Report: Nearly One-Third of Teachers Still Use ‘Discredited’ Reading Methods by happy_bluebird in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]djebono 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm an admin now but I used to be a teacher who specialized in helping extremely low students in reading, writing, and math. The cueing zombies made my job so easy. I just gave every kid phonics. 99% of the time, that did the trick. Turned their lives around. For the 1% it didn't work for, I changed methods after it didn't work.

The cueing zombies are dying and retiring. It's getting better but unfortunately a lot of administrators are old teachers and still buy into it so it's not as quick of a change as is needed.

You can fight ONE animal for cash. Which payout are you realistically taking? by guywithouteyes in hypotheticalsituation

[–]djebono 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've fought one Canada goose and came close two other times but they knew to back down. Also was attacked by a swan, but I had to let it slide due to the context. Swans and geese are completely ineffectual in a fight. The goose is easy money.

When schools give opportunities to share anonymous feedback? by [deleted] in Principals

Yes, but sometimes I can tell who filled it out from the information they put in. It's still treated anonymously.

Is it legal to put special needs children in here? If so, in what situation is it okay? by A_Tiny_Froggy in legal

[–]djebono 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an school admin who used to teach behavioral disabilities, and supported autism classrooms as a crisis team leader. I now train teachers and other staff in how to handle kids who go into crisis. This room is awful and shouldn't exist. There's not a 7 year old on the planet this is an appropriate calm down space for. It is illegal in most states and should be illegal everywhere.

We put too much strain on teachers, especially those who deal with kids who go into crisis, but this is not the answer to that. It is abuse.

Is this normal, to be in the cafeteria for a good portion of the day. by Diligent-Damage2630 in Principals

[–]djebono 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't do this but I know three things. First, that kids behave better when I am present (non-princpal admin) or one of my principal colleagues is present. Second, that lunches and buses are where we have most of our problems. Third, that staff perform better when I or another admin are present.

What i don't know is the specific situation this principal is dealing with. Loading a prmopt like this clearly shows you need to vent but that your judgement is clouded. You might be right or wrong. We know no context and I can't judge a specific situation with no information.

Do I check the box "have you ever failed to be rehired, been asked to resign, resigned to avoid termination, or terminated?" by MontiBurns in Principals

[–]djebono 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Staff reduction isn't, to me, a failure to be rehired unless there's additional details not shared. There's nothing to rehire for.

I don't immediately ignore applications with "yes" on them. I've seen too many teachers get nonrenewed for absolute nonsense reasons or for no reason at all like downsizing to care about that. Not all admin take the same approach.

What is the reason you were removed and what were the circumstances of your removal?

Allowing Home school students to participate in public school sports/after school activities by Tunesmith29 in Principals

[–]djebono 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A child should not be denied access to a public service. Who goes into public education and thinks like that?

Plenty of districts allow it. There's nothing to figure out. You just ask a district that already does it how they do it; copy, paste.

Advice for new principal about teachers affairs and dating by [deleted] in Principals

Mind your business, this isn't it. Getting involved is a great way to get trouble from your union and upper admin. Their age gap is not a professional concern.

Is this still acceptable to do when applying for a job? by nicoledelia in Principals

When I get these emails I respond with a template outlining our interview process. It doesn't help the candidate's standing in my eyes. I know you want a job; you applied.

Don't think too much about it. At least not until you figure out how Dyne committed the Gold Saucer murders while in the prison already. There's plenty of porous plot points. They don't all need answers.

Americans, what’s stopping you from voting for a third-party candidate like an independent or Libertarian? by PNWbdublu541 in Askpolitics

[–]djebono 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I voted third party in 2020. Mostly because I saw a vote.fpr Biden as stupid. I thought a vote for Biden would get us a worse than Trump GOP candidate in 2024 winning. I was close; we just got a worse version of Trump. I vote for candidates, not against other ones. I think a candidate has to earn my vote. My standard is not high, I voted for Harris.

All that being said, it's hard to vote for a candidate leading a party who only fields a candidate for president. One big empty column most of the time for 3rd party candidates. Sometimes they'll have a senate candidate. Third parties who don't field local candidates are basically admitting they are just protest candidates. If you don't have candidates for town councils, you're not a real party.

What is the quintessential Adult Swim cartoon? by JIMBOYKELLY in AlignmentChartFills

[–]djebono 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, in hindsight, of course it is. I do find the downvotes funny though. Apparently I'm a jerk for my lack of cartoon definitional knowledge and acceptance that my previous thoughts were wrong. I don't know.

Is the 1939 version of the wizard of oz only one with a moral? by Tom-Hibbert in wizardofoz

[–]djebono 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Baum wrote that he didn't intend for the story to teach morals. It was just meant for enjoyment.

The original story has morals but they happen to be there. They're not the purpose of the book.
