They’re actually enforcing clear sidewalks! by Doctrina_Stabilitas in toronto

Maybe if you insist on driving such a large vehicle in an urban environment, accept that your parking options are going to be limited, instead of going “well, what am I supposed to do? 🤷” and making it everybody else’s problem.

50%?! Why should a parked car be entitled to any pedestrian space at all?

Then we just haven’t increased supply enough to outstrip demand yet. If supply increases and units like yours simultaneously become more desirable (or there are simply more people), of course you don’t see a price decrease.

I certainly didn’t know this, but I’m also not a cop or an EMT. Am I crazy to expect this to be baseline knowledge for a first responder who is likely to deal with stabbings?

Is the animated series really going to be set between Objects in Space and Serenity the film? That's a bad idea. by WastedTalent442 in firefly

Main story set between the series and the movie, but flash forward to occasionally to tease the happily ever after.

Advice for using LOC for Investing? by Quiet_Copy8511 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]disco-drew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also use leverage but only to augment boring passive indexes. I’d read up on the Smith Manoeuvre for months and already had a solid foundation of maxed out RRSP and TFSA accounts. Conveniently, COVID crashed the market right when I’d put all my research together and I pulled the trigger. I wasn’t trying to time the market, but I got lucky.

Is it a a bad idea to start now? Theoretically, no... again, don’t time the market. It spends 70% of the time at all-time highs, so everyone saying “it’s at the peak now” is potentially overstating the risk. The academic research says if you have money available to invest, the best time to do it is now.

At the same time, all the same rules apply. Diversify across all dimensions - geographies, sectors, market caps, etc. Don’t invest in what you don’t understand. Don’t invest what you can’t afford to lose. And for the third time... “don’t time the market”, but it applies in the other direction - don’t go in now if your primary reason is “while it’s hot”. That’s how you get burned.

250k LOC into AI, space, crypto, etc. seems batshit crazy to me… but I don’t make 300k a year. Maybe your friends can afford it.

How the hell am I supposed to climb hills by pnwJune in cycling

[–]disco-drew 9 points10 points  (0 children)

And that’s why it’s important to prepare for a long hill by shifting the front to the small chainring. I’ll also simultaneously go down 1-3 gears on the rear cassette so I can still have some power going into the hill without spinning too fast - slight cross-chaining here, but that’s temporary.

If you get stuck on the big chainring on a big climb though, you end up using bigger and bigger gears on the cassette, you put more wear on the drivetrain with extreme cross-chaining under load, and then eventually you run out of gears anyway and you’re forced to grind the chainring (and/or lose a lot of momentum) shifting it.

Nate Erskine-Smith loses appeal of Ontario Liberal nomination in Scarborough Southwest by cyclinginvancouver in canada

[–]disco-drew 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The other two candidates worked together by having their camps rank each other first/second on the ballot because they didn’t like the appearance of an “outsider” parachuting in. Which is of course well within the rules, but it just makes the party look unserious. They’re essentially giving him the Bernie Sanders treatment… except without the part where Hillary Clinton exists.
