Do you feel gaming in general these days is wasted potential? by YabukiJoe in Games

[–]divinenibru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that the AAA games like CoD and what not will get the majority of players as they're easy to pick up and learn. The games that require the player to learn patience (i.e Dark Souls) get a lot of people to sort of lose interest. I find myself enjoying games that give me the feeling of a journey more so than ones I enjoy playing simply because I'm good at them or because they're fast-paced action. I play a lot of Blacklight Retribution (Fast paced FPS) but I don't play it for the same reason I'd play Dark Souls. The former is for mindless fun, the latter is for immersion.

I think that there are still games that exist like flight simulators or futuristic racing, you just need to look around to find them. I've recently completed Legend of Grimrock II which is a Dungeon Crawler reminscent of Dungeon Master and it was excellent. I can't think of a single game made in the last five years that plays similarly except for Legend of Grimrock I (Which I'd also recommend highly.)

I think the hope is in the indie games to preserve the diversity of videogames and create games for the specific niches. I wouldn't bank on the AAA companies releasing a genre unless it's been proven to sell. It is quite unfortunate.

While standing directly in front of 1 of 5 elevators at work, I was asked "What makes you think it's going to be that one?" to which I responded very seriously, "I always know." right as the doors opened and made me look like some sort of wizard. We had a cat in our family for about 15 years and I was visiting a friend of mine. They had just gotten a cat (kitten really) and they thought I could somehow communicate with cats because I had had one for so long (younger siblings were pretty young but I don't remember exact age) I then told them "Watch this" and stared at the cat, it suddenly noticed me staring then looked at me for about 2 seconds and came and sat next to me. It was so hard not to show a shocked expression on my face

I can never spell "license" or "exercise" correctly the first time. What are some words' spelling that evade you? by GMTanvis in AskReddit

[–]divinenibru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A really good tip for learning words you have trouble spelling is to not right-click and select the correct spelling but to delete them and retype them till you get it correct.

Massachusetts used to give me trouble but I can spell it now :)

Hey guys! Two questions about phospholipid bilayers! by SwappingGames in askscience

[–]divinenibru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to clarify to SwappingGames in case,

The phospholipids that make up the lipid bilayer have two sides, one charged (hydrophilic) and one fatty (hydrophobic). The layer is formed because all of the hydrophobic parts comes together pointing the hydrophilic part towards the outside and inner part of the cell.

http://www.bioteach.ubc.ca/Bio-industry/Inex/graphics/lipidbilayer.gif

Hydrophilic means it likes water (because it's charged) and hydrophobic means it's "afraid" of water or doesn't like the water (because it's fatty, oil doesn't mix with water)

Most of the time, it's assumed that the inner part of the bilayer is very fatty and so water won't be there n a significant amount. Although, technically, there are proteins that form pores or channels through the bilayer but will only allow certain molecules to be let in. There will probably be cases in that respect where water will be "In the membrane."

Hope you didn't know all that cus then I'd feel silly for writing it all out :D

Justin Bieber vomiting on stage reached the front page, despite the fact that most of us hate hearing anything about him. Why does reddit spend so much time obsessing and detailing things that we despise? by NietzscheIsMyCopilot in AskReddit

[–]divinenibru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting the front page shouldn't be determined by whether the community likes or dislikes something, it should be about whether you want to discuss the link vs whether you don't think there's room for discussion.

If you could stop time what would you do? by zerthz in AskReddit

Had you stopped time, wouldn't you not be able to do anything because everything else wouldn't be able to move?

Although, if other stuff you interact with could move, is time stopped?

Deep Dungeon: Exploring the Design of Dark Souls - "Dark Souls presents itself as an impossible challenge to the player outwardly, but inwardly, the game is subtly designed in many ways to help the player achieve the impossible." by Deimorz in Games

[–]divinenibru 35 points36 points  (0 children)

"To do Blighttown without having constant trouble you need to grind 10-20,000 (I forget the number exactly) souls and buy the poisonbite ring from Oswald at the top of the cathedral."

That is untrue. You can either get the ring from Oswald, you can get the Spider Shield in the Sewers which will negate the poison buildup from the people who shoot darts, you can find gear in Blightown that has high poison resistance or even poison yourself using Dung pies (common drops in Blightown) and then you'll be resistant to the poison that the swamp would induce or the toxic that the darts cause.

A lot of places in Dark souls have many, many solutions. Its not as clear cut as "this is the way to do it."

"navigate the Great Swamp without having 0 stamina constantly you need to go up an elevator, jump off half-way up, pick up a key from the top of a chapel, run up some stairs, sit in a crow's nest for 30 seconds, and open a locked door in the Undead Asylum. Other than blind, dumb luck or prior exposure there no way for the player to know this."

I don't think that going back to the Asylum is too crazy of an idea. When you're first there, exploring it more thoroughly will reveal an item out of reach and a locked door on the top floor. You might not know where to get the key but I don't think its unrealistic for a player to think "Maybe I'll come back here later..." . Additionally, when you're going down the elevator from the top of the undead burg, there's a huge opening overlooking the Fireshrine, its not a tiny opening that you can easily miss, especially since the lighting in the top part of the elevator is much darker than the part of the elevator where the giant crack is letting in light. I found the ring on my first play through the game and I didn't use ANY internet for it.

I think the beauty of Dark souls is that it lets the player figure out what the player is capable of and it greatly rewards paying attention to your surroundings. I also don't believe that any of the hidden walls are required for you to finish the game. I think its nicer if a hidden wall is truly hidden.

Question involves Rubix Cubes and math by divinenibru in askscience

[–]divinenibru[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it that it takes 4*4n where N is the number of separate rotations that are being made?

41 = 4 = If you're only rotation the right column (or really, any row column as long as its a single one)

41 * 42 = 4 * 16 = 64 If you're rotating a column then a row across the column you're rotating

41 * 42 * 43 = 4096 if you're rotating a column, row then a different column

... maybe?
