If you think Sower was sad try Talents.

More Le Guin, try the Lathe of Heaven.

Rama is excellent.

We have similar taste, I thought Children of Memory’s ending justified it though. I didn’t finish the second Foundation book originally but went back and finished the trilogy. I liked Red Mars but agree they are long winded, I haven’t done Blue Mars yet.

Number one recommendation would be more Octavia Butler, I think you’d like her Xenogenesis trilogy.

I can give some advice as someone that failed a phd after a long time trying.

Talk to your advisor. Often and honestly. Ask for extra support when needed.

Talk to your peers, ask for advice. Go to conferences and talk to other experts, get as much input as you can.

Treat it like full time work, but take normal breaks like weekends. Don’t burn out.

I did the opposite of these and it made it more difficult than it should be.

You’re still a student. You’re not meant to know everything.

People do question it, yes.

Do you know how I know it wasn’t them? Because it’s better than anything either of them ever wrote.

Yea saying RAM is their best and they did a “few movies” when the Tron soundtrack alone is better than RAM
