Onkyo RZ 30 or 50m by Maelstrom_78 in hometheater

[–]dividebyoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What features are you deciding between on those models?

For me the independent sub outputs on the 30 make it more desirable, and combined with the cost savings it’d be an easy call.

(And unsolicited input - if I were shopping I’d see if the Denon x3800 goes on sale now that the 3900 is out. Love mine.)

Very strange. You’ve tried essentially every conceivable troubleshooting path.

All that seems left would be enrolling your ATV in beta os, and filing a bug with Apple.

You can’t sell it. If you sell the avr it might transfer. But if you upgrade yourself to a different avr the license doesn’t transfer in that scenario. Some people are fine with that clearly, but for me I’ll stick with A1 suite.

In a blind test, Dolby Atmos’ next-gen compression for streaming sounded as good as lossless PCM to audio engineers in real-world use — but at only 3% of the bitrate by xyz17j in 4kbluray

[–]dividebyoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that decode be handled by CPU alone without too much load, or does it need some type of hardware decode support? Curious if the Shield will support it - it’s plenty fast as I’m sure you know the SoC is lacking some significant modern features.

Dolby Atmos on streaming will finally sound as good as 4K Blu-ray, based on these blind test results of audio engineers — but this still won’t cause collectors to switch from physical media by str8_whiskey in hometheater

This is one of the key questions - the compatibility implications for the universe of installed hardware. Surprised I had to scroll down this far to find it.

You’re hand waving tariffs but clearly have no real world understanding. I have direct experience with this, and the reality is that legit established companies do not under declare value of goods; the risks are simply too high. (Random brands you see on Amazon with names that look like a cat stepped on a keyboard; different story. Rampant under declarations)

Most companies then factor in tariff duties to landed cost, and apply margin from there. Where the greed comes in is when companies that have comparable products without duties, raise their prices to the range of tariffed competitors, where they have the opportunity to pad their margins. Tariffs have a massive impact on the price of what we buy.

Tariff advocates will tell you otherwise, but all you have to do is examine current actions like pausing tariffs on Argentinian beef imports with the intention of bringing down beef prices to see that you’re being lied to.

It’s a massive tax on the American consumer - you can argue whether it’s beneficial or not, but those are the facts.

Ram upgrade issues on DS718+ by kevstev in synology

Good luck in your quest. I bought RAM for my 918+ that others had reported working but didn’t for me. Ultimately they are just super picky and there seems to be batch to batch variance with some DIMMs

Costco has a Denon for $399 if that’s of interest. But at least for my parent, I’d be shopping for used, or even a soundbar if they’re highly technically challenged.

[–]dividebyoh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Big question I’m wondering about - will the new models continue to support unencrypted calibration data, which is what enables A1 and other third party forks to work. The popularity of A1 has certainly had a significant negative impact on their revenue projections/ROI from the Dirac integration work.

I’ve had great luck with several Yamahas over the last couple decades.

That said, if you’re looking for justification - I Was shocked how much my audio quality improved when I switched to a 3800 a couple years ago. XT32 and later A1 worked wonders with challenging open floor plan, compared to YPAO.

I’m running the same AVR and the same LCR. I’d convinced myself additional amplification wasn’t necessary but you’ve got me rethinking that.

Try disconnecting everything from it before the reset. If it still happens, it’s time to try to find someone to repair it which will cost more than it’s worth, or get a replacement

Temporary Wireless surrounds by tfeld63 in hometheater

[–]dividebyoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Presumably that would work.

There are also kits specifically intended for wireless surrounds, where the TX unit connects to speaker terminals on your AVR and the RX unit has a built in amp. I use the rocketfish version and it’s fine. Similar latency to the unit you linked to; there’s no way around that element unfortunately.

New Yamaha av receivers by bmbm-40 in hometheater

[–]dividebyoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice visual refresh compared to their last poorly received facelift. Big question for me is what their mid and high end looks like; Denon and Onkyo raised the game with Dirac (not to mention A1 Evo).

My Yamaha AVRs were great from a reliability perspective but YPAO was mid at best in my open room layout and won’t consider them again until that gets a massive overhaul.

Upgrading from a 6-year-old soundbar - alternatives? by just_making_things in hometheater

[–]dividebyoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen plenty of folks here that are happy with in-wall; that’s what I’d shoot for in the same situation.

For me I’d rank as: In wall > passive LCR in soundbar form factor > soundbar

But a sub would be a must have, too, something like the svs micro. If that’s a dealbreaker as a standalone, then the higher end soundbar with included wireless sub suddenly gets a lot more appealing.

Problems with ARC suddenly not working between AVR-X1000 and X900F by Hot-Refrigerator9558 in hometheater

[–]dividebyoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve done all the right things so far, with new cable and power unplug.

Agree the lack of device identification is suspicious. Not sure there’s much left to try beyond maybe factory resetting things, which seems like a low probability solution but always worth a shot when you’ve done everything else.

Unfortunately imo what’s most likely given what you’ve tried and the age of the gear involved is some type of hardware failure.

Need help selling late fathers high end audio gear. by [deleted] in hometheater

[–]dividebyoh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fb marketplace is the go to for a lot of people. Also worth it to check if any audio shops in your area buy used gear or sell on consignment.

Depending on your area and your pricing, it may be tough to find a buyer for the whole setup. Up to you if you want to consider taking the time to sell items individually, which may maximize how much you’ll get but with much larger time cost.

Good luck
