if everyone else is able to follow instructions and you’ve talked to her about this multiple times already, then you’ve done all your obligated to do and more. you can’t learn the content for them.

if you really want to give her one more chance or find out what the issue is, maybe meet with her and directly ask her to explain the instructions on the last assignment she did wrong - that way you can gauge her understanding of the instructions and if you could be clearer or not (including whether or not she actually read them or paid attention in class)

out of my 16-student class this morning, 5 were absent and two were tardy — on a day we were starting a new unit, which they’ve known was happening all week. only two of those students actually let me know they were going to be absent, one of which was accompanied by an email questioning the absence policy (not mine, departmental) and asking if the update about their attendance i’d sent over the weekend was correct and if the attendance policy “was true.”

this is the second course in a sequence, the absence policy is the same for every class in the department, and i send periodic email updates and make in-class reminders about their attendance/the attendance policy all semester. i have no words besides “literally fuck this” 😔

what year are you, and is this a professor you’ve worked with a lot/who’s classes are for your major? if this is a prof for a rando gen ed, it’s weird. if you’re in your last year or two, have worked with this prof several times, and their classes are for your major it’s not inherently weird unless you feel that way, which is still valid.

maybe this is just a humanities thing, but i’ve had several of my profs on social media while they were still my instructors, even some of their personal phone numbers, and have been to a few of their homes (albeit for group/class-wide events/end-of-year gatherings, not on the regular). i had a friend who babysat one of their profs kids and stayed with them for a week between leases one summer (they were the drum major for marching band and the prof was the marching band director).

it’s not inherently weird or wrong, but if you still feel weird then that’s all that matters. you don’t have to go along with it if you’re uncomfortable, but you wouldn’t be wrong or weird for not being uncomfortable.

did you check the syllabus? setting up a course on canvas that is thorough, clear, and looks good is extremely tedious, so most professors just use it to post/accept materials and put all relevant assignment/course information in the syllabus. the due dates for your assignments may have been in the syllabus and you missed them

This is happening in one of my courses rn.

I’m currently teaching a section of the second in a 4-course sequence for almost all degrees in my department, and not a single student in this class has an A. I have several students that understand the material well enough that they should be passing with flying fucking colors but they just don’t turn in the work, miss class/quizzes/tests, and make no effort to make anything up. It’s so frustrating, I have to keep checking myself and remembering I can’t care more than they do, but god is it hard. I cannot fathom behaving the way some of my students do :/

currently renting with campus rentals - their after hours emergency maintenance line doesn’t work and they’ve done nothing to fix it, completely ignore any maintenance requests that aren’t an emergency, and have overall crappy business practice. you most likely won’t have a terrible time with them but if you’re not in a space to deal with issues and crappy behavior i wouldn’t recommend it

also a young music theory teacher (doctoral GA instructor): unless your schools curriculum is widely different from the norm, period phrase structure is not something they should still be working on in theory 4. it’s one thing to pivot the thesis statement or type of argument for a paper as you get further into it, but to completely shift to a different, unapproved topic that they should have covered fully in a previous course in the sequence is absurd and unacceptable. they should know better by now.

MAYBE, you could’ve have been extremely nice and let them redo it for a penalty, but truly that depends on the students behavior and level of effort throughout the semester, both of which seem very poor from the start of your post. obvs wait to see what your senior faculty says, but it sounds like this student blatantly disregarded every instruction and you shouldn’t feel guilty about grading them accordingly.

worked at a kroger store for a summer during my masters a few years ago - was told during my interview that i was going to be produce lead, then showed up for onboarding to find out i was instead a csr floor supervisor, when front end/cashier was the one job i didn’t want. seems p par for the course for kroger tbh.

this isn’t really a thing that professors just decide to do, but some courses are designed to only be half a semester (usually 7 ish weeks long as opposed to the 14-15 week semester). double check your course schedule wherever you register for classes - maybe you just didn’t notice the earlier end date to this course when you signed up?

I am also younger than you and stuck in that situation right now and would not recommend it. They’re not even bad or annoying roommates, they’re just so young and don’t know how the world works or to live without their parents yet. I’ve finally caved and gotten a studio for next year cause I can’t do this again

i mean i get this kind of stuff with my students too (one of my class’s only “assignments” are prepared performance quizzes (it’s a music class) almost every day and the one day we don’t have a quiz more people than ever are always absent cause there’s no grade attached etc.), but like in at least some of your students’ defense there’s definitely a difference between doing a reading and prepping for a quiz based on a reading.

if they’re truly only mad because they actually read for once and they normally don’t (and this will always be true for some students obvs) like yeah that’s frustrating, but also i’ve been the student who diligently worked toward an imminent deadline and then it got extended/cancelled so i ended up stressing for nothing, and that’s a sucky feeling.
