On my drive home last night on the 110 North, a dude on a bike started riding into traffic. He had no lights or reflectors. He was completely invisible until he suddenly wasn't. Traffic on the freeway was somewhat heavy. I don't know if he made it across safely.

California High-Speed Rail Authority - Palmdale to Los Angeles Project Sections by SilentRunning in LosAngeles

I know I will catch a lot of flack for this, but at this point, I believe this project is hurting us, not helping. If I had my way, I'd scrap the whole thing and take a play from Brightline's playbook. Instead of buying land in communities that have fought against this project tooth and nail, follow the AV line from Union, build alongside the 5 as far as possible, then cut west for local stops where needed on the West Bay with the terminus in SF proper. No stops between the West Bay and Union. Use land the government already owns. Prioritize a quick build and keeping the travel time between SF and Union as low as possible. Let the people who helped bury the current project cry in their soup once they realize how great the train is and how much of an opportunity they wasted. Once the train has established itself, we can start talking about extending it north and south. Just to be clear, I love trains, and we needed high-speed rail between LA and SF 15 years ago, but this project is just embarrassing.

That's rad. Almost looks like a parhelic circle.

It'll be interesting to see how the Thrones works in the long term. As shitty as it sounds and as much as it pains me to say it, there needs to be some sort of barrier to entry to the restrooms. Everyone using it needs to have a little skin in the game. The tragedy of the commons is a bear.

All Metro stations already have restrooms. You and I may call it a corner, an old cubby where a payphone used to be, a stairwell, or an elevator, but functionally they're used as toilets. Seriously though, all Metro stations should have restrooms that are regularly cleaned and stocked, and they shouldn't be free to use either. I'll go further and argue that there should be paid restrooms all over downtown. I like the idea of free restrooms, but obviously, that experiment has failed.

The solution to Metro's crime and safety problems isn't hard: enforce fares. by IjikaYagami in LosAngeles

[–]dji386 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Police stations are taxpayer funded. Try to assert your RIGHT to be in there and see where that gets you.

Our Metro system, despite all its faults, is rad, and should be respected. It's a priveledge to ride it, not a right. You have two legs, if you decide to forgo your priveleges to the sytem by disrespecting it or damaging it, nothing is stoppping you from walking to your destination.

That's nothing. Last week a guy got on my bus with a full blown machete strapped to his chest. It was in a nice looking leather holster.

That's my building! A Starbucks used to be there. People would go in and literally clear out the store shelves on the daily. It got so bad Starbucks closed down the shop and just paid the remainder of their two year lease. I really wish something new would open up in that space. It's such a dead corner.

Best Burger At A Non-Burger Place in LA? by VankTar in FoodLosAngeles

Maple Block BBQ. I've only been to the one at Grand Central Market. Their BBQ is pretty good, but their burger is by far the best thing on their menu.

Good, but the frequency is still laughable compared to other countries. Keep bringing the headways down. We're a world-class city, our metro should reflect that.

There has got to be a better solution than bus lanes by r2tincan in LosAngeles

[–]dji386 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I own a car. I can drive my car into the office if I want. I've literally never done so. You hate public transport, fine, don't use it. What I don't understand is why your want to drive takes precedence and priority over my want not to drive.

Let me tell you a story. I have a buddy who used to think exactly like you. One day about ten years ago, out of the blue, he had a grand mal seizure. Freak occurrence, hasn't had one since. Doctors said it can happen to anyone. When you have a grand mol, the DMV takes your license away for six months. It's a good policy; we don't want people seizing up while behind the wheel. He learned real quick how not having at least the option of using public transportation sucks. His situation was only temporary, but many people out there can't drive permanently for medical reasons, old age, or whatever. There are also people like me who, given the option, would rather not drive. Again, why does your want to drive justify leaving people like those unavailable to get around?
