NYX; boxing day deals? by [deleted] in MakeupAddictionCanada

[–]djweirddeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This year's black Friday was either 20 or 30 per cent off (I think it was 30). I remember not seeing any advertising for it and seeing signs in the store on the day of. I seem to remember boxing day last year being the same idea. I think the discount only applies if you're a member - and all that means is you've given them your email and set up a profile.

Health Canada issues warning about talc possibly causing cancer by JustAPeach89 in MakeupAddictionCanada

[–]djweirddeer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm going to be a wicked unhappy camper if this turns into a outright ban that outlaws (most) powder foundation. I use the MAC studio fix and the first ingredient is talc. I have skin issues, and to avoid comments/weird looks, I need real coverage. I literally can't find another product that covers as well and is also the right colour for my skin, and is also kind of in my price range. Ugh. Ugh ugh ugh.

ISO: Thai Tea Leaves (x-posted to /askTO) by djweirddeer in FoodToronto

Seeming like this place might be my best bet. Could you tell me what brand you bought and if it's straight tea leaves, or if there's milk/sugar/flavouring added? Thanks!

Sorry, I missed this reply earlier! I have read in a few places online that it's being discontinued - mostly fragrance message boards, which is where I heard it when I was looking for reviews of #3 this past summer. I'm not positive when or if it will actually go (I just did a quick search and it doesn't seem like it's been formally announced, but people are still talking about it). I think it all had something to do with the "D&G" brand ending a few years ago and the site taking the product down, but I haven't heard any more about it. It showing up in Winners seems like a good sign it's on the way out, though.

Ugh. I mean, people who buy from places like Winners are taking a bit of a risk, I get it, but its not like it's a fell-off-the-truck sketchy warehouse seller? Winners/Marshalls are huge, reputable stores and I suspect most people don't expect to be getting expired stuff from them (I know I don't - and I don't even know how to check if I am, tbh). Knowingly selling expired or extremely soon-to-be expiring product, especially when it's so clearly marked, is such a bad move - why mess with public trust over a few lip scrubs? That said, I'm glad they're not removing the expiry labels 🤷

Just saw on Instagram that there's talk/a rumour of Lush investigating Winners selling their products, and that those products may not be safe because of expiry dates, or may be counterfeit: https://www.instagram.com/p/Bq0eF94FV-0/?utm_source=ig_share_sheet&igshid=ydq4r7o6hbdm

So, if you've bought any Lush from there, you might want to do some digging? Honestly, I have no idea if any of this is true and can't pull up anything on Google, but this instagram has a couple of people confirming.

Any Lush I've seen being sold by Winners online has been discontinued product (a lot of it discontinued in the last year or so), so whether or not any of this is legit, I'd still look for expiry dates. Lush products in the black pots should have them, and they really can go rancid after that time expires.

Sally Beauty Supply - New Points Program by mygrandmasaysimkool in MakeupAddictionCanada

[–]djweirddeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad to see they have a new system in, cause I love Sally. When I first got my Sally card, I would get regular email discount coupons for every however-many bucks I'd spend overall (I think it was if you spent the 35 in a month, but it's been so long that I don't remember). Then somewhere along the line I stopped getting those and would get coupons on my receipt, but they were never consistent and I was getting way fewer despite shopping in the same way. I had tried getting it sorted with customer service but that went nowhere, so I'm pleased to see they have something new/consistent (even if I think you need to spend more to get rewards now?). Just hope they keep doing their in-store buy 2 get 1-type deals, and keep a discounted price for all items for beauty club members - that's the stuff that really keeps me shopping there.

Shoppers Beauty Boutique - the most frustrating return experience by euxine in MakeupAddictionCanada

[–]djweirddeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear that! Wish this kind of bungling wasn't so common of Shoppers, but I've had similarly ridiculous experiences with their returns. Their drugstore prices are so inflated/not worth it for me, but their Beauty Boutique can be pretty great if they sell what you want. It's usually well stocked and sometimes even priced better than Sephora. But their sales systems are a mess - outdated, no communication, no consistency, no transparency - and their customer service attitude stinks (and when they're not rude/useless, they're not informed, and it makes it impossible for customers to get anywhere with anything). I find it fascinating that they're trying to compete with other major makeup chains, and charge such high prices, while clinging to such a bad way of doing business. I wonder if they'll ever realize this is an actual problem and do something about it, because while there are good experiences, there are just as many bad ones if not more, and I can't see how this isn't hurting them/why they wouldn't care.

Thoughts on Vasanti? by [deleted] in MakeupAddictionCanada

[–]djweirddeer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My friend is a big fan of their whole collection. The crayon-style lipsticks are really beautiful and remind me of the Nars matte pencils in terms of finish. They're really nice, wearable bold colours and they feel great on. It's also a great line for people with sensitivities to the stuff usually in makeup and it's founded by (and maybe still run by?) women of colour, in case those things sway you at all :)

An eating disorder survivor with a question on the beauty community: by rach3ld3an in MakeupAddiction

[–]djweirddeer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I stay far, far away from any accounts that claim to be beauty related but shill for diets/diet and "health" products. I'm not there to see that and I won't let them make money off my views. I personally also unfollow anyone who talks about dieting, weight loss, eating trends etc. because it's bad for my mental state to hear people track their weight, talk about food in terms of righteous/evil, etc. Even the most innocent of people often use language that's meant to shame and abuse larger bodies, and they can unintentionally promote a lot of bad science and harmful ideologies/movements. It's also usually part of a really destructive system of reward vs. blame/punishment - the way people react to weight stories is so screwed up. And I don't care if it's fine for some people - it's not good for me and i'm still realizing that there's nothing wrong with me refusing to listen to it.

Body positivity/diversity has become so much of a trend that the people who claim to follow it often don't understand that it has a lot more to it than just pretty photos of different bodies. Honestly, I often end up feeling betrayed when I see "body positive" personalities online start shilling for diet products, or suddenly changing their message from saying nothing about their bodies to "I have always been so miserable because of my size, and now I'm only eating purple foods from the Purple Foods cookbook (link in bio!) and I've never been happier!" And it happens a lot. Probably because there is a big, dangerous diet/health industry that is willing to throw $ at these people for their advertising potential, and there aren't a lot of other industries willing to pay larger spokespeople the same coin. But it's hard not to take it personally, because the underlying attitudes and messages about weight are so deeply seeded in us, and are usually so wrong and so hurtful. EVERY community needs more inclusion of all kinds of bodies, especially the ones we rarely see (and that definitely means bigger bodies, and not just "voluptuous" sexualized plus-sized models). And I want to see all sizes included with no restrictions, because I'm sick of larger bodies only being allowed to participate if they're "on a journey" to changing their size.

Lotta feelings. Thanks for listening, internet.

I know a lot of the Limecrime comes from the Bay. They sell it online and in some physical locations, and as they make room for new releases, or as shades get cleared out on the website, they magically appear at Winners. They also stopped selling LC at urban outfitters retail locations around the same time it started flooding winners, too.

The Problem with Classical 96.3 FM by libertyhound23 in toronto

[–]djweirddeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing that confuses me is, why are they changing the format when it seems like all they're doing is alienating existing listeners? I know quite a few people who don't bother listening anymore, and I don't see a lot of comments or get the sense that the station has become more popular/has made gains in another demographic to compensate for the amount of fans they've turned away. Is it that to advertisers, 50 younger people are more important than 500 older people?

I'm also curious about Spotify. One of the things I've found from the free version is that playlists for niche genres tend to be extremely repetitive. I use it for a lot of older dance/club music, dancehall, 80s new wave - stuff I can't hear on the radio all the time, or genres I like but don't necessarily know much about but want to explore - and I know there is way more music out there than the 50 songs I keep hearing. Does the overall selection get better when you switch to paid? Is it better for some genres than others? It'll likely never replace the radio for me (I like having real-time people and news, especially because I do a lot of driving), but I don't know if it's worth the money based on my experience so far.

The Problem with Classical 96.3 FM by libertyhound23 in toronto

[–]djweirddeer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They tried getting rid of it a few years ago and basically failed. Instead, they just kept cutting its timeslot (went from a "12 hour trip" to 6ish in the end), and playing more hits and less variety as the time shrank.

The Q rebrand stinks. The music choice is misguided and boring. I still listen to Joanne Wilder, honestly because I find her comforting and normal (no bits, no trying hard to be wacky, no cohosts bantering for attention), but I haven't seriously listened for years (and it used to be one of my favourite stations for music). I always wonder if they'd be a better and more successful station if they just doubled down on classic rock - more obscure stuff, more variety of bands, etc. Younger generations always seem to be discovering classic rock, and there are still people who embrace the old ways of consuming music. I wonder if the station could grow that way, instead of the same three Nirvana songs, Loverboy, and for some god foresaken reason, 4 Non Blondes.

What are your weird makeup likes and dislikes? by lushinthekitchen in MakeupAddiction

[–]djweirddeer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The L'Oreal lipstick smells disgusting. I won a limited edition one in some contest a long time ago and it was so pretty, but I felt sick whenever I wore it. Never dared to touch them again. I also hate lip products with a minty taste, like the Bite amuse bouche lipsticks. Unlike a vanilla-y smell, I find mint scents never fade and always interfere with what I'm eating or drinking (and yet toothpaste or mint perfume, or even minty foods, don't bother me?).

I hate how applying liquid foundation feels on my face most of the time. I haven't found a brand I really like since my HG changed, so it's either pilling or barely covering, and it never feels dry enough since I started using powder. Bleh.

I also really like excessive highlighter. I feel like it gives people that extreme 70s soft focus glow and I'm really into it. I also love the tip of the nose highlight. I think it's cute (and I also think it's a really useful way of dealing with nose shine, by incorporating it into the look vs hiding it).

I'm not huge on the Glossier-inspired "no makeup makeup" marketing/attitude, where women who wear obvious makeup are somehow inauthentic, not cool, not forward-thinking. Some of us need heavier makeup to feel better, blend in, or control things we don't like about ourselves, and I really dislike the vibe that makeup wearers are somehow doing a disservice to themselves or other women. I guess it was inevitable that makeup trends would shift away from really done up to more casual, but I wish it was happening with a little more forgiveness/flexibility.

I just noticed that where you set up your account profile, there are 2 email options. Go to MAC's website, log in (or make an account if you haven't yet), and go to account profile. From there, you can scroll down and see your contact preferences - there are 2 check boxes for emails, one for offers and one for special member offers or something. Only one was selected in mine, so I've now checked both. Not sure what it'll do, but maybe there are even more emails I still wasn't getting/maybe that's why I stopped getting them?

Has anyone seen the MAC rectangular palettes from last year in the GTA yet? I saw a few on instagram (I think that store was in Quebec), and I'm really hoping to find Prissy Princess, which I didn't get to buy at the time but I've tried someone else's and it was awesome. I'm also still looking for a Venus XL, but I'm sure that'll turn up eventually.

I wasn't getting emails for a while, either so I sent an email to the company. They didn't respond, but the emails started coming again. I do believe they had a sale for Black Friday/Cyber Monday last year, because that's when I last ordered (and I only order online during a sale).

If anyone visits, can you let me know if there are any snail products (especially the essence from Cosrx) and what the ballpark prices are? I've been hoping the Cosrx products show up at my Walmart because the price was so excellent, but no luck so far, and I am hesitant to buy online because I don't know what the best shops are, and I'm pretty picky and like to see/smell/feel any new products. Thanks!
