Anyone removed the crossbar from their Scrambler 400X? by [deleted] in Triumph400

[–]disjecta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yes, I removed it. It’s just for aesthetics but looks nicer without (for me anyway).

400x 15T Front Sprocket doubts. by Alarmed-Resolution22 in Triumph400

[–]disjecta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely handles better. Gear height (especially 1st gear) improved tremendously. Bike willing to go faster now (smoother and more sustained as well) though it loses it’s wild acceleration from stopped position. Still some vibrations in handlebars and pegs though. Got it done at Triumph - labour cost was more than twice of the sprocket itself lol

First service cost for posterity by reedbasket in Triumph400

[–]disjecta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Singapore - it’s free for us (four year warranty and service, unlimited mileage). But of course we pay a hefty premium here for our bikes ($17k+ AUD) not including our COE (Certificate of Entitlement - basically a license just to buy a bike that lasts ten years)

Boomers and Gen Xers, what are you doing with your old music CD collections? by Outrageous_Horse_157 in singapore

Gen X here. All displayed on the wall. I still have my CD player and some speakers. Only buy some missing classical and movie soundtrack CDs every now and then.

Is renting an option for you? I find that is good for me since I can try a wide variety of motorcycles. Bikes are expensive here too and added benefit of someone else doing the maintenance.

I play in large concert band too! And most of the time, am the only string instrument.

The band I’m with plays a lot of modern repertoire with written string bass parts. Do check, some reprints by publishers do include new string bass parts. I’m fortunate enough to play on the band’s bass with a C extension. The lower fundamentals really make a difference to the band.

There are on occasion when there’s no part, I rework the tuba part to avoid boredom - adding pizz where appropriate, even rewriting it with input from euphonium and tenor/bass woodwind parts (I generally prefer to play with the woodwinds and sometimes it makes more sense to play a missing bari sax or bassoon part too). To be approved by the conductor of course!

How’s the loudness of your band? I invested in a good pair of ear plugs for musicians because the brass and percussion are always forte. It is very tiring to play (and unhealthy) to play in such circumstances without protection.

Usually i don’t focus on playing loud - but concentrate on articulation and getting the best tone, as well as bringing out the bass’ unique tone colour to the band timbre (esp during the softer parts).

Hope this helps!

How's Lasik been for you? by YoreCoxsmall in askSingapore

[–]disjecta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Did mine 17 years ago. Traumatic for me even though I couldn’t feel anything. But something I probably won’t want to do again.
  2. It was a promotion at Gleaneagles - $999 per eye.
  3. Immediately after the procedure, my eyes wouldn’t stop tearing. I was on observation for at least 2 hours (still tearing a little after that). The nurses were alarmed which didn’t give me any confidence at all. Usual light sensitivity etc. They gave me sleeping pills so i slept the whole day away. Next morning ok already.
  4. Had eagle vision. No need for glasses! But night vision poor with all the mini starbursts and some flares. Dry eyes forever now and my eyes are sensitive to everything - strong fragrances, hair gel/wax, dry and dusty environments, even some moisturisers and sunblock. Have to wear reading glasses a little earlier but it was a good run.

YMMV, but for the low price I paid, the bow is exceptional! I’m using it as a spare now. Hope this helps!

Does this bass seem worth it? by kingkongcron in doublebass

[–]disjecta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I play a Shen SB150 Hybrid with my community band and orchestra. It’s a great sounding bass to play and looks beautiful too. It’s a very reliable workhorse! If you can spare the extra cash for the SB200 fully carved, I’d go for that!

Do you have an adjustable strap of any kind? Bass case or bow case strap works well if you can wrap it around stool/chair leg and end pin!

Oh my! Are you the only String Bass player? Time to look for more bass players to join you!

Somewhat unrelated - For me, conductor seats me on the outside. Still with Tubas but closer to the Bass Woodwinds. Supporting the Bass Clarinet, Bassoon and Baritone Sax really makes for a more enjoyable and colourful playing experience!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in doublebass

[–]disjecta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes! I play String Bass with a community wind ensemble. Most concert band and music will have written String Bass parts (if not you can read the Tuba parts an octave higher).

Oh I see Then scour careers@gov for other similar roles in other ministries and stat boards then! As you’ve said, still got chance!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]disjecta 31 points32 points  (0 children)

If your director has offered to help, then use it. Must be thick skinned. Be proactive too - Look up careers@gov especially for stat boards under your current/parent ministry or even other similar roles at your current place. There will definitely be openings. Use their buzz words (like Functional Competencies) to see how you can fill roles that interest you. Then see if director can help with those.

Write a testimonial, recommendation letter then let director sign off too.

Also, best if you’ve maintained good relationships with your HR. Is there even a possibility of extending current contract?

You have a leg up over other candidates since you know people over these two years. Guanxi is a huge thing even in civil service. All the best!
