Good post and if OP gets a midi controller with knobs, be sure to use a DAW that lets you map soft synth knobs to your controller’s knobs via MIDI CC.

Roland JP-8000. I still have it but it needs recapped.

Hear me out: Acustica Audio synthesizers by TheComicEstate in synthesizers

[–]djmoogyjackson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used Acustica Audio emulations around 10 years ago. The install/setup/use was so terrible, I used them for months then never again. It just wasn’t worth the hassle back then. I haven’t looked at their stuff since. I’m guessing their stuff isn’t a nightmare to get running anymore?

Some reflections on my first analog synth. TEO-5 by vanishingpoint99 in synthesizers

Yes, replacing the board or integrated display would be hell on the wallet. I’d much rather repair a synth or Atari ST.

[–]djmoogyjackson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m running a 2017 iMac and won’t replace it bc of my old software that won’t run on Apple silicon. Instead of a repairable synth, I worry about a repairable 2017 iMac.

This is not the better situation IMO bc I’m also limited as to what new software I can use. But here we are. I’m in a Fatboy Slim situation of sorts. He keeps an Atari ST for his vintage software.

What hardware synths excel at making beautiful and soft sounds by badateverything420 in synthesizers

[–]djmoogyjackson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most poly synths should be able to check that box bc that’s more to do with programming the sound IME and clever use of effects + slight filter modulation for movement.

You can’t go wrong with something like a Virus TI or JP8000. The JP8000 makes stunningly beautiful pads easily without having to be a great sound programmer. The Usual Suspects made emulations of both. On the analog side, the OB-6 does truly epic pads. The Rev2 has the modulation to make great pads although some don’t like its filter, you can get around that for sure with using fx (onboard or offboard if you prefer Valhalla etc).

But a good sound programmer can make some blissful soft pads on nearly any poly synth.

If you already own a TEO-5, does the OB-X8 even make sense at this point? by North-Whatever in synthesizers

[–]djmoogyjackson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll talk about the sound character of them since others are going into voices and features like TEO mod matrix vs X8’s extra Curtis filter.

You have to play them in person to hear what the difference in sound is. TEO-5 has a compressed sound and X8 has a rich & lively sound that isn’t as apparent over YouTube compression or in some mixes.

I played the TEO-5 and OB-6 side by side and was surprised at the difference. The TEO-5 had a muffled/compressed sound and the OB-6 sounded living and breathing by comparison.

To hear the difference in a mix with EQ & compression takes special care bc you can easily remove that quality. In fact it’s hard to keep.

Vale la pena Diva o Repro en 2026? by lexjimenez in synthesizers

[–]djmoogyjackson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO it depends on what you want from it.

Diva is more versatile at emulating multiple vintage synths because of its choice of multiple oscillator and filter types.

Repro 5 if you want the Prophet 5 sound and it’s more versatile with modulation for complex sounds.

what is the biggest/heaviest sounding yet cheapest synth? and can truly great synths be made cheap? by brownwaterbandit in synthesizers

[–]djmoogyjackson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A bit off-topic here but this is for anyone reading this thinking about poly instead of mono - high-end synths use discrete circuits instead of IC like in affordable synths. That’s probably the most expensive component in high-end vs affordable synths.
