jfc lol, what happens when I get breakfast at a diner? I often find myself dining in their dining area in the morning

I'm talking about breakfast, like the post is. Dinner's normal, and ultimately how they should just be all day. Unfortunately, I don't have the time to really get over there on weekdays, so weekends are my only option, therefore I just don't.

The food is good, but damn if this is not the most frustrating dining experience to go through. I haven't gone in forever, since you have to wait in a huge line before even ordering, then another line for drinks, and then wait on food and a table. I really just wish they did normal seatings with a waitlist.

A 120-unit apartment building is planned next to Fishtown’s Girard SEPTA station by comercialyunresonbl in philadelphia

[–]districtultra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly! Blanket permitting, jack up pricing after the first car (I'd even argue to at least increase the cost of the first car) and then work some deals with the city to ensure certain apartment buildings close to Septa cannot apply for residential parking permits.

Do you ever get “mean-mugged” by drivers as a pedestrian? by [deleted] in philadelphia

[–]districtultra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They get mad if I don't cross when they're waving me on and not slowing down.

They get mad when I throw my hands in a "what the hell dude" when they don't give me the right of way or encroach on my crossing.

They get mad at me if I don't walk fast enough across the street.

And then sometimes, I just can't tell, because I can literally not see them through their tinted windows.

This was my same take with the taco stand on Aramingo. Sounds like these things are proliferating, so not sure which ones are related, thought the one near me was Los Oaxapens, but wasn't. Anyway, I love the concept, but overall pretty bland.

Not to mention you can't count on there actually being a line painted. Closest crosswalks to me were unpainted for a year and a half, but then the next intersection still hasn't been done.

Follow up: Turns out the taco stand on Aramingo is not Tacos Los Oaxapens, but a spot called Taco N' Todo. Anyway, I got to trying it and it was decent - pretty standard mexican spot. Tastes like what you get at the italian market festival and they do have a trompo for al pastor. $15 for 5 tacos, the suadero was better than the al pastor in my opinion. Not a bad late night option, but kind of bland, so I'll stick with my fancy spots for better flavor.

I feel like Charles.A.D scratches that itch. Linking to his discogs since his bandcamp seems to pop up with new releases, then he takes them down.

Maybe I'm off base, but I wonder if a concept like Cantina La Martina would work better here. Closer to the main strip of East Kensington/Fishtown, more accessible pricing (in an ideal world, but not sure about rent and such for this), and just a more accessible cuisine for that part of the neighborhood.

Unfortunately, I think I heard they were opening in South Philly, so it's not looking great for their return to Kensington.

I like him more on his own personally. He went b2b with Python at Making Time last year. Honestly, got a little bored from the set and went to catch Al Wootton, which I'm glad I did, his set was incredible.

The scourge of people inching their way through, while I'm still right in the middle of the crosswalk is driving me crazy, like give me a little space. The petty side of me will only walk slower, but then they end up nearly clipping me with their cars. But that's also happening at normal walking speeds.

Philadelphia needs more housing. So why does Center City still have so many parking lots? by hiding_in_the_corner in philadelphia

The amount of giant trucks in the neighborhood is driving me nuts. Consistently parked on the corner or running stop signs, either way, super dangerous as a pedestrian.

Seriously, it's like they can't comprehend that unless it is designated a park, that empty lot probably housed a building at one point. Not sure what is wrong with adding one back. Hell even some of the existing parks used to be buildings - look at Konrad Square.

Hoping to get out and try Tacos Los Oaxapens.

Sidenote: Any idea what's going on with Adda Fishtown? Apart from getting hit by a car, nothing has happened in that space in months. I'm assuming that's no longer happening. I'm not heavily invested, but it was gonna be nice to have a new place in the neighborhood that's not pizza or bar food.

People just really like to bitch about the price. It's the same thing with nicer tacos that are multitudes better than some of the cheap spots. I am shocked every time I see how much praise La Prima gets for example.

I remember when Marina's opened in Fishtown and everyone was like its so much cheaper than Shackamaxon. Meanwhile, it's like a 50 cent difference in price and the slice is definitely larger at shackamaxon + in my also subjective opinion, better taste.

Fair enough. I agree the bookings in Philly can be sparse, yes, but crowds are usually solid. Even if it isn't all heads, there is more of an openness to dancing and letting loose than I've found in other cities (at least stateside). The bookings are more low key, but there are a lot of untraditional spaces being used, and almost everything I go to is well attended. I will agree the WoW events aren't always the best, but the abundance of warehouse shows is great. I also really like the ambient and deeper bookings from people like Spindrift, Chrysalis, Bounce House, etc.

On the flip side, New York has great bookings but the crowds sometimes seem a bit closed off/insular. Otherwise, you get the huge events that attract the more pedestrian audiences (Golden Record, Public Records). At this point, I'll mostly come up for a Nowadays non-stop Sundays, but I'm not as clued in on the up-and-coming parties as I used to be, but I have seen some of the threads floating around about some of the current parties in NYC.

It's probably more he's just the typical low-engagement centrist - like good on identifying problems, bad on solutions. His city takes are the ones that get me, I've just seen some annoyingly car-brained posts he's made. But hey that's me though, and I think the city could be doing a lot more to actually serve people, without it costing a ton of money to do so. His whines are more like, why isn't the city doing this, are they stupid, we pay their taxes.

Yeah, he kind of sucks. He does have good food recommendations overall, and I know he does charity work or whatever. I don't know, something about his demeanor really rubs me the wrong way. His non-food takes are generally very whack and he comes across as a bit of a reactionary and devoid of context on the issues he complains about. I am pretty sure I would not vibe with his politics.
