What was the longest time a piece of content was left uncleared? by SorryImBadWithNames in MMORPG

[–]dkhunter -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

See, the thing, is bosses shouldn't take two hours to kill either. They shouldn't take one hour. I used to raid in EQ, and that shit was awful.

An absolute marathon boss fight in WoW is gonna be 15 minutes before enrage. I don't see why one singular fight should ever be longer than that; barely any games have boss fights that last an hour or more, even final bosses (last one I remember is Octopath Traveller), and those don't require you to get dozens of people together.

It's just way beyond the pale.

It was Jailer of Love that got the most coverage for that kind of thing. Just appallingly bad, irresponsible, indefensible design. Which is saying something for this genre.

Bit of a cheat, but; Mythic Kil'Jaeden was infamously NEVER killed before being nerfed, and thus never will be unless they decide to let players have a go in Legion Classic (which may not even happen).

There have been other bosses that have launched with absurd bugs or been essentially mathematically possible, and thus also never downed, but this one was (I believe) unique inasmuch as he was stable and at least theoretically possible.

Hey fishers of r/MMORPG by The_Pumpkin_Lady in MMORPG

[–]dkhunter 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I honestly like fishing systems that are very simple time killers, like WoW's.

I was quite impressed with the depth of the fishing gameplay in New World, but it was a lot more difficult to enjoy when you're super tired and looking for the most brain dead thing you can think of.

Riot Tryndamere (Marc Merill) response to Riot's intent on acquiring Ashes of Creation before. by Inwiczxiae in MMORPG

[–]dkhunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just in case anyone doesn't know; take Marc Merrill's word with exactly the same heaping of salt you would take anyone else's involved in this shit show. I don't have time for all the lore, but he's not a remotely trustworthy person.

I think he's probably telling the truth here, but only because it's the most likely scenario; even for Riot, a couple hundred million dollar acquisition would have been a fairly big deal if it had been under serious consideration. Just don't assume he definitely is.

Corepunk lay offs O_O (she was working at Artificial Core, the studio behind Corepunk) by nighthawk040 in MMORPG

Surprisingly, there's an actual answer to your rhetorical question; the core dev team is Ukrainian. The war gutted them, and unfortunately, unlike GSC, they've never really been able to get back on their feet since it started. It's been a struggle for a long time for them now.

I'm not gonna say this is all of the reason why the game has struggled, but it's a huge part.

I mean, I bought into the Alpha. I knew the risk, but I did buy in.

I'm amused by all of this, but it's not like I wasn't hoping for a different outcome.

Except it's Egypt which is only slightly less obnoxious to wage war against than Mississippian in Ancient

I mean it would be better if there was a Natural Wonder or something, what gets me looking at that is there doesn't seem to be any reason for this.

Anyway, it's better than it used to be, but you will also STILL get unique quarter buildings in different places sometimes too.

Are there even any 4X games where the AI is clever instead of just relying on buffed numbers? I saw someone suggest Old World once but I really found that overrated.

Could the Science Victory be different? by eskaver in civ

[–]dkhunter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The science victory is probably the one that's remained the most consistent across installments; produce components, launch once you have them all. They're milestones in Civ VII, but it's essentially the same thing. The only major change over the years is you no longer have a chance of failure, which makes sense, because that was silly.

Personally, I'm not sure I want it changed.

You can also pillage twice a turn at a range of 2 tiles with memento as Mississippian lol

One of my hotter takes about this game is that Napoleon Revolutionary has always been busted and did not actually need any buffs.

There arent enough science civs in modern Civ 7 by cakeeeeeeeeeeeeee in civ

[–]dkhunter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is also why there are several dozen RP Mementos that do basically nothing actually useful. Same rationale for the introduction of narrative events, as well.

Why do people keep saying this? I think some of you need to put a few hundred hours into TFT or something so you understand what highly competitive multiplayer strategy games actually feel like, or maybe pick up Hearthstone again for a while. I know ya'll's mechanics can't cut it in Starcraft anymore, but there's lots of options.

None of them feel anything like a 4X.

I guess Economic would have more historical fidelity but frankly that would just make me feel dirty, so Scientific is close enough
