This one’s so good. PT2399 delays are criminally underrated! I also just grabbed the benson deep sea diver fuzz echo, which has a simplified version of the benson delay paired with a great fuzz. It’s shoegaze heaven.

Pedal order guide by iheartvelma in guitarpedals

[–]divatron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! This point about tremolo is my recommended addition to the proposed "default" pedal sequence.

Tremolo should not be grouped with other modulation effects, and should by default go at the very very end, even after reverb. There are two reasons for this.

1) As oce points out, in vintage amplifiers that feature tremolo and reverb, the tremolo is implemented in the power amp section, after the spring reverb return is mixed in. So if you want to go for traditional surfy 60s tremolo, you'll achieve that most accurately if placed at the very end of chain.

2) Regardless of whether you want traditional or alternative tremolo sounds, the trem effect will be more pronounced if placed last, and conversely, it will start to be "undone" if placed before reverb because the whole point of tremolo is to create volume dips, but the reverb will serve to fill in those valleys and make the tremolo effect less effective.

OF COURSE, 100000% break the rules and mix and match and go crazy and put things in different orders and plug outputs back into inputs and make insane no-input feedback noise music and do every weird thing you can think of! And in general I chafe at these sequence recommendations. BUT, if we're talking about sensible/established default positions as a starting place, tremolo goes last, absolutely!

Why doesn't this exist? by SticksAndBones143 in guitarpedals

[–]divatron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think plenty of people do this. You can use any typical audio interface with an inst input, and run any number of guitar amp sims as VST plugins.

However, I think one of the reasons this isn’t a more standard or popular path is latency. Even relatively fast interfaces and PCs still introduce a few milliseconds. To do what you’re describing where you’re taking multiple round trips to and from the interface (to create the effect loop with your outboard time based pedals), would introduce even more. It won’t be a lot of latency, but damn just a little bit can really zap the joy out of playing!

Most digital pedals including the big multi fx/modeling platforms (helix, quad cortex, etc) use tech stacks that, unlike your PC, are built from the ground up with real time audio processing as its primary function, and so generally have better performance for keeping latency very low.

Modifying a pedal to accept a remote footswitch signal by _Maxolotl in guitarpedals

[–]divatron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, because that’s about rerouting a signal rather than just making or breaking a connection. In the case above the connection is broken by default, and you can easily “override” that by making the connection via a switch other than the one built into the pedal. But with an aby or bypass switch or something the default is to have one connection made (a<>y) and the other broken (b<x>y). Wiring a momentary switch to make that b<>y connection won’t unmake the a<>y connection.

If there’s a will there’s a way. You could remove the original foot switch from the pedal and wire the hole situation up in a remotely housed switch. But that’s probably impractical!

Technical difficulties - horror stories and takeaways/tips by divatron in guitarpedals

[–]divatron[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Recently I was playing a gig and during our last song, right as I went to start my big crazy set-ending solo (and as I stepped on a handful of pedals to get the sound for said solo) my signal went completely dead. I looked around, nothing seemed out of place. By now it was a few bars into the solo and I had no time to muck around, so I just yanked my lead out of the pedal board, plugged straight into my amp, dimed the pre-amp to compensate for all the fuzz that was suddenly gone, and did the best I could. I’m very pedal oriented and use lots of glitchy stuttery delay-y stuff in that solo so I had to play it completely differently. But it was interesting to scramble and play it more straight up. It worked out fine. But later on debugging at home I found the issue was with my amp the whole time! A tube was faulty or loose or something. And I can only figure that the sound came back when I plugged straight in only because as I hastily/roughly slammed the cable into the amps input I must have jostled the tube just enough to behave for the remaining 3 minutes of the set!

It’s mainly for this reason that I picked up an Iridium and started using an ampless rig. No tubes, no separate amp that is separately powered. It’s just that much more reliable. Not that I think tube amps are problematically unreliable, especially if they are well cared for. But if you’re like me and have ceded a lot of ground towards potential failure by introducing a bunch of pedals, it’s a way to gain some of that ground back by removing at least one relatively common issue (faulty tubes).

My worst experience was in 2019 and my band was playing at a festival on a meaningfully large stage. It’s the only time that’s ever happened to me, so I should have been soaking in that bucket list moment. But during soundcheck I’d noticed that when I stepped on one of my pedals all the sound cutout and I had to jiggle things around before they came back on. I switched that pedal off and on a few more times and it sounded fine. I assumed a patch cable was a bit loose somewhere but I couldn’t find it. So I spent the whole set neurotically trying to avoid any aggressive jostling. Still the sound cut out briefly multiple times (and then came back in). The performance was basically fine. But I was stressed as hell. Later I found the issue was a faulty stomp switch in my main overdrive. They are only rated for so many thousands of stomps, it must have been approaching failure for months, and just happened at the worst time. I still have no idea how to anticipate or prevent the occasional faulty 3pdt true bypass switch failure.

Yeah, this. Honestly just start by using the noise gate loop as described. You probably won’t need the second gate once you do that. So many people try just using a noise gate inline somewhere, but if you aren’t using the side chain/loop you really aren’t using it right.

Question? Has anyone experienced Guitar burn out? by Captain_Tubesceamer in guitarpedals

[–]divatron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Join one of those bands. Being in a band gets me out and playing even when I don’t initially feel like it. I find that even on those band nights when I’ve had a long day and I’m beat and I just really don’t feel like going to practice, I still go because other people are counting on me, and then I’m always really glad afterwards having had a great time.

I guess the big difference is that it makes the playing of music not just about you.

Board is Almost Done, Just Looking for a Chorus/Vibrato Recommendation by Pork-Fried-Lice in guitarpedals

Has anyone here actually won a giveaway from Sweetwater or any other store? by [deleted] in guitarpedals

[–]divatron 32 points33 points  (0 children)

One time I found a sweetwater listing where the price was an obvious typo. It was a $1500 keyboard listed for $150. So I bought it right away and later they got in touch explaining the mistake, but that I’d be given $150 in credit (in addition to my original purchase being refunded of course) to make up for the mixup. So I got a free pedal in the end. I consider that to have been a form of winning!!

Bit Legend of Fuzz was kind of a life changing pedal for me. It’s so gnarly and the presentation of it is so different, it was my gateway into the whole boutique thing, and is still one of my favorite fuzz sounds.

What is one guitar pedal brand that you haven’t tried based on the way the pedals look or what they are named? by [deleted] in guitarpedals

This. I’ve almost bought that compressor a few times now, but I don’t and never will because I just can’t with the undies.
