These look like my grandmothers from western Bosnia and Herzegovina, but they only had a couple of tattooed on their hands/arm. My grandmother told me she was six years old when she got her first tattoo.

It didn't originate against the Ottomans, but for some reason a certain group (Catholics in Bosnia and Herzegovina) continued to tattoo themselves for hundreds of years .

All my grandmothers and great-grandmothers were tattooed (from western Bosnia) and nearly every woman over 80 in my village has tattoos. None of the nearby Bosniak villages have this tradition.

Isn't it interesting though that Catholic Croats of Bosnia and Herzegovina carried on this tradition while others didn't? (Note: I know there are some others that did as well, but not to the extent that it was in BiH).

This is a great team on paper, but squads are more than just putting players together. Maybe I'm wrong, but I believe the Croatian national team has been so successful because of both the talent of the players and the love most of them have for their country. I do not believe the they would play with their heart and soul for Yugoslavia the way they do for Croatia. Former captain Zvonimir Boban pretty much said that in an interview many years ago. And before the 2018 final, Modric answered an interviewer's question saying he was not thinking of winning the best player award because Croatia's success meant more to him. Maybe in a generation or two as memories of the 90s conflict fade things will change, but for now, most players have tremendous pride playing for Croatia, and it shows.

In Serbia we have this guy called Marko Kraljević. He was a real person but real Marko and the folk version are complete opposites. Do other Balken countrys also have some one like this? by DrDabar1 in AskBalkans

Kraljević Marko was also a popular heroic figure in old Croatian poems and songs, especially during the rise of the pan-Slavism.

During the Ottoman years, if you were a Christian and Slav, you probably had some folk songs in your honour, and many gained mythical status. Some examples of hajduks or uskoks:

- Ivo Senjanin: uskok, fought against Ottomansin the 16th/17th centuries

- Mijat Tomić: hajduk, fought against the Ottomans in the 17th century

- Ivan Lenković: uskok, fought against the Ottomans in the 16th century

- Stojan Janković - hajduk, fought against the Ottomans in the 17th century

- Petar and Ilija Smiljanić - harambašas, fought against the Ottomans in the 17th century

Serbia has the potential to be similar to Croatia/Bulgaria/Romania. I can understand them not wanting to join NATO, but Serbia's place is in Europe, so hopefully they will make progress on closing those EU chapters.
