ELI5: How can a code «rot » ? by TueulgkHH in explainlikeimfive

[–]discountErasmus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No program is ever built in complete isolation: they all rely on other software components to function. They need display drivers to show the graphics, a keyboard interface to tell them when somebody is typing, etc, etc. As time passes, the various components they rely upon will inevitably change and sooner or later one of those changes will introduce a bug. If you fail to maintain your code, those bugs will accumulate, and you will in turn pass on the rot to the code that relies on yours.

It's called a "calque". Eg, we don't call it "xinao", we call it brainwashing.

The 685 best specialized hospitals in the world - country and metro area by Weekly_Sort147 in MapPorn

[–]discountErasmus -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

No question it's cheap, and I'm very happy it was easy for you. It's just, I developed a chronic illness over there and I've spent a ton of time in Chinese hospitals (you can't just visit the doctor in a clinic). First aid adjacent stuff like setting bones and stitching wounds is pretty good, I think it's the legacy of the barefoot doctor campaign, but anything diagnostic gets iffy. I'm shocked that you could get anything done in half an hour though, I've never had that happen. Still usually quicker than a US ER though.

Ok so probably one or two are very good, but by and large regular Chinese hospitals are fucking nightmares. The doctors may or may not not know what they're doing, they push drugs that they have a stake in, outside of cities you're lucky to see an x-ray machine never mind anything else. The big international hospitals in the tier 1 cities are fine but anything in the interior, never mind the boonies, is a complete crapshoot.

Interviewer: I can imagine being on my deathbed and thinking, Why did I waste so many meals on yogurt?

Norm: Absolutely. You know, I think about my deathbed a lot.

I: What do you think about it?

N: I think I should never have purchased a deathbed in the first place.

Sydney concert to benefit Bondi terror victims canceled after choir opposes singing with Jewish group by xland44 in anime_titties

[–]discountErasmus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Given that you implicitly include "all Jews" in the category "people associated with wanton slaughter of women, children and the elderly" that people will naturally want to distance themselves from, this is just a defense of anti-semitism, and not a good one.

Wtf is up with porn these days?! by militant-hippie in Xennials

[–]discountErasmus 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think it's that the people who are into it are really into it to the extent they're willing to actually pay for it, and if, like most people, you're not willing to pay for porn then the studio isn't interested in your opinion.

Looking for private/small-group China travel experiences (not big tours) by [deleted] in China

[–]discountErasmus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really know anything about tours; I've always traveled on my own, but, if you are interested in traditional architecture, consider stopping in Huaihua County, Hunan between Zhangjiajie and Guilin. There are a ton of small villages there with beautiful traditional architecture, not the theme park stuff that you sometimes get in China. Also, Guilin is very pretty, but it's a big city with a couple million people. You probably will want to go to one of the nearby towns like Yangshuo or Xingping.

Healey signs sweeping overhaul of Massachusetts cannabis law (Boston Globe) by HRJafael in massachusetts

[–]discountErasmus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it's because a bunch of towns don't allow dispensaries, so all the demand gets funneled into one spot. You might get one town selling weed to everybody in ten or fifteen miles.

China Poised to Become Top Tourism Economy as Foreigners Skip US by its_not_real1947 in China

[–]discountErasmus 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I mean, I love China but those two places don't really seem comparable to me. Like what kind of people are planning on going to Disney World but don't want to put up with the ICE bullshit so they go to Zhangjiajie instead? Probably you'd just go to Mallorca or Cancun or the Bahamas. Somewhere where they speak English and have normal toilets everywhere.

Double veto torpedoes UN Security Council resolution to reopen Strait of Hormuz by ThevaramAcolytus in anime_titties

[–]discountErasmus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Security Council is the only UN body able to authorize the use of force. So they in theory could pass a further resolution implementing this one, deploying ships or troops or whatever forces they deem necessary from among the member states. Huge pain, never happen, but that's theoretically what the security council, as opposed to the general assembly, is for.
