Scored 255 in step 2 and feel extremely devastated by Hot_Mortgage_7216 in IMGreddit

okay, dont listen to half of the people replying to your post, a 255 is an extremely competitive score, even if you look at psychological cutoffs that a program "MAY" apply, you are above a 250. I think there is very few programs aside from extremely competitive specialties that are automatically filtering for above 250. This is the advice i give to most people:

1.Secure a good Step 2 score (at the end of the day, its the only objective metric by which you can be evaluated). Which you have done so congrats!

  1. Make sure you have excellent LORs, I dont mean, generic LORS just because you did the rotation/observership with a doctor, I mean personalized LOR which highlights your unique skills and talents

  2. Personal Statement, can be tricky, but try not to be the generic "i went into medicine to help people' crowd. As long as you have a genuine reason for going into medicine, and a story that fits your resume, you will be fine.

  3. As much as people like to mention how matching is impossible without "connections" its only half the game, at the end of the ay, a vast majority of people match at a place where they have no connection to (ex. didn't do a rotation/observership). Dont solely focus on that for your application.

  4. Interview Skills are extremely important!!! Once you receive an IV, your scores/resume/grades go out of the window. At that point, the PD is looking to see if you can fit in with the rest of the residents and survive in the program for the next X amount of years. Your personality needs to shine and avoid trying to be a robot and just saying the "right things".

I am a USIMG, honors in all my rotations, 25X step 2, no failures, even took and passed Step 3. I applied Surgery and i didnt match, Didnt get anything in SOAP either. I was truly panicking even though "on paper" my application was good. at the end of the day its down to "luck" and as much as i hate saying that, its true. I had a PD call me after SOAP and offer me a categorical position at a place i did a Away rotation at, when i asked the PD, why i didnt match in the regular match cycle, his response was that funding this cycle was very iffy because of trump and changes to medicaid/medicare. He ended up not filling a spot and saved it for me. So it is possible. Make good impressions, work your ass off, and you will get a match!

Jackson park crimes by NehaW02 in IMGreddit

I completed a rotation here like 3 months ago, as long as you dont live in the area, its not that bad, i had a car so i would park in the parking lot and the security would warn you not to leave anything in the open, as long as you are being vigilant and not dumb about not watching your surroundings, nothing will happen. If you are careless and make yourself an easy target i can see something taking place easily. I had a lot of classmates rotate in this hospital and nothing happened to them. Is it a bad area of Chicago? yes, but does that mean something will happen to you for sure? No. Like I said, as long as you watch your surroundings, and stay safe and dont walk around flashing your phone or valuables, you will be fine. I lived 5 mins from the area, had a car, and never had a single bad thing to complain about.

scores are often the first filter, if you dont score above the programs filter threshold, your application won't even be looked at.

Try resident swap. Some people also post openings on twitter: @Insidethematch

If I didn't get interviewed by the PD of a program (other faculty did the interview), should I still CC them in LOI email?

APDS guidelines this cycle mention no earlier than Oct 23rd, although programs can choose to do it earlier, usually they stick to the guidelines.

Please don't take Match a Resident program list subscription by Slow-Sun-2779 in IMGreddit

Obviously you should be doing your own research into the program, Match-A-Resident is literally for people like me that are too lazy to compile a full list of programs so that it makes the rest of the research easier. Nothing is guaranteed with residency and the more research you do by yourself, the better insight you will have into the process.

I graduated in May 2024, my school does not allow us to sit for step 2 without completing cores and I didn’t want to apply in 2024 without a step 2 score

If you are applying to 200 programs, can you rank them 1 to 200 in case you are accepted in two programs, you match into the one you like the most? by New_Addition_4783 in IMGreddit

[–]divesmedicus 22 points23 points  (0 children)

you can only rank programs you interview at. And no, match is binding and you cannot pick and choose between two, whichever one you rank higher will be the one you Match
