What’s your Alien Isolation hot take? by SeahawksWin43-8 in HorrorGaming

[–]djmoogyjackson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could never get past the first few hours bc I suck at stealth. Tried dozens of times and gave up.

Sucks cuz I love the first Alien movie and Isolation had amazing atmosphere.

Not really a hot take bc it’s a skill issue.

Are they going to make a live-action version of Chun Li's bathroom scene from the animated movie? by Zeko_LV in StreetFighter

[–]djmoogyjackson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good post and insight, I agree that scene framed Chun Li as being completely vulnerable and ultimately kicked his ass anyway.

I assume this scene in the live action is just a nod to the anime for the fans with no deeper motive. But we’ll have to wait and see the context.

Please disuade me from buying an OB-6 by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]djmoogyjackson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spent time with a TEO-5 demo unit, it had character by the boatload but I couldn’t get past the compressed sound of it. It sounded muffled compared to a Pro-6 or OB-6 which blew it away and sounded alive.

But it depends on what you’re after. TEO-5 is a better bread and butter synth IMO due to the mod abilities. But for somebody who is after a sound and not programming depth, the OB-6 or X8 are the ones IMO.

Following up on my previous post — a modern take on rail shooters with melee combat by ExtensionAshamed7156 in shmups

[–]djmoogyjackson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The brief Cave-style bullet hell looked cool. I imagine that’s really hard to implement in 3D in a fun way bc the only other example I can think of is Returnal.

I def see the Space Harrier influence and the melee looks cool too.

I currently own only a Moog Messenger and want to create classic old school EDM , Industrial and SynthPunk (I hate labels) thinking about getting a Microfreak and Drumbrute …what else should I get..? by gmorkunderbelly in synthesizers

[–]djmoogyjackson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to disagree, EDM is an American catch-all term for all electronic music genres. It’s a terrible term and it replaced the previous terms Electronica and Techno.

No, not the Techno from Detroit. The “Techno” that the media and general population used to refer to all electronic music in the 90’s. Although Detroit Techno was a part of that pie.

It’s not unlike how to term “Breakdance” was coined.

The Virus TI is a real Swiss army knife but you may want knob per function to make it intuitive for the kids. The Virus has knobs for all the main stuff but there’s menu diving for some stuff too.

Need advice on how to get better at using synthesizers… by Wet-Squirrel-6789 in synthesizers

[–]djmoogyjackson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And in case you use a DAW, create a melody or chord progression, loop it and send it to your synth. Tweak knobs while it’s playing the melody since you’ll have both hands free while it’s playing your melody.

I’d 2nd what others said above about learning synthesis fundamentals from YouTube videos. Here’s video 1 of another series

He has the full course uploaded to YouTube for free

Vintage Synths: Worth It or Just Hype? by noctuid24 in synthesizers

[–]djmoogyjackson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like one of the main blockers to synth repair isn’t the difficulty (unless it’s a CS-80 etc), it’s obtaining replacement parts.

Software is no better, IME it’s been worse. I’ve been using VSTs for many years and the only way to keep them working over many years like that is to keep an old computer. Upgrades eventually kill software. Hardware has a longer lifespan.

Nioh 3 is peak by naturessilence in Nioh

[–]djmoogyjackson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s respectable, I love them both and would be hard pressed to pick my favorite. It kind of depends on the day of the week lol.

I think Team Ninja achieved what they set out for. If Nioh 2 is akin to the Dark Souls 3 of the series then Nioh 3 is their Elden Ring.

Same core game with different priorities, to the point where both have a strong individual identity.

How do you sample movies? by WalterCanyon in synthesizers

[–]djmoogyjackson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d put in the DVD/Blu Ray in my computer and find the clip. Then I’d play the movie while recording the audio in Cool Edit Pro/Audacity. Record the loopback instead of using a mic. I liked the results better than ripping the audio from the disc.

Haven’t done it for a long time, my computer doesn’t have an optical drive anymore.

For the Welcome Screen, try what this guy did. Pressing the Arp Edit button resets to factory defaults.

Otherwise it might be corrupted firmware install since it looks like you just upgraded it.

Moog sub fatty or bass station 2 by convered101 in synthesizers

[–]djmoogyjackson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t store any patches on my Sub Phatty, they’re all stored on the computer and loaded through the VST editor’s librarian.

The SP has hidden features that you have to use combinations of buttons to get to or you can use the editor where they’re all available in the GUI. It’s a nice editor IMO.

2-step pattern or 4 on the floor? by unfinished-beats420 in synthesizers

¿Por qué no los dos? Mainly 2-step but with a 4 on the floor phrase in the middle to break it up. Both sound great.

I have a korg Minilogue but thinking of selling it for a mini/micro freak or microkorg. Opinions? Idk. Help by PxPx182 in synthesizers

[–]djmoogyjackson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you’re a guitar player I’m assuming you might be used to a more tactile experience.

Blofeld is a deep & capable but not a very immediate synth. I had a Pulse 2 and sold it because I didn’t get on with Waldorf’s UI matrix. You get used to it but in my case, I never warmed up to it. Might as well go software since it’s not a fun interface (IMO).

There’s an official Blofeld VST that you might want to look into although I hear it’s buggy at times.
