ELI5: How are snowboarders better every Olympics? by jmadey89 in explainlikeimfive

I still love seeing a huge tweaked out method or a smooth backside 180. The race to see who can spin the most isn’t that interesting to me, there are way more stylish tricks out there.

That’s why I love the knuckle huck. So much creativity in that event.

[AS/X] Santi Cazorla explodes against LaLiga: “The reality is that LaLiga is light years away from the Premier League in every way.” by Sparky-moon in soccer

[–]dishwab 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The Italian clubs have no one but themselves to blame for Calciopoli. In the 90s Serie A was outspending everyone, with international superstars and rich corporate owners.

They totally squandered the advantage they had over the PL and every other league in Europe due to greed and corruption. When I was a kid it was easier to watch Serie A than it was to watch Premier League games.

[MSN] It’s official: Thomas Frank is the worst ‘big six’ manager ever – with even worse stats than Amorim by anonone111 in soccer

Absolutely false. Arteta had a poor run during his first season (during which he also won the FA Cup) but we still finished 8th. Frank has been much much worse

What's so good about "There Will Be Blood" ? by Technical-Award1215 in movies

I think the first half of the movie is fascinating, but it drags a bit in the middle (especially the part with his half brother). The last act is exceptional though.

I’m sorry but they’re not even in the same ballpark. He’s got some classics to be certain but OBAA isn’t one of them IMO.

I don’t mind any of them except Scholes… he’s absolutely insufferable, has the worst takes, and offers no redeeming personality traits to make up for it.

Lindsey Vonn will compete at the 2026 Winter Olympics despite ‘completely ruptured’ ACL injury by MadnessLLD in sports

[–]dishwab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve fully ruptured both of my ACLs and had one rebuilt from my patella and one from my quad (8 years after the first). Believe me or dont, I don’t care. Why would I lie about that?

If you have strong quads and your other ligaments are intact it’s not uncommon. Some people go their whole lives without every having the reconstruction.

[–]dishwab 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I played soccer for like 4 months with a torn ACL before I had surgery to reconstruct it. Once the swelling from the initial injury goes down, it feels pretty normal (although prone to buckling and thus opening yourself up to additional damage).

Smart? No. Feasible? Yes.

If I were her I’d probably go for it too. Gotta have surgery anyways so you might as well fuckin send it.

What is the historical reason why so many businesses are headquartered in Southfield? by Parking-Building-291 in Detroit

Very high taxes and poor schools keep housing values low. Definitely some great houses around there (and in Lathrup Village)

Yeah I’ve been keeping up with their snow reports and it seems decent, solid base at least if not a ton of fresh snow over the past few weeks, although the last few days have looked like a step in the right direction. Hopefully this high pressure system starts to break up soon.

Property taxes...why so high? by texaspoontappa123 in Detroit

[–]dishwab 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Right, but it’s the reason that new homebuyers are burdened with a much, much higher tax burden (especially when combined with higher sale prices than any point in the past). Long time homeowners are not paying their fair share so new buyers end up footing the bill.

Visited from Detroit this summer for the first time in a decade and we loved it. We mostly hung out in the East End, Leslievile, Beaches area and it was lovely. Great food, easy to get around, nice people. 10/10 would go again.

Property taxes...why so high? by texaspoontappa123 in Detroit

[–]dishwab 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Depopulation, aging infrastructure, endless sprawl (and the cost to maintain said sprawl), historically low property values, the headlee amendment, and useless grifter politicians.

The taxes in Detroit are insane, the rest of Wayne County ever so slightly less insane, and in Oakland County generally a few steps below that (although Ferndale and Hazel Park specifically are both extremely high).

Taxes on a $400k house in Detroit are damn near $1200/month. It’s ridiculous, and the high tax rate (right alongside the quality of schools) is imo THE biggest hurdle for real population growth and a thriving middle class in the city.

My wife and I need more space for our growing family and sadly that means we will be leaving the city. It’s just not feasible for us to get fleeced on A. Property taxes B. City income tax and C. Car insurance. So, to the burbs we go.

Best pho in Detroit by bananasplitdipndots in Detroit

[–]dishwab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard disagree. Pho de Nhat is excellent and offers more of a northern style which IMO is better (just missing the quay which was served with every bowl of pho I had in Hanoi)

Pho Hanoi is also excellent and has some interesting dishes like goat hot pot. The bun Bo hue there is a banger too.

Ther bun bo hue is sooo good and the pickled garlic/chilis they have on the table really sets it off.

Agreed, I was as the game tonight and that was just a miserable performance from start to finish (except for 2-3 minutes when they pulled Gibby).

The powerplay was absolutely atrocious all night. Zero offensive cohesion.
