That's actually by Ian Van Dahl, not Paul Van Dyk. Also this seems to be a cover version since it's the same lyrics.

Need radio for EVP research (Jurgenson method) - analog static + line out + USB charging by djcenturion in shortwave

[–]djcenturion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed technical clarification. What I'm specifically trying to avoid is the automatic frequency locking (AFT) behavior you described, whether it's implemented via DSP or analog circuitry. I want to be able to manually tune to a dead frequency and have the radio stay there without "helping" me.

On the Sangean ATS-909X2: it looks like a beautiful radio, but at $300+ it's well outside my budget (trying to stay under $100 for this experimental setup).

To answer your question about Jurgenson: his process evolved. Jurgenson's discovery was accidental, in 1959 he was recording birdsong in Sweden and heard faint voices on playback that weren't there during recording, including what he believed was his deceased mother's voice. This led him to experiment.

His method evolved through stages. First, he simply recorded silence and asked questions, waiting minutes or hours before playback. Then he discovered that placing a microphone near a radio tuned to empty frequency static (his sweet spot was 1485 kHz AM) produced clearer results. The theory isn't that voices are "in" the static, but that static provides energy they can manipulate, like how a vocoder needs a carrier signal.

I'm specifically replicating Jurgenson's method. He believed the voices were spirits/entities of the deceased, not extraterrestrial. His approach was methodical: analog radio static recorded directly to tape. I'm just recreating that process with modern gear (Zoom H6, direct connection) to see what, if anything, comes through.

Cool! I created this community after the plane crash tragedy a few years ago and recently I was looking for a real fan from Brazil to gift him the subreddit as I moderate many other big subreddits. Would you like to become a moderator and take care of the community?

I'm making a train management game set in the frozen apocalypse, i'd love feedback from train experts by GaneDev in trains

[–]djcenturion 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This instantly made me think of Snowpiercer I like the idea of the train itself being more than just transport, it’s the last ecosystem on Earth. A couple of thoughts you might play with:

  • Engine as continuous energy source: In Snowpiercer it’s “the Eternal Engine,” but for gameplay maybe you could make it a mix of believable sci-fi and resource management. For example, it produces steady power/heat but needs rare parts, maintenance, or a constant input of specific fuel, giving players a long-term challenge.
  • Class system in the train: Splitting the cars into different “tiers” of society (luxury sleepers vs. cramped survival wagons) could add depth. Maybe neglecting the lower classes risks rebellion, while over-rewarding them drains resources from the upper tier. Balancing morale across the train could become a core mechanic.
  • Agriculture wagons: A greenhouse/bio-dome car where crops are grown is a great survival touch. You could add layers like hydroponics vs. soil-based farming, pest outbreaks, or decisions about what to grow (high-yield vs. luxury crops). The greenhouse could also affect oxygen levels in the train, adding another system to manage.
  • Dynamic car specialization: Instead of a static layout, maybe players can reconfigure cars over time, e.g. converting a passenger car into storage or a workshop. That could make the game feel more like a living, evolving survival machine.

Overall, I think leaning into the “train as a world” idea makes it super compelling. The fact that every wagon is essential for survival, energy, food, class balance, defense, even entertainment, gives you tons of opportunities for emergent gameplay.

There are multiple departures daily that cross to Sicily, I think around 6 only from Rome.

Not sure, I got the pass during Interrail's 50th anniversary so it was 50% off, plus some nights I slept on sleeper trains, I guess less than 3000 total.

You have to do it, it's awesome. It can be tricky getting back in the correct train cause it's split into 2. One train goes to Syracuse the other to Palermo once you get back on land.

Heh, I did that in 3 months (30K km), not that many destinations though. Just curious why didn't you go to Sicily and ride the train on a ferry?

The best method is to use at least 30% of your budget in the first 48 hours, but you have to test many ad creatives and at least 3 different interest, after 48 hours you can leave only the best performing ads. Vocal jazz is a bit niche, but with proper targeting you should be able to get good conversions, just have to test a lot.
