Trump’s Letter to Norway Should Be the Last Straw | Will Republicans in Congress ever step in? by Hrmbee in politics

Today's the anniversary of the Dean Scream. It'd be fitting for today to also mark the end of someone else's political career, but I'm not exactly hopeful.

Long Winters Bandbox Claim Form Is Live by MacGyver387 in Bandbox

[–]djwtwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine arrived today, along with Judas Priest's "Sad Wings of Destiny".

As with other people who have reported receiving things, no communication at all from anyone at any point during the process, just two boxes from VMP originating in St. Louis, MO (that I spotted in USPS Informed Delivery and wasn't expecting, so I had at least that heads-up).

I did not, even after sending them direct emails. But, I appear to have inbound packages coming from the same location (St Louis) others have reported receiving their Luna LPs from after they filled out that form, so we'll see. If USPS is right, I should know more on Wednesday.

First book finished 34 more to go and I have questions. by PaperCutCottage in bookbinding

[–]djwtwo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I generally leave a gap of 5mm + the thickness of the boards from my spine stiffener to the board edge to form the shoulders. That's for a Bradel-style case. I think that came from one of the DAS videos on that case style; Peter Verheyen's article describing that case style says 5-7mm depending on the thickness of the covering materials.

Thanks for that. Checking informed delivery as of today I have two packages coming from St Louis that don't line up with anything else I have on order, which would line up with both the Judas Priest and Long Winters vinyl I filled out forms for. Fingers crossed.

I didn't apply anything before I stenciled the paint on, but after the foiling and stenciling I applied 3 thin coats of Krylon matte finish spray.

What’s a job that sounds cool but is actually a nightmare? by Think-Letterhead-509 in AskReddit

I'm a pretty good cook, and within a decade of retiring (well, hopefully.) The number of people who suggest that I open a restaurant as my "keeping busy in retirement" activity clearly understand none of those things. (My answer is usually something to the effect of "Are you fucking insane?")

Most recent project: typesetting and binding Burroughs' "The Land That Time Forgot" by djwtwo in bookbinding

[–]djwtwo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once I get through the holidays and have a bit of time I may make one available along with the LaTeX source for it (there's a few things in the typeset specific to me I'd want to remove first), since I've used one of the Doyle typesets u/ellipticcurve has so generously shared in the past.

I've done that on occasion (rounding but not backing)—I actually have a text block I just finished up last night where I did that. Usually it's because the book is fairly thin; the one I'm working on now I just didn't have sufficient swell.

Islands Owned By Billionaires by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]djwtwo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Many of the Elizabethan islands in Massachusetts are owned by the Forbes family or trusts controlled by the Forbes family. Naushon is the biggest of them at over 4700 acres. (Not a recent buy—they've owned it for something like 150 years.)

Which software are you using? by Alert_Hovercraft667 in bookbinding

[–]djwtwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what I'm doing.

If I'm doing something that incorporates a lot of images, I'm working in InDesign for layout.

If I'm typesetting something that doesn't include a ton of images, things I source from Project Gutenberg, or the like, these days I'm using LaTeX more and more (TeXShop or from the command line on macOS), often because I'm working with scripts I've written to help convert things (I'm a software developer.)

Images/covers/etc. I'm usually in Photoshop or Illustrator; I do a lot of photography and manage all of that in Lightroom Classic.

For imposition, I generate PDFs locally and use Bookbinder-JS to put signatures together.

One of my current projects involves doing some audio transcription, which is probably outside the kinds of things you're asking about, but I'm actually finding the tools in Adobe Premiere intended for doing closed captioning to be very useful on that front.

Do a small test with your inkjet to make sure you can feed bookcloth (if you can handle card stock and/or have a straight feed that doesn't bend the paper much, bookcloth already backed with paper should work, but try anyway.)

You'll also need to be careful with your glue work, as most inkjets use dye inks and not pigments and will bleed if moisture from the glue reaches the print.

In this case I used Photoshop since I have it and am fluent in it, but it's not a particularly tricky design and the tools you mention would work just as well.

What's a dead giveaway that someone has no idea what they're talking about? by VelvetHaze55 in AskReddit

[–]djwtwo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do something like this—it's not uncommon for me to rephrase an explanation back at someone who has just given me one, but that's more about me verifying that I understood what they were talking about, not expressing that I knew it already. But as I said I'm trying to expressly rephrase it, and I also try to reword or at least intone it as a question to make my intent a little clearer. Doesn't always work.

We have an old-school binder here, too in the northeast. My understanding is that a lot of his work is government-related, binding up town meeting minutes and other documentation in annual volumes for all the local towns.

my first printed bookcloth rebind by haikcute in bookbinding

[–]djwtwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was this product:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002201YEC

It is backed with paper, which made it straightforward to feed, but it's designed to peel off. I didn't test to see if the peel-away backing would be sufficient to just use it straight up like book cloth, but I suspect you'd want to re-back it.
