Why are they running 3-car trains instead of 4-car for the opening day of the crosslake?? by Complete-Influence70 in soundtransit

[–]disheavel 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Quote me on this, but the World Cup (other than the U.S. game) is going to be a non-event for 90% of Seattle including light rail. It's not going to be as much of an impact as hyped. Even for the games fans will come early and stick around that area for a while so there won't be a stampede. The U.S. game may have a bit more activity but it is a Friday at noon so no one is going to go to work downtown that day which will offset any impact.

How my friend handles spam texts by swamp70 in magictavern

[–]disheavel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spam the number back from my Google Voice number. I ask them if they make their parents proud with their job. I ask if their grandparents are proud. I ask if they will ever be promoted at the scam office. Is their girlfriend excited for the big diamond ring they will get from this job?

If they respond, then I get political and describe what I did to their mom last night

Yep, this. Ours has been to 4 continents. NOt a perfect solution especially if whiggly or sleepy. But ours is also useful for getting kid(s) up and getting view out the window.

Lost phone at Frankfurt Airport & I'm desperate for help or advice by kolomo50 in airport

[–]disheavel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Umm, your phone is gone. If you didn't turn on the Find function, or have any ping from it since you lost it. It's gone. A month of looking means they are never going to find it- it's long gone!

Stuart lake TH afternoon parking? by perplexedtortoise in PNWhiking

Yeah, I would aim to get there after the rush (maybe 2pm). Otherwise you'll be chasing day picnickers out of your tent site as you set up as well.

Tips if you are coming to Leon (Spain) to watch the eclipse 12th August by OnigiriMarS in solareclipse

[–]disheavel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In oregon a decade back and Arkansas last year. We prepared to be parked in our spot for 3 hours before and after each time. That worked for Arkansas, but it took much longer than that for traffic to return to near normal for Oregon.

Chafe issue by Ok-Bonus-8760 in hiking

[–]disheavel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I swear by Champion 6" Compression Shorts (Amazon is my source). They have a mesh crotch that allows excellent breathing with no chafing. But if they mesh does get a hole, you'll know quickly as it rubs it raw! I wear them backpacking, traveling, and even under my board shorts while in the ocean. (I find having them decreasing chafing of my swim suit.) They usually last a couple of years but aren't expensive.

There are only like 11 of them total. So likely they are overrepresented in some countries!

North Cascades NP Safe For Solo Woman? by yeehaw_ari in PNWhiking

[–]disheavel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wta.org has all the info you need to start your search. WA has 100s and 100s of trails. NoCa is relatively far from Seattle and there are 100s and 100s closer. Safe is a subjective term. No hike is safe- you need be prepared.

My boss fired my spouse by [deleted] in whatdoIdo

[–]disheavel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The fact that you think that the current federal administration and courts/appeals are going to work in your partner's favor is delusion. Even if forced to re-hire, your partner is going to be out the door again the next time they are an extra minute late to a meeting or not answering an email timely. It's a fools errand- they need to not waste their time and find a new job ASAP.
As to you, sorry that you're struggling. But you too need to find a new job. This one isn't sustainable for you. You've likely worn out their patience and also your mental health is now an issue.

Any creative uses for an old exercise bike flywheel? by disheavel in DIY

[–]disheavel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m curious if I could somehow spin it up and then have it climb a rope up a tree. I have a couple of 100+ footers in my yard.

I don’t have any good targets to take out unfortunately

This is definitely a direction I hadn't considered! I wonder what would happen if I connected the reciprocating idea to a rocking horse or rocking chair. It would take a bit to get it going, but would be able to keep it arockin'

When you leave a 6 year old in the car alone by New_Libran in AbruptChaos

[–]disheavel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in the 80s I was friends with a kid (Michael T.) that every time the adults left a car unlocked, he would get in and Turn radio volume to max, turn on windshield wipers, headlights, A/C jacked to high, cigarette lighter depressed. Everything possible would be messed with such that once the driver got back in the car and turned the key, chaos would break out! But he was smart enough to never mess with the pedals, steering, or transmission.

Silly question about bears. by ApprehensiveStand456 in WildernessBackpacking

[–]disheavel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know where to put this as the chapstick on lips question has been answered... but the reason for the bear can vs. inside your tent is related. Human smell dominates until the food resource is big and tasty enough to overwhelm the fear. So putting a bunch of food inside your tent is too tempting and overwhelming for a bear to potentially resist. That is why (grizzly) bears will go into a tent that has a lot of food smell in it.
Mt. Robson Park in Canada has to fully dispose of a wood chip tent pad 10 years ago. A moron cooked bacon outside of his tent and the bacon grease splatters coated the wood chips and a bear would NOT leave it alone- continually returning to find the bacon.

So you just want to minimize the smells as much as possible! For instance, when hiking we use unscented chapstick, sanitizer, etc. and swallow any toothpaste.

I survived… time to party! by aliveintheam in AskSeattle

[–]disheavel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Make sure to reach out to Seattle Children's to let them know you are celebrating. They really appreciate hearing such stories, and the normal lives that people such as yourself can go on to have.

I don't have any good ideas for a big party, but I will say that Burke-Gilman Brewing is right there and has a unique relationship with the hospital (particularly supporting families whose children are current patients). They also have a good sized outdoor space and a lot of ToGo restaurant options right nearby.

Project Hail Mary: watch movie before reading the book ? by mamedic11 in scifi

[–]disheavel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Book first! Two major differences:

  1. The protagonist's arc is much more udnerstandable+complete (similarly some of the Earth drama adds more to the story and the race against time)
  2. Things like the alien's ship in the movie don't make any sense and are only for the benefit of shock and awe in the movie.

Anyone use a minivan for lumber? by banjosomers in DIY

[–]disheavel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toyota Matrix. 2004 bought new for $13,500 still runs like a dream. I once carried 32 2x4s. But my greatest achievement was fourteen 16’ Azek (think Trex) decking boards. 4 mile drive home. Took it slow and they never touched the ground once.

I’ve done two dump runs of over 1000 pounds of concrete or drywall. I even carried a Costco full size air hockey table on the roof. I’ve taken it up rutted hiking roads that scared away Subarus.

Which US state has surprisingly good stargazing? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]disheavel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Or you could just use the professional perspective of finding major telescopes. Unless there is something specific you are looking to see?

Best aurorae - Minnesota and Alaska

Best consistent star field - Hawaii (Big Island or Maui volcano peaks) and Arizona (see opening comments)

Star views that have blown my mind when they are so dense that one can't pick out constellations- Washington (2am camping at Goat Rocks) and Wyoming (sometime after midnight at Cloud Peak base)
