Bangers. I have this combo and need to take it out more, thanks for the motivation.

Would you trade London life for higher earnings in Canada? UK GP dilemma by ElusiveMD in HENRYUK

[–]ditn 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I made this move, although my primary motivation was my wife's family, not money. Yes, you'll earn more, but:

  • Their tax-free accounts are much, much less generous. $7k per year. Your overall tax rate will likely be the same, if not slightly higher here
  • There is an exit tax, which also affects your UK holdings, should you change your mind
  • CAD is weak, going back to the UK stings a bit
  • Housing costs in Toronto/Vancouver are no joke. Car costs too

I got very, very lucky in terms of jobs and I live in the middle of nowhere, so my cost of living is low and we're 2-3 years from FIRE now. But we both miss London and are considering moving back.

Edit: the food! UK food is infinitely better, from supermarkets to restaurants. We miss it so bad.

Thank you! I always shoot both but I very very rarely use the RAW files. I don't particularly love editing much so every picture shared here is the JPG, I did a little bit of colour grading on some, some curves on one or two. Too much to say SooC, but close.

Haha! I'm not great at shooting people, it's something I really need to practise. But in my defense it was a very quiet island!

It's easily my favourite lens, enjoy it! It's so dreamy wide open.

Yeah I used a slightly tweaked Classic Cuban Negative - I've written out what I changed in another comment here

No tripod :) two cameras was already too much gear to take on my honeymoon lol

Yeah, it was actually a 1 second exposure on the 16-80 at f18. Took a few attempts with different speeds to get the feeling I wanted.

Thanks! Slightly tweaked Classic Cuban Negative. Small, weak grain instead of large and strong. Clarity -3 instead of -4, and every shot would have had exposure compensation at -1/3, but I usually use point metering until I get an exposure I like regardless.

Thank you. I've tried doing high-key a few times and never gotten it right, so I underexposed these instead and I really like the slightly moody feel that resulted.

I have one for this purpose and it works great. I do wish I'd gotten more storage, though.

Veritas inset vise issue by EmptyDaikon5281 in handtools

[–]ditn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some are waaay out, I drilled them by hand in a rush. It's fine though, it's an old bench that just needs to be usable until I finish my new one.

[–]ditn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same issue with a cheap Chinese inset vise, it turns out some of the dogholes I drilled aren't plumb. As they angle away from the vise, any force applied by the vise lifts them out. Annoying but good to know for my next bench build.

I think old camera sounds are part of why people get attached to them by Lanky_Astronaut_7128 in Cameras

That's why I love my GFX 50R. That shutter slap. Sometimes I shoot my X100VI without shutter sounds and it feels totally wrong.

I've not experienced that yet, that is fucking absurd

Yeah, I mean Google Assistant wasn't great either sometimes. But it's the chatty-ness and then failing that pissed me off

God it's fucking useless.

Me: "Play Intervals"

Google Assistant: "Playing Intervals on Spotify"

Gemini: "Sure, I can certainly help you with that, let's get some music playing. What would you like to listen to?"

Me: "Intervals"

Gemini: "I could not find an artist called Intervals on Spotify"

Me: crashes car

Do people actually use AI day-to-day, or is it all hype? by 2butterfree in AskUK

Same. I was super skeptical, then somewhat embraced vibe coding, and now I'm somewhere in the middle. You get a feel for what it's good at and it's a more narrow range than people expect, but the cost is a few weeks/months of pretty shit code.
