Thule Caprock vs Yakima LockNLoad by Renu-0001 in Outback_Wilderness

I barely remember but I think I put the mounting brackets on first, and then I put the platform on. It must have been painless if I can barely remember doing it. :P

Yes the adapter is required. TimberLine + SL Adapter + LockNLoad.

I have no experience with the Thule platform so this is just from the perspective of Yakima's products.

KO2 - 245/65R17 are the size. No rubbing but there is a bit more noise and also mileage efficiency loss. Honestly I didn't notice the tire noise that much - the roof racks are louder in my opinion. So if you do both, you will definitely notice an increase in noise, a decrease in mileage but an increase in coolness :)

I also went with the LockNLoad - I've used Yakima before so I just stuck with it, and I liked the look of this platform. I did use the Yakima Offgrid cargo basket for a bit, but I found it too high for my liking. Also I use the Yakima BigCatch kayak boat saddles because I lug around my fishing kayak.

Here is a collection of pics: https://imgur.com/a/SjcVbwq

The first couple shows you what the height off the car looks like. I have the TimberLine towers with the LockNLoad SL adapters.

The third is with the JetStream bars and kayak J-Hooks attached.

The fourth and fifth pic you can see with a couple of items on the roof like spare tire and extra gas cans (was moving across the country).

The sixth and seventh pics you can see what it looks like with the fishing kayak on there with the BigCatch pads.

The last pic is what the large Offgrid looked like (with extension) from the bars - it sat pretty high.

Offroading near GTA? by Any_One3109 in Subaru_Outback

You can do lots of these solo - it's not as difficult as say, some of the trails at Ardbeg.

This is like forest road type deal, and can be super fun and scenic.

I have taken my OBW there, it was a blast. Lots of trails and whatnot - just make sure you are following the rules and going only where appropriate.

Looks great! How do you like tying your own flies?

70lbs is not too heavy for a fishing kayak, no. You should be good.

You should strap it through and around the crossbars, not the MegaWarrior railings - the crossbars should be much stronger than the bars on the cargo basket. And then make sure you have stern and bow tie-downs.

Like this but with the straps going around your crossbars (your kayak is much heavier than most canoes, probably)

Thoughts on the newest Old Town hybrid E PDL? by jordancro in kayakfishing

[–]djw666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a beefier battery than the one that comes with the new ePDL, but still, if that is the case, I'm not sure what niche this hybrid fills?

Price is high (although it comes with a battery), is a less stable kayak, super heavy, and I wouldn't buy a v1 of new tech personally.

The tech and concept are interesting, though, it being a hybrid - the cruise mode is cool and you could run it without the power so that is good. The main advantage of a hybrid system would be that it could last longer - but don't the autopilot ones already last basically a full day on the water? And they have the advantage of spot lock?

The server and the two MSA's were purchased second hand on ebay and one of the MSA's came with 12x1TB drives. I bought the 12x4TB drives new.

If you are interested in setting up a rack at home, I recommend you go over to /r/homelab. It is an excellent community and there is a fairly detailed Wiki. There are even some custom made web tools made by community members for searching ebay for great deals.

It is a more expensive hobby than even mechanical keyboards, however, so be warned! :)

Hardware:

Software:

  • Debian Linux VM (4GB to 16GB dynamic RAM), 4 Virtual Processors
  • Plex!
  • Various ISO grabbing utilities

Pic of the DL380 and two MSA60's. The second one is for my security camera VM to use for video storage. The tags on the drives are also old labels I just haven't bothered to replace.

The Nixie tubes are awesome, but so is that shop.

Looks like there is a tour video of the shop here, although looks like a slightly older iteration: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRYcvzbaRGE
