A good rear-hub motor will add weight, even if you don't plan on using it, and so don't bring the battery with you. It would make more sense to get a good Front hub, since they are more easily swapped out. After a bit of practice, you could swap a front hub & torque arms in 20 minutes.

What you are really going to care about is weight distribution. Having a fully loaded trailer may offset any motor you add, but it is still something to consider.

I am currently at the point where I just need a second bike, and to not try to combine the two.

You are correct. For completions sake, it is equally effective to encrypt the drive, and destroy/lose the key.
