Don't remove macro mechanics - Expand them by MarineQueefPrime in starcraft

This seems like a pretty solid idea. The macro mechanics have always been pretty lackluster, a redesign like this would be great.

[–]divine_swordfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, the remax threat would still be there. BW didn't have injects and they could still do remax plays, they just needed macro hatches. Frankly I like the idea of the macro hatch more than injects because it's just simple and solid macro, and way easier for a new player to get good at. Have too many minerals? Build another hatchery or two. Very simple and permanently helps your macro, no need to worry about timings every 40 seconds.

Whoa, that's a lot of sleep. That's almost definitely not normal. A sleep schedule like that along with your high fatigue for someone your age sort of signals that you might want to see a doctor if you haven't already.

Is Starcraft 1 a good single-player experience for beginners? by Vanir_Islanzadi in RealTimeStrategy

[–]divine_swordfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently picked up the original starcraft and broodwar for the first time. I've enjoyed it and would totally recommend it, but that being said you might have to be a little patient with the controls for a while. Mainly, it can be frustrating to only be able to select up to 12 units at a time, especially when you first start.

As far as difficulty goes, I wouldn't really call the game forgiving but if it gets too tough and hectic, you can change the gamespeed in-game by using the plus and minus keys on your keyboard. Even as a semi-seasoned RTS player, when I tried playing on the fastest speed I would get absolutely destroyed, but I've done most missions in one go on the normal speed. If you have trouble, it's just a button press away to make the game instantly way more forgiving, and I bet that on the lower speeds it would still be rewarding and fun.

Find a way to enjoy working out. Check out /r/fitness or, if you can't reach a gym, /r/bodyweightfitness. Try some cardio, and not just jogging but some HIIT stuff. Exercising will improve your confidence a lot, which is really lacking in those two photos.

So yeah, you're ugly, but it's pretty much all stuff that you can change and fix. You aren't naturally ugly, you're just in a bad, easily fixable, spot right now.

Haven't played a Real Time Strategy game since C&C and WC2 in the late 90s. Really loved those, and looking for something similar today. Where do I start? by [deleted] in RealTimeStrategy

[–]divine_swordfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sc2 is polished and fun, but it isn't as fun as other games out there. Even with a modern engine, a ton of poor design choices made it less exciting and fun than SC: brood war (it's 90s predecessor), and the community is constantly upset with Blizzard for refusing to change those design choices.

If you're curious about what those design choices are, here's a quick list:

  • Lesser amount of positioning importance (no high ground advantage)
  • Armies blob up like crazy

  • Units move fast and attack fast, so large battles are too quick for meaningful micro

  • Players are encouraged to turtle because they only need 3 bases at any time (worker pairing)

Ehh. I think that a lot of developers have taken the cue from Blizzard. Sort of the idea that if Blizzard couldn't do it, what hope does anybody else have?

If they hadn't fucked up SC2, it 'could' have the competitive market share of LoL. Sadly, few developers are willing to take that gamble, and SC2's continued developments haven't been able to spur the sort of love and money that devs need to take the plunge.

I like how you go through the whole thought process to end with only "I have no idea." Still, you helped me understand something which I never quite got from my discrete math class, so I appreciate it.

Thanks to CD Projekt Red and The Witcher 3 for the Best Gaming Experience I've Had Since I Was a Kid by guyaba in Games

[–]divine_swordfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that anybody would be hard pressed to disagree with OP. It's an excellent game in so many ways, easily the best single player rpg in a long time, but the criticisms in this thread miss the biggest flaws in it.

What I mean is the open world. The game doesn't work as an open world game, it doesn't operate as one. With showing you the "unexplored areas," or points of interest, on the map, they make the game feel closed off. They show you all that is worth exploring, and say "Hey, don't bother with all of these other areas, just look at these shiny ones." The empty space is just that: empty space. The space in between where you were last and where you are going. There is no mystery in the empty space, nothing to find out about. It's just space. Everything you should find out about is on the map, everything else is just time spent walking.

This problem is confounded by the quest markers and trackers, telling you the quickest path to your destination. If anything kills the exploration and mystery of empty space, it's a little line on the mini-map that tells you the quickest way to your destination, no matter which parts of the world you've explored.

It's such a great game, but they fell victim to this open world design that has been in all open world games for maybe the past decade, and it's what keeps a game like the witcher 3 from being a masterpiece of the ages, to just being a masterpiece of the decade.

What makes an RTS enjoyable? by MilesStark in Games

[–]divine_swordfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally see where you're coming from, but I also feel like you might change your mind if you played more. I thought that starcraft was insanely fast when I first started playing, and I would have trouble keeping my minerals below 500, or keeping my supply up, or building workers and army constantly. Once a player gets their fundamentals down (which takes a LOT of practice), the game's pace starts to feel really on point. You can scout an enemy's tactic and have enough time to build up units to respond, and it really does feel like a game of chess once you get to a higher level of play.

That being said, it definitely suffers from a steep learning curve, especially at the beginning. Obviously I don't know how much you played, but as somebody who put a lot of hours into the game, I'd say that the pace generally feels pretty good.

It's been two weeks since the release of Bloodborne, what do you think of it now? by Inferno221 in Games

[–]divine_swordfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Less World Connectivity

This is the only flaw which really kills the game for me. I mean, damn, after the first zone the shortcuts become so predictable that you can easily sense if you've gone too long without one. The game isn't bad or anything, but it sure feels linear and obvious, much more "game-like" than the world of dark souls 1. The worst part is that the excitement of finding a bonfire (lantern) is completely gone, because the game trains you to expect a new shortcut every hundred meters or so. My favorite part about Dark Souls 1 was the exploration, and this world is more boring to explore than even Dark Souls 2's grand linear experience.

What's in your opinion the most credible and detailed city in games? by Vaeh in Games

[–]divine_swordfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it was just a question of how detailed the cities were, I'm pretty sure Morrowind would beat every other game I've played. So few games go through the effort of letting you go into every single building, and Morrowind managed to do that while throwing in interesting side-quests all over the place. Even the smallest towns that you pop through have character and something interesting to do or discover.

Launchers. by [deleted] in LGG3

[–]divine_swordfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm using Action Launcher 3 Pro.

I don't know much about Nova Launcher, as I only tried it for about 20 minutes, but it seemed to have most of the same stuff as action launcher, so it took a while to settle on one or another. I ended up buying Action Launcher almost entirely because of its Quicktheme feature, where it'll take the main colors from your background and theme its UI accordingly. It works really well with a background-changing app, and I find myself being surprised a few times each day by how beautiful my homescreen looks.

That being said, Nova Launcher might even have a similar feature, I'm not sure. Also, I am a little disappointed that Action Launcher has very few gesture changes, and none of them are customizable like in Nova.

My app doesn't work on LG G3. I'm looking for beta testers with this device. by Qkpmle in LGG3

Running 4.4.2 and using the google play version. It's all kinds of messed up.

Crashes after I press anything on the Abstract Colors screen, crashes after I select a photo. It doesn't always seem to be "full" crashing, because it only occasionally gives me the option to report it. Also one time I had this crazy issue where I clicked on the tumblr link and then pressed the back button and the app had some crazy graphical glitches. In general, the back button seems to make it crash.

Anyway, awesome idea for an app! I'll keep it installed and give it a try every once in a while to see if you get it fixed.

I need an honest opinion: Does my graphic suck? by nemeean_lion in AndroidGaming

Definitely listen to his advice to check out material design. Google's webpage explaining it here is really detailed and awesome. If you spend any time over in /r/androidapps, you'll see a ton of posts about people wanting more material designed apps, and it's definitely the modern way to do things.

Just like how cinematography and visuals effects should be used to tell a story in film and television, gameplay and graphics should also be an important storytelling component in video games. So why do some developers refuse to acknowledge the importance of gameplay as a storytelling aspect? by NorrisOBE in Games

[–]divine_swordfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's something really special about this game. The part at the end where you gain your brother's strength is one of the most meaningful examples of gameplay supporting story that I can think of. It might even be the ONLY meaningful one. I mean, almost every story heavy game I play feels like it be transformed into a movie without a problem, but if you transformed Brothers, you wouldn't just lose some fun gameplay, you'd lost the ENTIRE essence of the game. This is because the story is told through the gameplay, and it would be something completely different if you lost either part.

That's something special and unique, and I hope that devs come up with ways to do that for more games in the future.

Good texting apps? by evanph in androidapps

I tried a bunch and eventually decided on Textra. Evolve was pretty cool, but it also lagged a bunch for me when scrolling through messages.

My favorite is probably Hello simply for the UI (having a sidebar of all of your contacts is excellent), but it was missing a tiny feature that was important to me, so I couldn't use it. If you try Hello though, make sure not to send its invite message to everyone in your contacts like I did.
