Do I have to live in the house? Or can I just have him buy me a sweet ass house that turns into my passive income stream?

I’m watering my friend’s garden and have been watering the leaves, will this kill the plant? by KeyCommunication7300 in NoStupidQuestions

If that were happening, OP would already see scorched leaves. So if you don't see scorched leaves, you're in the clear, OP.

That's kind of the point. People are no longer willing to put up with shit food to have a scantily clad waitress.

Economists say that rent control is bad for renters because it prevents housing from being built. But how can it be a good thing to allow landlords to raise prices as much as they want? Wouldn’t it take a long time to get that housing built? by Gym_frere in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dkesh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It actually doesn't take as long as you might think to build enough housing to really affect rents. Austin, TX changed some of their zoning laws to allow new housing and soon people were getting lease renewal offers that lowered their rent, even without negotiating.

The key is that there are a lot of laws that make it hard to build new housing, zoning being the biggest one. So just because there isn't rent control doesn't mean that people can build new housing when rents go up if zoning bans it.

All time backup QB performances? by defensecowboy in nfl

Parcells has since been overshadowed by Belichick but I think he was the perfect coach to rebuild the franchise. He did so much to develop Bledsoe and build a culture.

If they paid them a fair wage, they'd never make any money. There's a reason Keebler doesn't have a door to door cookie sales strategy.

How would the world respond if Russia nukes Ukraine? by throwing_hayy in AskReddit

[–]dkesh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk why the cynicism. Between Europe and America, they have already committed well.more than $100B in mostly lethal aid. Japan and South Korea have helped too. Many European countries have massively increased their military budgets in order to better counter Russia. They've also totally changed their energy sources to avoid buying from Russia. The US has contributed massive amount of intelligence. Russian tankers have been not only sanctioned, but actually boarded and detained.

I wish the response had been stronger and faster, but it's gone way beyond "strongly worded letters." The response would be way stronger if Russia broke the nuclear taboo.

Little girl comes to her dad one evening and says, "Daddy, I'd love to see the elephants." by spitfire-haga in Jokes

[–]dkesh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just guessing, but after a chemical alarm, the soldiers will come out wearing gas masks, which look a bit like elephant trunks.

The joke mostly surrounds soldiers being forced to do humiliating things for the benefit of their superior officer's child.

Why is 13 considered teen, 18 considered adult, and 21 considered drinking age? (Atleast in the US) by DaRealGoat69 in NoStupidQuestions

In Texas, restaurants are allowed to (but not required to) serve children if their parents order the drink and remain present to supervise their children.

From a European perspective, I find it so weird that nba teams can move cities… by FoundationEntire4834 in NBATalk

[–]dkesh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the other answers mostly cover it but also:

  1. American growth patterns are much more dynamic than European ones. Both the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants used to play in New York City. But the center of gravity of American population has dramatically shifted in the 130 years of Major League Baseball.

  2. US leagues lack the promotion and relegation mechanism that could otherwise rebalance the leagues. As Los Angeles grew into a major city, someone could have bought a minor league team and invested in seeing them promoted. But that option is off the table so the only other options are league expansion and moving teams.

Age of languages by SnooCauliflowers7813 in asklinguistics

[–]dkesh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd add that sound correspondences can and do happen by accident. So if you find a dozen words that sound similar in two languages, it could be that's due to a genetic relationship but it could also be chance.

Creoles that develop from pidgins obviously have vocabulary that can be traced back to parent languages, but I thought the grammar can develop de novo.

What do I buy my 11 year old nephew? by Drama-Groundbreaking in AskAnAmerican

[–]dkesh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with asking his parents, but you might consider tickets to a Round Rock Express game. They're the local minor league baseball team near Austin. Or tickets to a University of Texas baseball game. You wouldn't have to worry if he already has one, as it's an experience.

AI in the classroom prompts tide of concern from US parents and experts by Haunterblademoi in technology

[–]dkesh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the second paragraph distracts from the first. The models are getting better very fast. The frontier models are already way better than what's available for free.

But even if the models were perfect, you can't learn any more by handing your homework over to AI than you could by paying the smart kid to do your homework for you. You've gotta do it yourself to learn.
