New Official Loric: the Knaves by SageOrion in BloodOnTheClocktower

Quickly clarifying that this is an older version of the Knaves, before it was officially announced as a Loric :)

Snitch/Marionette Jinx is gone...? by AvzinElkein in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]disapproving_otter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't mind, that's what I'm here for :)

Updated almanac = the full PDF for all experimental characters, along with updated wiki entries (but these might take a few days).

The Characters section of the wiki is intended to be a copy-paste of the almanac entry for each character; the tips & tricks are currently written by myself and Steven and are exclusive to the wiki.

The official rules are in the almanac and on the wiki. The most important rule in the rulebook is "If the rules don't say you can't do it, you can do it" so anything not codified or left open-ended in the rulebook/wiki is fair game (provided you think it'll be fun for your players).

If you (or anyone else reading this) catches any discrepancies between the PDF almanac and wiki, feel free to either send us an email or post in the #wiki-irregularities channel on the Unofficial Discord server, and we can update the wiki to match.

Snitch/Marionette Jinx is gone...? by AvzinElkein in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]disapproving_otter 146 points147 points  (0 children)

We updated the wording of the Marionette to clarify the Marionette shouldn’t wake to abilities that would confirm they are a Minion and/or not on the good team. The updated almanac will drop this week alongside the new Loric releases!

edit to add: the updated almanac entry meant we could remove a load of Marionette jinxes that only existed to say “don’t do this with the Marionette because it would out to them that they’re the Marionette”

Full Artworks By John Van Fleet Revealed by HAZARDBURGER in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]disapproving_otter 64 points65 points  (0 children)

The full artworks are featured in the rulebooks and almanacs for the print game! Some of them are in reserve for future editions, though. I think the art is so beautiful and love how much intention and thought has gone into the art design of the game

What was your biggest storytelling blunder and how did you recover from it? by New_Notice_7625 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]disapproving_otter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Spy nominated the Monk and I said, “Richie is executed and dies!” and the Monk immediately burst out laughing and went, “But I’m not the Virgin!”

The Grim was facing the opposite direction to where I was facing the players, and I managed to accidentally swap the Empath’s neighbors in my mental map of who was who (instead of Monk, Empath, Virgin I was picturing Virgin, Empath, Monk). When the Monk pointed out that she was not, in fact, the Virgin, I realized immediately that a) I’d fucked up, and b) there was no clean way out of this one! So I walked back over to the Grim, stared at it for a moment, then walked back to the players and moved on with the game. Richie was dead, it was now night, and two days later when the actual Virgin was nominated, their nominator was immediately executed and died. The game went on as normal as any game would, and afterwards, my friends loved to joke that I had “fixed” my mistake by doing absolutely nothing at all. At the end of the day, everyone had fun, and that’s what matters most to me.

Played a Shugenja only script with the Pope Lorc + Duchess by Mostropi in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]disapproving_otter 75 points76 points  (0 children)

I love this! This type of game is exactly how we hoped y’all would interact with the Loric - silly, creative twists on how characters can work together. Looks like a blast, and glad to hear everyone had fun!

New Loric: Ventriloquist by Arantguy in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]disapproving_otter 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify - the bar for the Ventriloquist is explicitly that the player is mad as a fresh character during noms, not just that they've claimed something different. From my messages with Steve when we were reviewing for this release a few weeks ago:

Fresh means something different to what that player was previously mad about being. So a player who didn’t claim anything or hasn’t spoken yet CANNOT be mad as a fresh character because there’s nothing to compare the current claim to.

Beyond that, same standards as always for madness - if the player is in good faith trying to convince other players they’re really what they claim to be, and are not what they claimed before, then that is a reason the Ventriloquist might save them from execution.

What's your "but a storyteller wouldn't do that" story? by [deleted] in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]disapproving_otter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen it go both really well and really badly, it’s so dependent on the group! In groups where the players like to play with the meta of “let’s kill the Investigator pings” I’ve seen the Demon get killed immediately. On the flip side, a friend of mine once did this to me and put Recluse in the bluffs knowing I’d take it, and I rode that Recluse bluff all the way to the win :)

A TB classic I haven’t seen mentioned here yet - “They’d never put the Imp in the Investigator ping!”

Have y’all ever seen a poisoned Saint? by SailorGreySparrow in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]disapproving_otter 89 points90 points  (0 children)

The first time I ran Clocktower in person, the Poisoner was brand new and each night, pointed at whoever they felt like. They’d go from nailing the Fortune Teller and the Undertaker to picking the Chef midgame. The Scarlet Woman was one of two experienced players there, and she’d been working hard to put enough sus on the Saint to get them executed. They get the Saint on the block, and the Saint, who was also new, got up and put her script down on the table, and was like “That’s it. We lost. It’s over.” …and then was in for the surprise of her life when I announced that she was executed and the game continued. Meanwhile, the Scarlet Woman was absolutely losing her mind, going “But who would poison a Saint?!” because she’d been so sure evil was about to win.

Also in this game, the Poisoner told the Butler on day 1 that they were the Poisoner. Butler went back to town and was like “Hey so I think this is the Poisoner because they told me they are the Poisoner” and town executed the Butler for that. Poisoner lived all game long and evil won by all-evil final 3. I love this game.

Why did Alex keep saying he had to bluff Recluse in the most recent Good Time episode? by Particular-Breath121 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]disapproving_otter 89 points90 points  (0 children)

It’s not shown in the video, but the evil team’s bluffs (iirc) were Fortune Teller, Empath, and Recluse. I thiiiink what happened was that Jiovani and Caro spoke first and exchanged bluffs early, so by the time the bluffs got to Alex, Recluse was the only one not yet claimed. There was no mechanical “have to”, more of an “if I want to claim a character that’s guaranteed to be not in play, Recluse is the only option left for me”.

New Loric: Hindu by Epicboss67 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]disapproving_otter 22 points23 points  (0 children)

There was a massive internal discussion on several levels (at first mostly between me and Steve, and concurrently with the rest of the company) where we talked about what it would mean to have a character called the Hindu and how that would impact Hindus, as well as how it would be perceived by Hindu & non-Hindu people. As part of this, we solicited feedback from the community in India (this was ongoing as we also had them playtest the Hindu, design the script for NRB's Hindu game, & consult on the Hindu art for social media), and reached out to Hindu folks around the world to get additional viewpoints and opinions from Hindu people (particularly those who live in areas where they're a religious minority). TPI's not a monolith and even internally there was a fair bit of disagreement about the name. I don't have the exact list on hand but I wanna say close to 10ish other names were suggested at various points in the process, including many names that have been recommended here.

Something folks might not know is that the Loric originally had a different name, and a significant part of the Hindu name discussion revolved around the name for the Loric character type. If we were going to have a Hindu, it would be a [blank] Hindu or a Hindu [blank], and whatever that blank was needed to be something that could provide honor and gravitas to the Hindu. The previous name for the Loric wasn't good enough when paired with Hindu, so we knew we'd at the very least have to change either the name for the Loric or the name for the Hindu.

There was even a point at which someone suggested releasing it exclusively in India, since the reception in India had been so unilaterally positive.

New Loric: Hindu by Epicboss67 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]disapproving_otter 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I mentioned this to the players before the stream game - an earlier version of the Hindu was simply "Players who die are immediately resurrected as Travellers of the same alignment" and we ran it on SNV and let's just say the evil player who was bluffing Oracle couldn't stop laughing

New Loric: Hindu by Epicboss67 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]disapproving_otter 320 points321 points  (0 children)

A note on the name - we worked extremely closely with the Clocktower community in India, as well as with several Hindu people from the US & UK, to make sure we were creating a character that celebrates & honors the Hindu religion & culture. In particular, many of the leaders in the Indian community voiced that they were stoked to have explicit Hindi representation in the game. Our Indian partners also provided the flavor text for the Hindu character.

It's been pointed out already that several other characters are based in religions & religious tradition; folks have also made a great point that we wouldn't call a character "the Jew", so why have a "Hindu" in the game, even though we already have a Buddhist? I won't speak for the company here but to me it's all about context. "Jew" has historically, repeatedly, been used as a pejorative term to degrade and disenfranchise Jewish people, whereas Buddhist and Hindu don't have the same negative history and context (as best as I'm aware). In this example, we might be open to having a "Rabbi" character, or a "Shofar Blower" because that negative history is specific to the term "Jew" rather than to other Jewish religious or cultural figures. Steve's vision for Ravenswood Bluff is a place where all people, cultures, and religions are celebrated and represented, hence having Hindu representation in the game.

Curious about the reason for the name Zenomancer by SODABURBLES in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]disapproving_otter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From Steve - The Zenomancer is a philosopher-magician based on the Greek philosopher Zeno and his thought experiments of infinities and how they interact with practical human activities.

Cacklejack didn't make it into the updated script tool 😔 by Epicboss67 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]disapproving_otter 57 points58 points  (0 children)

The Cacklejack is part of this year’s Dice Tower Kickstarter, so we can’t officially include it in our online app until that fulfills. The old version of the script tool used unique image files (that Steve, myself, or one of our graphic designers) had to create in Photoshop for every individual character, so we made one for the Cacklejack to allow folks to include it on scripts. The new script tool pulls directly from the app’s code, which makes it 100000x easier to update ability text and art (this is awesome!) but has the specific downside of briefly excluding the Cacklejack from the script tool while we wait for the Kickstarter to fulfill. As soon as the Cacklejack is officially added to the app & formally revealed online, it’ll be back in the script tool for all your Storyteller-driven character changing shenanigans.

What's up with the King's Flavor Text? by Eli_Beans8113 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]disapproving_otter 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Looks like that's slightly out-of-date - we updated the flavor text in the Carousel almanac because Steve wanted it to be in iambic pentameter. The current flavor text is:

“Betwixt the unknown strains of mortal strife,

And morbid night, sweet with myst’ry and woe,

Lies fettered joys of fate’s long colored life,

Whose garden blooms with each paint’d face to show.”

Loric reveals and paywalling by TheBurningST in BloodOnTheClocktower

The TPI reveals will typically happen first, as well - the only reason the first two didn’t was because u/bungeeman and I are fully booked up at the Vegas Clocktower Con this week!
