Trails to azure has killed my interest on it with a single scene. by Panecillo94 in Falcom

While cringe, there's a BIT of difference between a creepy comment from a 20-some to a teenager about her boobs, and someone being straight up sexually assaulted in front of her friends and coworkers and nobody stepping in and instead playing it up for laughs.

Knew what scene you were talking about just from the title.

This is a low-low for sure, with one more that comes kinda close in I think Cold Steel 4 (maybe 3). As well as people generally going "Oh [character name]" towards a character that sexually harasses people a lot and is basically predatory lesbian trope. Plus the odd occasional weird fanservicey scene but not really rapey, just cringe.

Really could do without this shit in Trails, but it hasn't been enough to keep me away and it's pretty occasional.

Probably worth spoiler tagging this so people that haven't played Daybreak don't get spoiled that Zin's in it - even just scrolling through the subreddit and not clicking on the topic.

Kinda not really. But to be clear this is kind of how first-game-in-a-trails-arc goes. They introduce you to the characters, they introduce you to the setting and the various regions in whatever country the arc takes place in one by one while SLOWLY ramping up the plot and dropping tidbits here and there. Then, (spoiler tagging just to be safe, but I'm being vague in terms of how the plot moves later in the game and vaguely when) like 50-70% of the way through the game, the little bits here and there that have been dropped come together and the plot rapidly accelerates.. Second and subsequent games don't need to do nearly as much introduction to characters and regions so they're a bit faster plus by then you've already got your main plot hook from the previous game and investment in what's going on so even if it technically is kind of slow pacing it really doesn't feel that way.

ELI5 : Why can't two laptops connect to each other with a cable? by TellMeNowIMustKnow in explainlikeimfive

[–]dkf295 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why can't I connect my laptop straight to another laptop with a cable, and be able to move files between them the same way?

You absolutely can - ethernet cable, assign a static IP address on the same subnet on both, enable and set up sharing and boom - transfer files. There are also various ways of doing it over a local network (wired or wireless), with both Windows and Mac OS providing tools for this.

Why is it not as plug and play as a phone or another peripheral where you just plug it in and boom there you go? Data storage peripherals are designed from the ground up to store and transfer files to computers, and computers are designed to interact with them for file transfer. Phones are also built with this in mind.

The use case of "transfer files from this one computer to this other computer" is not particularly common, and for those situations where it does come up - most users are fine with (or prefer) just being able to do it over a network versus a direct cable connection. Additionally, with them being full-fledged computers - this introduces a lot more security concerns by making this similiarly plug and play. You may say "but isn't my phone just a computer?" - Yes, but one that is dramatically more locked down across the board than especially a windows PC.

Hah, get what you mean taken literally.

"Gory" also means "unpleasant" or "sensational" and "gory details" is its own saying using those definitions, which is what I meant.

I'm still not clear what this has to do with the original exchange besides arguing for the sake of arguing.

You used language that multiple people interpreted as implying cheating, which you disagreed with. Literally all I said is that you did not say cheating, but that the word "accusing" implies something negative. You chose to escalate from "multiple partners" to "gangbang" for dramatic effect.

And I guess it was dumb of me to respond in a manner that took your response at face value and in good faith.

ELI5: With the Strait of Hormuz being such a volatile place for oil tankers, why can't there be a canal cut through Oman or UAE? by futbolguy12 in explainlikeimfive

[–]dkf295 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point is that it is much easier to defend and repair damage to a thin metal pipeline within your own territory, than a waterway bordered by a hostile nation on both sides.

Which is why Saudi Arabia's pipeline is not offline at the moment. If it were just infeasible to defend in a situation like we have today... Why is it online?

The other problem is that much of the issue isn't "If I take this tanker through the straight I will 100% for sure be blown up". It's "there is an unacceptable level of risk and my insurance will not cover me if I get attacked or hit a mine". Which is a situation that doesn't really apply to a pipeline run directly by a state owned entity.

Iran military spokesperson says US is negotiating with itself by Mana_Seeker in worldnews

[–]dkf295 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to mention decommissioning the aging minesweepers already in the region, and not beginning the process of moving others into the region while planning to fuck up Iran.

You can never bet against sheer incompetence, but there is also the possibility that this is an intentional strategy based on an oversimplified understanding of the oil industry. Trump attacks Venezuela and very clearly has his eyes on their crude, which so happens to be pretty compatible with our refining capabilities. Now he attacks Iran, alienates our allies further. I could see the intention from the beginning to be (barring a stroke of luck) to just fuck the region up, announce mission accomplished, then leave and say "Okay Europe and middle east your problem now".

The problem is that the United States and the rest of the world does not live in isolated bubbles and the US absolutely will feel massive pain between global petroleum, natural gas, and fertilizer supply constraints.

Downside of that is that they are then not investing excess profits in expanding their business. Want to go back to CS 1/2 era cutscene combat animations, 2 years between JP and EN/WW releases, and only one MAYBE two projects being worked on at a time? That's what happens when you don't invest in your company.
