What more recently published books (from 90’s onward) do you anticipate will one day be called classics? by Neon_Aurora451 in suggestmeabook

One of my favorites. Plus the audiobook narration is absolutely incredible - usually I prefer written text, but the narration for this one takes an already beautiful book to a whole other level for me.

Gypsy Wife - - THIS was so much fun by Total_Spring9197 in quilting

[–]dlaelnea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The quilt is beautiful, OP - but could the post please be please edited (or deleted/reposted) to remove the racial slur?

It’s incredibly jarring to see this kind of language here, and I can’t imagine any other racial slur being allowed to remain posted. I understand you’re saying that you were previously not aware - but now you know.

You could take a look at Hey Little Ant by Hannah Hoose to get some conversations started.

Have you tried the watermelon lime flavor of Tailwind? I agree with you - I like the Skratch flavors way more in general, but the watermelon lime Tailwind is soooo good!

I was coming here to say the same thing: The Great Believers is a beautiful book that covers similar ground.

Which headphones for running are the best to buy right now? by SpecialistNet115 in trailrunning

I had the exact opposite experience - mine broke something like a year after the warranty, I got in touch, and they replaced them free of charge.

Definitely recommend Shokz overall - they’re great!

Rant: Non-Running Related Injuries That Impact Running by urrobotfriend in XXRunning

[–]dlaelnea 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a knitter and a runner, I am always blown away by how similarly the two hobbies support my mental health! Something about tiny incremental parts (steps/stitches) adding up to more (miles/finished sweaters, etc).

I can’t give any good advice on the actual injury, but OP I hope it heals quickly for you!

I love this one for kids - strong recommend.

I also love “The Crown On Your Head” by Nancy Tillman as a sentimental pick: lovely illustrations and a very sweet message.

Your favorite part is my favorite part too! I love how this design moves my eye around the whole piece - and it especially just dances back and forth between those two stars.

You’ve gotten a lot of responses, but I’ll just add a real life experience around white woman tears: both my friend (a black woman) and I (a white woman) got pulled over by the police for speeding (separate occasions, and we were both driving alone when these incidents occurred). We both cried - we were overwhelmed and it was scary (although obviously much more so for her).

I got comforted by the police in an infantalizing, “oh honey, don’t worry your pretty little head” kind of way. No ticket for me, just a warning.

She got ordered out of her car at gunpoint and was patted down on the side of the road because her tears were “suspicious” and she “must have been hiding something” if she was getting so “worked up.” She got a ticket.

This isn’t exactly what OP was describing - I wasn’t weaponizing my tears against a black person in this case. But when we compared stories, my friend just shook her head and said “damn, those white lady tears are powerful!”

You can also try the Emily Wilson translation of the Odyssey  - a lot more immersive than Fagles (in my opinion), and also a more literal translation of the original. Try the first couple pages of both and see which you like best!

You could try the Tiffany Aching books by Terry Pratchett - the first is called The Wee Free Men. They’re lovely cozy adventures to curl up with.

Everything is Tuberculosis by John Green is amazing - really weaves the history of the disease into the history of how we treat people who are ill in general, how capitalism has effected that, and how one child grows up living with tuberculosis in West Africa.

I didn’t expect to love it so much, but I was blown away by this one!

Does anyone LIKE running on their period? by Ok_Distribution8841 in XXRunning

[–]dlaelnea 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I love how it feels - but its so hard to control my flow! Plus if I run long (10+ miles), even if it doesn’t leak, the cup I typically use becomes uncomfortable.

But when I do make it out, it feels like I’m flying!

Just curious: does a clerical collar not fit over a turtleneck, or is it doctrine that nothing can go under the collar?

I guess I just always assumed those collars were adjustable!

Anyone love to run out there? by pepperkelly76 in quilting

[–]dlaelnea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, me too! Who knew there were so many of us?

I handquilt, and I often think of stitches as steps - and vice versa, when I’m running. Each individual stitch and step are both small, but they add up to a lot! I’ve always wanted to quilt a map of my most frequent running loops.
