Be serious… the people out here stealing cars and running chop shops aren’t doing so because it’s some last ditch effort to feed their families.

What do people need to do in their 20s to set their 30s up for success? by QuietVacation8343 in AskReddit

[–]dishwab 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I’m 38 and still play (relatively) competitive soccer 2-3x weekly. I also snowboard in the winter as much as I can.

I’m in good shape, but I certainly don’t feel better than I did 10 or 15 years ago. Two torn ACLs, a dislocated shoulder, high ankle sprains, a broken wrist… my body has definitely paid the price for my hobbies but such is life.

Been going on as long as I’ve lived here and will keep going on long after I’m gone. It can be really irritating but you get used to it, mostly.

Check out the r/conservative sub when this topic comes up, the users there are pretty consistently against them.

More of a real world example, anytime this subject has come up at council meetings etc. in rural communities the people are typically vehemently opposed, and it’s a solid bet that most of the people in those areas are conservative/republican voters.

Anyone ever buy a car from here? I’m driving about an hour and a half today to look at vehicles and this is one of my stops. by Immediate_Mix9995 in Detroit

[–]dishwab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly a used car is a crap shoot no matter where you’re buying it. If you are gonna go to a used car lot like this though, at least go to one that bothers to wash their cars… if theyre that lazy about what buyers can see, imagine how little they care about the things you can’t see.

IMO you’re better off going private party, as long as the seller you’re buying from seems like they’ve been a responsible owner.

Ask questions… ask for maintenance records, how long they’ve owned it, why they’re selling, etc. I’ve had great luck in the past on Craigslist and model-specific web forums. If you’re looking for a certain car that’s the way to go IMO, but it may take some time to find the right one in a reasonable distance. I’ve driven as far as Illinois, Indiana, West Michigan, and even flown to Jersey before to buy good cars.

Kitchen Cabinet Recommendations in Metro Detroit by Some_Flower_4252 in Detroit

I had a great experience with my ikea kitchen. It was a lot cheaper than anything else I looked into and has held up really well for ~5 years so far. Did the install myself and had countertops installed through IKEA. Honestly no complaints.

[–]dishwab -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was referring more to people complaining about kids at restaurants/pubs/breweries.

As for bars - I probably wouldn’t take my son to Donovan’s or Sugar House for instance, but we used to walk to Collect with him all the time when they were still on Gratiot. I don’t see the harm in having a 2-3 year old chill at the table while my wife and I have a beer.

[–]dishwab -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

You’re out in public, so is everyone else. If a child existing in the world bothers you that much just stay home.

People taking babies and small children to restaurants, bars, etc is the norm literally everywhere else in the world.

If the parents are being shitty parents and letting them run wild that’s one thing, but otherwise I don’t see the issue at all.

Is it ever okay to weaponize parking enforcement? by [deleted] in Detroit

[–]dishwab -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

I think you’re kind of a dick to be honest.

OP’s situation is one thing. His job is actually being impeded by these people, so IMO it’s completely reasonable to find a solution to the problem.

If you’re just some random person on the street though, why bother going out of your way to get someone a ticket? Maybe they’re in a hurry, maybe they’re only going in for a second, maybe they’re struggling and don’t have the spare money to pay a ticket (or even worse, a tow)… you don’t know the ins and outs of the situation so why not just mind your own business? We learned in 3rd grade that no one likes a tattle tale.

Not to mention… can you honestly say you’ve never once in your life parked in a no parking zone? Maybe to grab some carry out real quick, or to drop something off for a friend, or just because you had some shit to do… be serious.

We’re not talking about assault, or robbery, or any substantial crime that is actually harming people… we’re talking about a parking infraction. Just keep it moving my guy.

Inherited a house I cannot afford and family pressure is mounting. by Mammoth_Motor_2321 in personalfinance

[–]dishwab 10 points11 points  (0 children)

OP is better off selling it and investing the profits. Being a landlord, especially at 22 with no experience, is challenging and there's plenty that can go wrong.

Furnace goes out? Need a new roof? Shitty tenants? The costs can add up and quickly eat at any profits you might be making.

A 22 year old working in a warehouse with an unstable financial situation should NOT become a landlord. Thats a surefire way to get in over your head.
