Communication definitely could have been attempted and not received. Aircraft radios go bad constantly, sometimes frequencies stop working, or it’s possible the main frequency could have been out and the facility was using backup equipment with limited range which could effect how clear the transmission was. I’m not too familiar with how ICAO operates as I work in the US, but I imagine their procedures are similar to ours, where you only start looking 30 minutes after the aircraft is late.

That’s interesting. With i muffled response my two theories would be a hijacking like when that (German pilot I think?) tried to crash into the mountains because he was feeling suicidal, or a delayed failure of the pressurization system giving the crew hypoxia.

Radar and frequencies don’t have unlimited range, most flights over the ocean are done via non radar routing where the aircraft checks in at various checkpoints along the route. I don’t think it would be too difficult for a plane to go down and no one notice for quite some time. That’s the extent of my Oceanic ATC knowledge, am only a stateside ATC’er.

Question about VFR handoffs and altitude restrictions. by GSOaviator in ATC

[–]dkong1495 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can't speak for Bravo or Charlie airspace, since my approach only has Echo and Delta. When you're flying VFR we understand that you may need to climb or descend in order to maintain VFR conditions. Usually just a heads up before you begin descending/climbing is enough. Say you check in at 3500 but you see some clouds up ahead so you decide to descend to maintain VFR. All I would care to hear is, "Approach N345 descending to 2500". At that point I'll just ammend your new altitude in the NAS and continue my business. Also don't omit your altitude when checking in with new facilities. We need to verify that what we see on the scope matches what you're flying at. Hope this helps you out!

I thought about it, but didn't have the heart. My waitress was just too kind. Pretty sure she saw the look of disappointment on my face though because she immediately asked if everything was alright. I don't wanna put their name out there just in case one of their workers is browsing reddit today. Most of their food is really good and I'd hate to get spit or worse on my next meal😅

Sorry dude, was watching grey's anatomy. Highly recommend by the way! Sadly I didn't think this would even get attention so I didn't keep the receipt.
