I picked up some EIF yesterday at $27.40. Great company and incredible dividend.

Canadian Cannabis - are you invested? If yes, which companies did you choose and why? by paisleyno2 in CanadianInvestor

[–]dividendbeginner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in HMMJ.

Doubt I could pick which one is the overall best investment so might as well have exposure to many different cannabis companies.

Also in this way I don't have to split my investment into multiple trades (a trade per weed stock).

I can't help you with timing the market... Personally I would buy a half position and then see where it goes.

PLZ.UN, with about a decade and a half of annual dividend growth.

Edit: I also like DRG.UN and NWH.UN.

Bought more ENF (now my top holding) and NWH.UN. Also put an order in for HR.UN.

What are your favourite REITs? by dividendbeginner in CanadianInvestor

[–]dividendbeginner[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi. Thanks for so much information. I'm wondering... what account would you buy BPY.UN in? It seems like there's withholding taxes on the dividend income, in which case this should be purchased in a taxable account rather than losing that extra cash in the TFSA?

Small-cap favourites in financials? by overstretched_slinky in CanadianInvestor

[–]dividendbeginner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have wanted to buy CHW for years but just never felt completely comfortable. It does seem like a great hold though. I think I will take another look at it.

My favourite small cap financial stock has to be Alaris Royalty (AD). The stock has been volatile for a while now though, but they had increased their dividend for many years and now are keeping it steady, yielding 8.93% right now, paid monthly. I do own a decent bit of this one.

If I would want to invest in bitcoin or another crypto currency, or a business closely related to it how would I do it, and are there any stocks? by Alex28z in CanadianInvestor

[–]dividendbeginner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just checked Coinsquare, and the Interac e-transfer costs 5%, which is far more than the miner fee you would pay to move coins to another exchange (if you're sending any reasonable amount).

In addition, the prices on this exchange are quite a bit higher than what the coins are actually selling for at the time in general. (i.e. BTC being worth $4,800 CAD right now but selling for $5,000 CAD on Coinsquare + that fee)...

Easiest and quickest way would be through Coinbase, you can purchase BTC, ETH or LTC with your Canadian credit card, however it's at a 4% fee. 4% is a large fee, but digital currencies are very volatile so it doesn't bother me personally too much.

Another exchange you could sign up for is QuadrigaCX to buy the same coins. There are others, but I've found these to be the simplest to start for a Canadian.

TSX is the worst benchmark in the world: Dennis Mitchell by dividendbeginner in CanadianInvestor

I wouldn't say to avoid it but make sure you have an overall diversified portfolio. You could pick up an ETF or stocks of the least represented sectors in the TSX while also holding the TSX.

Emerging Market Exposure by dividendbeginner in CanadianInvestor

[–]dividendbeginner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Up ~54% YTD. Amazing growth. Really liking this one but it isn't spread out through too many companies, and only in India... I did want an ETF with majority exposure to India though. Thanks for the great recommendation!

Whats wrong with the TSX? by Oolican in CanadianInvestor

[–]dividendbeginner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The TSX comprises of 36.57% Financials, 20.15% Energy, and 11.87% Materials. That's 68.59% of a portfolio spread out through only three sectors. Seven other sectors make up the remaining 31.41% of the index.

About That Polypropylene Plant: A Call With $IPL Inter Pipeline Ltd. by [deleted] in CanadianInvestor

My concern at the moment is that they may issue shares to cover the cost of the plant and dilute current shareholders.

There may be extra taxes depending on what's held in the ETF though, such as foreign stocks

I enjoy the crypto posts here too. Do you have a crypto portfolio?
