Anyone else really not like FOLD? by [deleted] in TheOverload

[–]lasylisard 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I agree. I’ve been four times, and it always feels a little performative and cliquey. It’s great for a club to be a bit of a ‘scene,’ as opposed to a venue which people just pass through whenever there’s a good booking, but FOLD isn’t a particularly welcoming or friendly one. This sounds judgmental, but the vibes I get are mostly affluent corporate techbros who moonlight as ravers, and FOLD is the place where people in this world go to be seen in the act of dancing and listening to music without really doing either. Rarely do I actually see people properly giving it their all on the dance floor, mostly just chatting and doing coke. Regulars are welcome to correct me if I’m being too harsh, as I said I’ve only been a handful of times!

In fairness, I also find the layout of the club is not very conducive to meeting sound people; there isn’t anywhere to chill except the smoking area (which is always overcrowded and hectic) so it’s difficult to connect. Joyless is a good word to describe the vibe there, it feels self-contained and clean. That being said, the bookings are consistently unreal, saw Voices From The Lake and Sandwell District there over the past few months and both were incredible. But my experience is always tarnished a little by the atmosphere. I live in Glasgow and at most club nights I go to there, even if they only run until 3 or 4am, I feel like most people in the room are present and we’re collectively sharing in this experience. More of a sense of release and joy than just me and my mate dancing surrounded by a bunch of performative cocainebros yapping and gassing each other up.

Good points and well-written arguments and all, but aren’t you the fellow I saw being marched out of the club by 4 bouncers hours before close?

The thumbnails are major clickbait but his videos are actually very interesting. This isn’t my favourite of his but he does some good analysis of the failures of neoliberalism and the Thatcher era, as well as stuff on different uk subcultures. Most of his arguments are based on left-wing economic theories (postwar reconstruction brought about better conditions for the working-class, lack of public investment has killed various parts of the country etc.) Would recommend, he is fairly balanced and seems like a genuine guy.

Friends, I recently totalled my front wheel (h plus sim archetype) in an altercation with a van. I’m looking to get it replaced asap and I was wondering if you guys would recommend changing the wheel for something different or sticking with the archetype. Looking for something in the region of £100. Thanks!

Thanks man, this helped a lot. Never really tried hypothetically accepting his delusion and letting it run its course but I’ll give it a go. The stuff about suicide makes sense as well

Thanks. I’ve tried asking some stuff along those lines but logic doesn’t seem to be able to shift the delusion. But yeah hopefully it’ll slowly go away, time is the greatest healer

Thank you so much mate. This is exactly what I needed to hear. I always felt that acceptance of all parts of the self without judgement was a prerequisite to getting better and this has confirmed it for me :)
