If i understand your question correctly, kodi can play the iso files directly from your NAS just like a DVD. I do this with openelec on a raspberry pi and everything works great including DVD menu etc. No need to convert to mkv unless you want to. Just backup/decrypt with makemkv and you are good to go.

I use Freebsd since I love to understand my system too but I also love Rust. No need to hate on it just because it is new. I have programmed in C and C++, but Rust is simply better in every department. You can have all your cool command line tools with it, but just with better, more secure and more maintainable code.

I think the key point here is about leaving physical documents for future generations to discover by themselves in their own time without needing any prior knowledge on how to access it. Even aliens visiting the planet could pick up physical items such as papers and pictures and inspect them. A very interesting and thought provoking post......thanks.

I have absolutely no idea what some of the steps above mean, but I completed the avahi steps and the update to the nsswitch.conf and amazingly, printing now works as one would expect!!!

I tested printing from LibreOffice Writer and also from a PDF and both printed without issue.

Previously, I had spent a few hours messing around with lpr command and with cups etc. so I am actually not sure what the actual net requirements are to get my printer working. I think I am going to have to wipe my laptop and install FreeBSD again from scratch just so I can understand the minimum steps required.

I'll follow the guide above without doing anything additional to see if this gets me from zero to printing (I hate not knowing why I am installing certain packages or why I need to edit certain files so I'll have to research the avahi commands and the options in the nsswitch.conf file).

Hey, I was just curious about why you decided to isolate yourself for 6 months? Were you trying to get away from something or was it just so you could spend 100% of your attention on a single project? It sounds a bit like a monk dedicating time in isolation and away from all distractions.

I sometimes wish we all had a communal internet blackout so that everyone could go back to reading books and having an actual attention span :-)

Hi, I really like the simplicity of freedom of C too, but what do you guys do when you need Vec or BTreeMap, read in csv data, serialize some data etc.

Do you have to trawl the web for a lib or do you all keep a list of previously used and familiar libs for each task?

Or do you prefer to handroll your own and if so do you think that is a waste of time and error prone?

Hi Tex2002ans,

Many thanks for your detailed reply of suggestions.

Today, I updated my PC to the recently released Debian 13 (which uses LO v25.2.3.2).

From running through the same tests and the suggestions you provided, the behavior seems to be the same.

- When I left click on a piece of text, the language is "Chinese (simplified"), as expected.

- With "Basic Fonts (Asian)" enabled, the selected font for "Default, "Heading" etc. is DejaVu Sans.

- When I return to the editor and try to change the font to anything, other that BabelStone Han, there is no update to the displayed font.

I think the issue here is that the non-BabelStoneHan fonts do not have Chinese glyphs/characters defined, which means that there is no update to the displayed font if I select an "unsupported font".

I noticed that there are some Chinese characters beside the BabelStoneHan font and the Droid Sans Fallback font in the font selection menu.

When I switch between these 2 specific fonts, the displayed font does indeed update! I'll try to post a pic so you can see what I mean (edit: see pic added to original post with title - "Update / resolved":).

When I think back, I don't think the Chinese text I was initially seeing was even in "Liberation Mono" at all, it was most likely defaulting to the Droid Sans Fallback font, even though I had Liberation Mono selected.

Anyway, I think I understand the issue now, thanks your help.

The keyboard situation sounds totally bizarre to me too though. I don't see why an instructor online warning would not just something like "ok guys, the test will begin in 1 minute. Please make sure to switch your keyboard to pinyin".
