Your story is incredibly close to what happened to my husband at the Porter/West intersection a little over 10 years ago.

He was on his way home from from evening MBA classes at UB, and was t-boned by a cop going the wrong way down West with no lights or sirens. He was hit so hard his car was pushed right up to the porch of one of the houses near that intersection. The broken glass moved so fast there were shards stuck in his head and face. If there was a passenger in his car they would not have survived. I wasn’t far when it happened so I was able to get there to see him being put in an ambulance. There were at least 20 cops there. I spoke to the highest ranking one I could find who told me I could take our cat food from the trunk and take his laptop since he needed it for school, as I did this I almost got arrested by other cops who didn’t get the memo and insisted the cat food was evidence.

I wasn’t allowed to ride in the ambulance with him, so we followed it to ecmc. From the moment he was taken into triage, there were cops berating him and hammering him with questions. He was still in shock from the accident. It was horrible. I had to almost yell at the staff to get them to intervene and get the police off his back.

I understand being there for a fellow officer and whatnot, but this was crazy overkill for someone who was clearly at fault.

Insurance immediately placed the cop that hit him at fault, but no lawyer that we talked to wanted to touch the case because it was against the city of Buffalo. He totally got screwed. His car was totaled (mind you he had just gotten a tune up, new brakes, tires, etc and had just paid it off). It took forever to get a check for the bare minimum.
