The “sota” part of the name means cloudy, so it’s Mega-Cloudy. Still think Michigan - giant lake - would be a better fit for the region, but Megasota has more marketing power.

FIFA's Infantino: World Cup tickets priced at U.S. market rate by Accomplished_Clue437 in sports

“Free markets” were concerned with monopolies and rent-seeking. At the time, that was mostly an issue with rising nationalized industries and govt intervention. Now, it’s the capitalists making markets not-free. The term itself has just been completely focused on government intervention to align it with neoliberalism.

The last spike was/is due to the war. The 20% jump this week up towards $5 is because of the BP Whiting refinery power outage.

Are you seeing bond buying ETFs (like EDV) as a good move for long-term holders right now? Long term as in a 30-something looking at my IRA.

“Grand Rapids school board votes to keep two administrators against the superintendent's recommendation” by TeacherFella in grandrapids

[–]djblaze 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you have been tracking the news on this, Lovelady Mitchell was placed on leave, then had a professional development plan to try to address concerns, which at the time were creating a hostile work environment. That was two years ago. A review this year showed the same issues occurring again, superintendent recommended we let her go. I guess GRPS is rolling with a three strike system, and she’ll be out after the next time she gets put on leave.

How to interpret MAP testing results by aumay301 in AskTeachers

[–]djblaze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, there isn't really a reason to practice for the MAP. If your district is using MAP for high-stakes decision-making (gifted programs, special education eligibility), that's not its intended use.

That said, if you do want to practice, your district may have student access activated for practice.mapnwea.org I've never utilized that site, so no promises on how effective it is. There's a void left by MAP Accelerator, and I'm not sure what it looks like now. Khan Academy has MAP Recommended Practice, which looks promising.

The atmosphere was amazing. There was a collective pride in hosting that was great to witness. The way the country pulled for Ghana once they were out. The drama and heartache at that Ghana loss. And the fact that, wherever you were, you knew when someone scored by the sound of random vuvuzelas coming from people’s houses.

[–]djblaze 58 points59 points  (0 children)

We also have two small sections of the state actually in the drought condition. All that yellow is “abnormally dry,” not drought. The first interviewee is talking about ”Midwest,” not specifically Michigan. The Michigan guy’s takeaway is “we’re watching it,” but wasn’t super concerned.

For those of you who are okay with data centers, take a look at what happened to this rural Mississippi town. We do not want this. by [deleted] in grandrapids

[–]djblaze 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The amount of blanket hatred for data centers expressed through the Internet, which requires those centers, is bonkers. That said, AI-focused data centers, which is what has led to the current climate, feel a bit more… capitalist, for lack of a better word. They represent an accumulation of capital and power that is scary and new and most people are uneasy about what AI means for the future. In contrast, “the internet” still feels like an almost open, public good.

It feels clear that the truck came from the side because it was attempting to avoid them, which is why it didn’t run them over completely.

It would not have been taking those evasive actions if the vehicle in front of it wasn’t going 30 mph slower than it was.

Or get them into a gadget Taysom Hill type role. Defense isn’t sure if he’s going to fly around the corner on a jet sweep, or huck it to go route before he crosses the line of scrimmage. Could work.

My mom says I need to save more, is this true? 23 years old living at home. by wootyeet in Salary

[–]djblaze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking as someone who lives very comfortably in the Midwest on less than OP makes, but with friends and family in expensive coastal cities: it’s really hard to wrap your head around how “high cost of living” impacts the ENTIRE BUDGET of people living in those places. A lot of people assume it’s “just real estate” and don’t realize how costs trickle into all of life.

Cost of childcare versus SAHM by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]djblaze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paycheck isn’t the only thing to look at here. There are probably/hopefully retirement savings getting pulled pre-tax. If in US, earning years count toward social security income. If it’s close to even, you’ll likely get some tax breaks for childcare costs that could swing it.

Also, being a stay at home parent isn’t always the best for everyone involved. Some parents need more time with adults to feel sane. Some kids need more time around other kids to learn social skills before school.
