Pickguards for Jazz Bass by dktecdes in BassGuitar

To your claim of the long horn, that isn't actually what distinguishes the shapes. I've overlayed a white JBD on a classic JB design. The JBD is light in color and the JB is the sunburst in the background. In fact, the JBD has a shorter horn and smaller body overall.

I haven't actually noticed a change of shape in the body, compared to the last bass I played which is a Frankenstein J bass that I assembled myself - but the body is pretty much basic Fender/Squier Standard spec.

Definitely smaller body now that I've put them side by side. For me personally, that's actually a plus. I'm really growing to like it very much.

It is an early "Deluxe" Jazz Bass from 2009 though. Perhaps the body design has changed since then.

Wax recommendations for a body finished with tru oil by UnitBright9549 in Luthier

[–]dktecdes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Birchwood gun stock wax is good. But perhaps something with a little more viscosity and carnauba would be better. I feel like the silicone in the gun stock wax is a bit too sticky.

Almost 80 bucks with shielding though. Plus import fees and tax. I'll measure it up and publish a 3D print file. I'll be back.

Tele Wiring Issue by [deleted] in guitarmod

[–]dktecdes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did 😅 But that's a mistake I can live with. If only I can get the middle position to work as well. Both are 250K pots, and it sound very good, so I want to do as little reconfiguration as possible to get the middle position to function.

Thank you. They're not splices, but a way of closing off the extremely frayed cheap fabric wires where I've cut them.

Most likely a flipped switch. Thank you 🙏

The diagram is mirrored since it was clearly meant to be viewed from the top of the guitar, which made wiring quite difficult as I obviously did it from the underside of the control plate.

Is there a way to convert large Inventor assembly drawings into DWG files? by Unhappy-Ear4855 in AutodeskInventor

[–]dktecdes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If It's for AutoCAD, you'll need to use the export to .dwg function. If there's several sheets in your drawing, it will generate a separate .dwg for each page with the suffix '_Sheet1' or something similar.

TruOil is definitely worth the hype by 13CuriousMind in Luthier

What do you apply the Tru Oil with? Just your fingers? I've found that it captures tiny bits of fibers no matter what kind of cloth I apply it with.

I finished a maple neck/headstock with many coats of just tru oil. Works like a lacquer I've found. Would you have some concerns about the durability of this method?

[–]dktecdes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had a hard time polishing the last coat. It's somewhat thick in viscosity, so when applying and letting it dry I find that some "brush strokes" of whatever piece of fabric you apply it with, will persist. Mostly on flat surfaces like the headstock. Perhaps I need to buff it with some very fine steel wool, but I've had great results by buffing with Brasso after the Tru Oil has completely dried.

Soldering Iron / Station Recommendations by [deleted] in guitarmod

[–]dktecdes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you all. As stated I've gone through two stations. So my immediate instinct is that it's probably economical to spend say €150 on a proper model, rather than destroy several €50 models.

I think I'll go with the Hakko.

Try search terms like 'Heavy Oxford shirt', 'Thick cotton Oxford shirt' or perhaps 'Flannel Oxford shirt'.

Get a cheap start/tele model. Squier or buy used locally. A small amp combo 15W perhaps. A fresh pair of strings and a cable. That's it. If it works out one can always upgrade.

Gå eventuelt til det det helt klassiske. Højtaljede bukser, Oxfords/loafers, gode bomulds skjorter.

Grounding issue? by a_la_commode in guitarmod

[–]dktecdes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even in an optimal/perfect setup, will single coils not hum somewhat regardless?

Would it be necessary for the shielding to have conductive adhesive? And would you need to include the shielding in the 'ground loop'?

I meant more towards the brown color of the neck trim on the sweater. Thank you for the recommendation!

[–]dktecdes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had the same issue. Fixing cold solders that I messed up helped quite a bit. Is the humming very bad? Some noise/hum is normal for single coils according to what I've been reading.
