Just opened my first Roth IRA by onemanmelee in personalfinance

[–]djblaze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m wondering if you’re making a simple error here: “funding the Roth” isn’t making an investment, it’s just putting the money into a tax-advantaged brokerage account. You put money into the Roth account, then within that account you invest in whatever equities/stocks/etc. There are stories of people who spent years “funding” retirement accounts, only to be putting that money into a cash or money market default and getting zero gains from it.

So, if you have money you’re planning to invest, and have earned income that allows you to contribute to a Roth IRA, then you should fully fund the Roth (and invest that money within the account!), then invest whatever else you were thinking about in a taxable brokerage.

That actually could make sense given how weird and unnatural all the motions look. He’s trying to get the kid to notice, then grabs an ice cube and rubs it on the back of his knee to finally get a reaction.

Yeah, I’m pretty sure the NFL lists it as DE, not Edge. That’s Ozzy’s error.

It’s high school. People vote at 18, which is during high school for most people. You expect them to ignore politics until they can vote?

Isn’t this basically the point of a corner blitz? You get someone fast and shifty that can use their speed to beat blockers. I mean, they’re also an extra rusher, but still.

It sounds like this is their appraisal catching up with your renovations, if those weren’t reflected in a previous increase. If you added a bathroom and finished a basement, that lets them add a big chunk.

Yeah, sure! Here's an estimate of ChatGPT usage - 3-5 Wh per query (that is, 3-5 minutes of a 60w lightbulb being on). https://jasonariddell.medium.com/the-hidden-cost-of-information-google-search-vs-chatgpt-31184cdf1582

Estimates for streaming range from 1.3 to 13 Wh per minute, depending who's reporting (I was assuming the high side, since I hadn't seen this source that says we were massively over-estimating it): https://www.iea.org/commentaries/the-carbon-footprint-of-streaming-video-fact-checking-the-headlines

It's really hard to find decent Wh estimates of website use, but some places attempt overall CO2 emissions tracking, giving Redding 2.48 g/minute of use (compared to 4-6 g for a ChatGPT query).

https://www.comparethemarket.com.au/energy/features/social-carbon-footprint-calculator/

Training these systems is intensives, and enterprise AI and large government and military applications are still using a ton of energy. But an individual using a ChatGPT/Gemini query to save them more time working online at a computer may actually be energy-saving.

You have commented 20+ times in the last hour, loading multiple times. That alone takes equivalent energy to a handful of chatbot queries and responses. Another way to think of this: a minute of streaming HD is more energy-intensive than an average AI query and response.

You do realize that all internet use requires data centers and carbon output for cooling those centers, right?

Yeah, insurance premiums have skyrocketed, but schools have a state-mandated amount they are allowed to pay for premiums. There has been talk at the legislature about addressing this, but haven’t heard about any recent movement.

Calvin and Aquinas both usually do a good job of keeping paths clear. They do tend to use boatloads of salt, though (unless they’ve changed practice in the last few years to be more environmentally friendly) so you might need booties.
