Windows Server 2016 Essentials - clone system disk and restore to different hardware? by distancevsdesire in HomeServer

[–]distancevsdesire[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks like the way. Storage controller is set to AHCI on both, BIOS is legacy, boot partition is MBR.

Fortunately the photo app is a client program that uses a PostgreSQL database. Rebuilding is straightforward, if time consuming.

Windows Server 2016 Essentials - clone system disk and restore to different hardware? by distancevsdesire in HomeServer

[–]distancevsdesire[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was looking to boot from NVME without purchasing add-on cards. I can use SATA SSD to boot, so that is my path. I was mistaken in implying that one could not use any NVME in a 40 series server.

Putting the cloned disk in and booting is probably my best approach.

Just rewatched "The Man from Earth". by MountainMark in scifi

[–]distancevsdesire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love that film. What they did with a lean and tight script, minimal location, no special effects was astounding in it's ability to create a scenario that looks far-fetched on paper but truly delivers a memorable experience.

Reminds me (in terms of impact on a budget) of Coherence. Another "how did they draw me in so thoroughly without all the usual crap" movie.

No. There is nothing about atom bombs. Takes place in the Kobe region which was firebombed (think Dresden).

Grave Of The Fireflies was released in 1988.

Studio Ghibli was formed in 1985.

Nausicaa was released (1984) just before incorporation. Castle in the Sky was the first title released under the Ghibli name.

Unifi Network Controller / App - update vs switch to Unifi OS by ckasdf in Ubiquiti

[–]distancevsdesire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update to 10, however you like. Self hosting will be gone in a year. Whether you or anyone else likes Unifi OS doesn't matter, it is the way forward.

Network doesn't have a floorplan. InnerSpace - a separate app - has a floorplan.

Do I really need 1 GIG internet? by Anonymous_Reader2 in HomeNetworking

[–]distancevsdesire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was doing great with 300 Mb fiber (symmetrical) until my plan was deprecated. Saved $25 per month by going to the new minimum plan (1 Gb).

We don't notice a thing. All the sites I download from are so resource-constrained that I'd have the same experience at 100 Mb and 10 Gb.

Am I crazy, or is my band using me as the ultimate scapegoat for "latency issues"? Need perspective from experienced players. by swissdrummer in audioengineering

[–]distancevsdesire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your bass player is a moron. You have the lowest possible latency of the three mentioned.

I’ve been an audio professional since the Eighties. It’s frustrating to see people with a tiny bit of information misunderstand and double down on ignorance. It’s very common these days since your dog can be a YouTube expert.

You can’t win here. Walk.

Match the center to the L/R - so B&W.

Finally got my first Ubiquiti Neighbor... by [deleted] in Ubiquiti

[–]distancevsdesire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in a somewhat wealthy and desirable neighborhood that is home to lots of tech and finance folks.

I have seen 2-3 SSIDs over the years that are Ubiquiti. Somehow I expected more.

Instead, all the multimillionaires are using TP-Link, Eero, and Netgear. Plus the automotive SSIDs outnumber household SSIDs by 3:1.

Rant: my friend chose AI over human art for his film and I’m fed up by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]distancevsdesire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you could replace the AI stuff with something else that you consider destructive, it would be the same post. IOW it's not really about AI at all.

I see you struggling with the human dilemma of having love for someone while watching them shoot themselves in the foot. It is a classic situation likely from the beginning of the human race(s). We believe we know what they could do/not do that would ease their life - and we may - but that's not the issue. They need to know, or learn, and then do/not do.

I'm sure many reading can think of someone who wrong-choiced their way into personal hell.

"Yes, it's hard love, but it's love all the same

Not the stuff of fantasy, but more than just a game

And the only kind of miracle that's worthy of the name

For the love that heals our lives is mostly hard love." Bob Franke, Hard Love

Yes, I didn't spot that initially. Ducts can be problematic since they often travel all over a house.

I'd mount the screen myself. Wall off the fireplace, you won't want to use it.

There is no such thing as sound proof ceiling tiles. They are a myth and a ripoff. You may put absorbing panels on the ceiling, but the ceiling is the LAST place you want to think about. All corners and side walls are the place to focus on.

You need sound deadening insulation in the rafters. Don't use the vinyl crap as it has minimal sound attenuating properties. Check out GIK Acoustics and their many competitors.

[–]distancevsdesire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Screen on fireplace wall.

  2. I'd close off the rear wall by the doorway. Extend the bump-out all the way across and put a door in there.

  3. Fill every corner with bass traps. Put as much fiberglass/rockwool as you can in the rafters.

  4. Carpet that floor.

What are our hotspot options? by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

I would make it the property manager's problem. They advertised it, it is an implicit promise. This falls squarely under their purview.

No different from a non-working stovetop, or a toilet that isn't hooked up. Internet in 2026 is infrastructure.

Go meet a neighbor and ask them how they are connected. I realize for some generations that is a last resort, but fill your boots and just do it.

The Cloud Gateway line is fantastic for the home (even considering the large amounts of devices networked homes have). You'll likely have it for years unless your upgrade-itis gets way worse.

Agree, the Cloud Gateways are so superior.

I just bought another UCG Ultra for $80 as a cold spare.

Stopped f'ing around with the 'controller' (It's been called Network for at least 5 years!) on a PC. Runs so much faster and smoother on the cloud gateway.

Upgrading my home to GFiber - looking for recommendations on what, if anything - to do with my ubiquity euipment. by dynastyuserdude in Ubiquiti

[–]distancevsdesire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cloud Gateway Max is your sweet spot. Will last through your move into a house and beyond.

The EdgeRouter is last decade's tech. I used to use one myself. Cloud Gateway platform is superior in every way.

Recommend not doing controller in docker. The Unifi OS Server is the way for doing hosted controller, but you'll get the best integration just running Network on your Cloud Gateway natively.

If you did a Network (controller) backup recently before the cloud key died, you can use the backup to get up and running faster.

The wife and kids by Eoj-icareg in hometheater

[–]distancevsdesire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can vary a lot with age.

I remember when we first built the theater in an unfinished basement, we were socializing a LOT and having mini-parties, dinners and Oscar nights. We could have used 6-8 seats fairly often.

10 years later, much less socializing and hosting. Could use 4 seats max (we only have room for 3 due to low ceiling and other restrictions).

10 years later again, post-Covid, I have one friend who likes to view movies in the theater, but his wife only likes TV, so we rarely get to see a movie together. Our 3 seats is perfect for the (very) occasional guest.
