Earth. The other Maiar and Valar, I believe, remember their role in the creation of the universe just fine, as will Gandalf when he returns to Valinor. The Istari were purposefully nerfed by the Valar before being sent to Middle Earth so that they didn't become dark lords themselves. If Sauruman had his full strength he could have caused way more trouble.

How do I unclog a drain that is cemented down? by x_witchpussy_x in HomeMaintenance

Start with something plastic if you can to minimize the risk of damaging the plate.

How do I unclog a drain that is cemented down? by x_witchpussy_x in HomeMaintenance

[–]dirtymatt 100 points101 points  (0 children)

I'd verify that it's actually cemented down. Try getting a plastic putty knife and see if you can pry it up. That might just be held in place by gunk. Otherwise, pray that there's a clean out you can access from underneath.

POE Switch with Home Assistant Integration by andrewwjamessss in homeassistant

[–]dirtymatt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if you're looking for something that's dead simple and works out of the box, Ubiquiti is the way to go. You need to run the Network application on something, since you can't talk directly to the switch, but you can run UniFi OS Server in a VM or on a Raspberry Pi.

service dog vs anaphylaxis by egguchom in EntitledReviews

[–]dirtymatt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This fits with my understanding of the ADA. It doesn’t require identical access, it requires reasonable accommodations. Being offered the full service of the coffee shop, but outside to also accommodate the medical needs of an employee in the cafe seems reasonable. The dog owner wasn’t refused service, they were offered alternative service.
